Twenty years ago,I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to 1 a passenger at 2: 30 a.m. When I arrived to collect,I found the building was 2except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and 3   , "Just a minute," answered a weak, 4 voice.

After a long 5 ,a small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the 6 ,and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked 7 toward the car.

She kept thanking me for my 8 . " It's nothing”,I told her. " I just try to treat my pas?sengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

"Oh,you're such a good man," she said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an  9, and then asked, " Could you drive through downtown?"

  "It's not the shortest 10   ," I answered quickly.

"Oh,I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice(收容所) .I don't have any family left.   The 11 says I don't have very long.”I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(計(jì)價(jià)器) .

For the next two hours, we 12 through the city. She showed me the building which she had 13 worked in,the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone 14 as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a(n) 15 building and would sit star?ing into the darkness, saying16

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I,m 17 Let's go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

"How much do I 18 you?" she asked.

  "Nothing. " I said.

"You have to make a 19 ," she answered. "Oh,there are other passengers," I an?swered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held on to me tightly. Our hug

ended with her 20 , " You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

When I arrived to collect可知,作者是去接客人。

第一段中...except for a single light in a ground floor window也有暗示。

4.A根據(jù)第三段信息…a small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side Was a small suitcase可知答案為A。

后文也有暗示...then returned to help the woman和…toward the car.

We drove in silence to the address she had given me也可以印證答案。

11.B根據(jù)I don't have any family left可以排除C。 I don't have very long可以判斷這樣的結(jié)論只有醫(yī)生可以得出。

Could you drive through downtown?

At dawn, she suddenly said...

17.C根據(jù)老人的年齡、身體狀況和出來的時(shí)間at 2:30 a.m.

A選項(xiàng)缺乏介詞for,pay for"支付";owe"欠一定數(shù)量的債"。

Twenty years ago,I drove a taxi for a living可知。

Modern inventions have speeded up people's lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts(吹喊) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks.

All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, ac?cording to some scientists;too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains,a con?sequence we do not like to think about.

However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world.

There was a time when some people's lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there;their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so,we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced:they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern ma?chinery has freed people from that primitive existence.
