A 14-year-old girl was attacked by a grey bear while competing in a bike race. She managed to whisper the “bear” to her rescuer. The girl had serious head, neck and leg wounds. Now she is in a dangerous condition in hospital.
The girl was taking part in a 24-hour race through Bicentennial Park in Alaska when she was attacked by the bear. Bicentennial Park is next to Chugach State Park where some wild animals live.
The animal attacked the girl in a heavily wooded area at about 1:30 am. The girl called emergency services but she was unable to say any word. Another rider Peter Basinger found her lying unconscious on the ground. He told Anchorage Daily News that she managed to say the word “bear” when he stopped to help. Her helmet (頭盔)had been knocked off in the attack and rolled into the woods. Mr Basinger waited with the girl for about 20 minutes until doctors arrived. Armed police travelled 3 km with doctors to pick up the girl.
Animal expert Rick Sinnot said something must be done as soon as possible to prevent the bear from attacking people again. “It was extremely terrifying,” he said.
Mr Sinnot told Anchorage Daily News that the bear might be a mother. It hurt two runners on a nearby path two weeks ago. He also said that the girl was lucky to have been wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head several times.

As you have probably noticed, some students are more successful than others when taking such an examination. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better strategic skills that make taking test easier, and therefore provide better results.
Here are some very important and often ignored guidelines to taking a test successfully.
Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. If you spend a lot of time on one question that you don’t understand there can be two negative outcomes:
Losing time. Remember one question may only be worth one point, if you are not able to answer questions later because you have lost time you could lose more points!
Becoming nervous. Becoming nervous can make you lose your concentration and leads to worse results.
If possible, go through the entire test answering the questions you are sure you know. This results in your being more relaxed and feeling more confident.
Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Now you will feel more confident and this will improve your test taking. However, remember not to waste too much time on any one question.
Once you have gone through the test twice, see if any of the questions asked can help you answer those really difficult questions. This is a little used trick. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things. This should not be tried until you have finished the test and have some time remaining to try the questions you have had problems with again.
If you have a strong feeling about a question when you first answer it, don’t go back and change later. Usually(but not always) a strong first impulse(沖動(dòng))means we know the answer and we don’t really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes an error. This is very common so be very careful!

James Dean came to Hollywood when he was eighteen, hoping to get into the movies. At first, he was not successful at all. Then he went to New York. He got a part in a play and was seen by the great director Elia Kazan. Kazan was planning the movie East of Eden and realized Dean would be perfect for one of the main roles.
By this time, Dean had already had a reputation and was difficult to work with. He then went back to Hollywood to make East of Eden and then made two more movies, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. He almost always wore the same overcoat and jeans and he had hardly any friends at all. “If he didn’t like you, he wouldn’t even give you the pleasure of his anger. You could be in the same telephone booth with him, but you wouldn’t exist,” someone who knew him said later.
In spite of his poor eyesight, he loved driving fast motorcycles and even faster sports cars. A few days after he finished Giant, on September 25, 1955, Dean went for a drive in his new Porsche. It was evening and the light was poor. Dean was not wearing his glasses. Suddenly, he saw a car in front of him. It was slowing down and trying to turn off the highway. Dean tried to slow down too, but it was too late. He hit the car at high speed and was killed immediately.
A few years later, a New York salesclerk wrote a book called Jimmy Dean Returns in which she claimed that she was in contact with Dean from the other side of the grave. Half a million copies of the book were sold. It was only the beginning of a strange legend(傳奇) that goes on, even today.

Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “we’re kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don’t just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface—dress, food and hours of work-while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(準(zhǔn)時(shí)). If you invite people to a party at 7 o’clock, your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “l(fā)ate” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.
小題1:Why was the author unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1?(within 12 words)
小題2:If one wants to work in foreign countries, what should he do first? (within 12 words)
小題3:What attracts people’s attention to the cultural differences? (within 5 words)
小題4:Who are usually punctual when invited to a party the people? (within 2 words)
小題5:According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences? (within 7 words)

Women make better drivers than men for many reasons. Why is that? Wouldn't you think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless? If you ask me, I'd like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not have the courage to admit the truth.
Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea where they are going. Women don't drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find themselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever been in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going forty-five miles per hour only to find out he's made another wrong turn.
Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because women trick to get out of tickets but only because they don't speed. Women don't risk putting their own lives and the lives of others in danger. In other words ,they have more responsibility for life.
My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible. They're totally lost in loud music beyond a necessary level. You don't ever see women driving like that.
I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are queens of the road. Oh ,men, if you want to continue criticizing women for being bad drivers, bring it on. We know you lack confidence, or else you wouldn't be wasting your valuable time making jokes about the ones you may choose to spend the rest of your days with.
小題1:Who does the author think are the better drivers? (no more than 1 word)

The World  Health Organization(WHO)  says there has been a sharp increase in the number of children in developing countries who weigh too much.  In African countries, the WHO says the number of overweight or obese children is two times as  high  as it was 20 years ago.
Around the world, about 43 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011. Doctors use height, weight and age to measure whether a person is underweight, normal, or obese.
Overweight children are more likely to become overweight or obese adults.  The condition can lead to serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Francesco Branca , director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, says people are eating manufactured or processed food more often, which often has a high sugar. fat and salt content.  Another reason of gaining weight is the city lifestyle.  They travel in cars or other vehicles more than on foot, and have less physical activities in general.
Mr Branca says reducing the number of overweight children will not be easy.  He says the goal is difficult to meet even in wealthy countries.
The WHO has some basic solutions for individuals(個(gè)人) : to lower your in-take of fat ,sugar, salt and processed food, eat more fruit and vegetables, and increase physical activity .These actions are especially important for children and governments should concern providing vitamin for children .
Reducing the number of overweight children will not be easy.  The goal is difficult to meet even in wealthy countries. Educational campaigns about problems linked to obesity would also help. Food manufactures must balance quality and taste with the dangers of sugar, fat and salt.
The current goal of the WHO's World Health Assembly is to prevent an increase in the percentage of overweight children during the next twelve years.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Bullying (欺負(fù)) can take a variety of forms, from the verbal being taunted or called hurtful names to the physical being kicked or shoved, as well as indirect forms, such as being excluded (排除)from social groups. A survey I conducted with Irene Whitney found that in British primary schools up to a quarter of pupils reported experience of bullying, in which about one in ten cases was persistent(執(zhí)意的). There was less bullying in secondary schools, with about one in twenty-five suffering persistent bullying, but these cases may be particularly recalcitrant.
Bullying is clearly unpleasant, and can make the child experiencing it feel unworthy and depressed. In extreme cases it can even lead to suicide, though this is thankfully rare. Victimized pupils are more likely to experience difficulties with interpersonal relationships as adults, while children who persistently bully are more likely to grow up to be physically violent, and convicted of anti-social offences.
Until recently, little help was available to teachers to deal with bullying. Perhaps as a consequence, schools would often deny the problem. “There is no bullying at this school” has been a common refrain, almost certainly untrue. Fortunately more schools are now saying: “There is not much bullying here, but when it occurs we have a clear policy for dealing with it.”
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN ELEVEN WORDS)
小題1:According to the first paragraph, the fact that _________________ belongs to an indirect form of bullying.
小題2:The survey the author conducted indicates that as students grow older, ______________.
小題3:Bullying is likely to cause ________________ feelings among victimized children.
