17.This Mother's Day will be the 8th year I have spent without my own mother.She passed away less than a month before Mother's Day in the year 2000.She had been ill for almost two years,and I didn't cry when she died,or at her funeral,but on that first Mother's Day without her.On that day,I realized that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
She still lives in family memories,in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers,in the values she had instilled(灌輸) in her children,and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli and irises.Each fall she would dig the bulbs out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper.The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted.It seemed like a lot of effort to me,but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before.She put the same hard work into caring for her family,instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play,compassion,and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share anecdotes about your mother's life at your Mother's Day party.Too often,we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away,fearful that we will unearth sad feelings.It doesn't have to be that way.Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds(捆綁)the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old.Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of the grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of.Sharing anecdotes to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity,and may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.

Eric lived and explored in Greenland for the full three years of his banishment(流放) from Iceland.Realizing the habitable(適于居住的) Greenland,he returned to Iceland.He persuaded 25ships to be with him on a mission to colonize(殖民) this new land.Some turned back and others were lost at sea,but Eric arrived in Greenland with about 14ships,and around 500settlers.The colony prospered( 繁榮),and Eric became a rich leader.Therefore,Eric was regarded as the discoverer of America.
Eric's son Lief was a strong leader,and an explorer himself.He sailed west and found rich lands there which he named Vinland,but soon after he returned to Greenland,the island was going through a plague (瘟疫) brought from Iceland,and many of its settlers,including Eric the Red,died.Once Greenland might have reached around 3000~4000inhabitants(居住者),but the dreams of settling further west came to little as the Greenlanders struggled to survive in their awful environment which worsened with a cooling cycle.Several hundred years after Eric and Lief the Greenlanders were cut off from Europe,the colder climate brought the Innuit peoples south,and into fight with the Vikings that survived in the terrible conditions.Around a hundred years before Columbus"discovered America",the colony in Greenland failed to support itself.No one knows if there were any survivors where they left.

21.What can be inferred about Eric the Red from paragraph1?B
A.Eric the Red often lent his wood working tools to other people.
B.Eric the Red got his name because of his appearance and temper.
C.Eric the Red often had quarrels with his father and other people.
D.Eric the Red was born in a rich family and lived a happy childhood.

8.When you learn reading,nlath,and other subjects taught in school from your parents or teaehers who come to your house,it's called homeschooling.A kid may be the only one,or he may be taught with brothers,sisters,or kids from the neighborhood.
Parents choose to homeschool their children for many different reasons.Sometimes a kid is sick and can't go to regular school.But more often,kids are homeschooled beeause their parents feel they can give their children a better education than the local school can.Patents also may choose homeschooling because they want their children's education to include religious (宗教的) instruction,which isn't offered at puhlie schools.
If you don't like school,homeschooling might seem like the perfect solution.But it's better for everyone if homeschooling isn't chosen just as an escape from school or prohlems there.Finding solutions to the problem should be the first step.
Kids who are homeschooled may benefit from the one-on-one attention.For example,if you don't understand something in math,the whole class won't he moving on without you.You might be the whole class!It's also possible that you might learn more than you would in a regular classroom,because if you really good at something,you can keep learning more at your own pace.
Kids who are homeschooled also may get out in their communities more than other kids.They may get to experience hands-on education at museums,libraries,businesses and other community resources.They also might volunteer or take part in"service learning"where they take on local projects.
No matter where a child goes to school,the key to learning is listening to the teacher and asking for help when you need it.A homeschooled child might feel more comfortable with his teacher (a parent),but the child still needs to pay attention and cooperate.Just like in a traditional school,teachers and students need to work together to achieve goals in the classroom.

64.The passage mainly tells usB.
A.every kid should be taught at home
B.what homeschooling is and how it works
C.the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling
D.homeschooled kids should go out to do volunteer work
65.What does the author think of homeschooling?C
A.It shouldn't be encouraged at all.
B.It is not a good way to get educated.
C.It can offer kids what suits their needs.
D.It is only good for the kids who can't go to school.
66.The similarity of homeschooling and learning at school is thatA.
A.students all should cooperate with their teachers
B.students don't feel lonely
C.students all have many classmates
D.studenls all have more opportunities to get out
67.Which of the following should NOT belong to the reasons why kids get homeschooled?D
A.They can get more benefits from homeschooling.
B.They can't go to school because of their bad health.
C.They can learn something that is not taught in school.
D.They escape from school because they hate going to school.

2.Don't invite crime-take basic,sensible precautions.Your house and possession are valuable and must be properly protected.When you buy a lock,you buy time.The best prevention is delay and noise which could mean discovery.
When you leave it-lock it!
First of all, fit security locks to all doors and windows and a safety chain on the front door.Secondly, use them!
If you have any ladders or tools, don't leave them lying about in the garden, lock them away.
"Safe"or"secret"places for keys and valuables are not reliable-nine times out of ten,they are the first place a thief will look.
When you move house…
When you move into a new home even if it is fitted with security locks,change them.You don't know who else may have keys.

Valuables need special protection
Valuables should really be given special protection-preferably by leaving them with your bank.A small security safe works too,but not to the most determined burglar.It is also important to keep an up-to-date list of valuables and their descriptions.In the case of fine art,paintings,or jewelry,color photographs can sometimes be of assistance to the police if you are unfortunate enough to have them stolen.Enter the details on the back of the pictures.But don't keep such documents in your house,keep them at the bank or with your insurance company.
Going on holiday?
Don't talk about your holidays and future plans loudly in public.Do remember to cancel the milk and newspapers and also to draw curtains back.
Operate a"Good Neighbor"program to ensure that mail is taken in,the house is checked regularly and that lights are put on.
Call at your local police station and tell them you are going away.Make sure that they know how to contact you in case of trouble.
Don't leave cash or valuables in the house-take them with you or put them in the bank.

9.My favorite English teacher could draw humor out of the driest material.It wasn't forced on us either.He took Samuel Johnson's dictionary,Addison's essays,and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them  hilarious,even at eight o'clock in the morning.The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own some of them seemed dead,but the second time,after his explanation,I couldn't believe that I hadn't seen the humor.The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions (典故) and irony (反諷) and hilarious moments.I learned more from him than from any other teacher.
My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh.Some students found him to be funny.Many others did not.He assigned journals over a six week period,to be written every day.At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas,short stories,reactions to what we had read,and so on.Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other's journals.Mine was passed to Joe,that class clown,who always behaved in a funny or silly way.He saw it fit to make joke of and said,"This writing isn't fit to line (襯墊) the bottom of a birdcage."Our teacher laughed at that funny remark.It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.
So what makes the difference?Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have.It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing,or it can tear them apart.It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating.

6.Whale Wars
As I was looking through the channels I came upon something called Whale Wars. What a bunch of stupid people.I really don't believe these people are thinking straight.I know they are not thinking straight because one of the questions the captain asks of all new members or those who want to be members is this:Are you willing to die for a whale? One more time, just in ease you were not paying attention. Are you willing to die for a whale? No,I am not willing to die for a whale-are yon crazy?I don't mind jumping in there to help out on a cause, but to die for a whale or even any kind of animal is beyond my understanding. These people believe strongly enough in this cause to say"Yes,yes,I will die for a whale".The countries involved in the whaling industry do this because it is a way to make a living and support their families. The last thing they need is to have a bunch of stupid people trying to disable their ship.
A lot of the organizations out there say that whaling has to be stopped immediately without question. However, disabling these fishing boats will only stop the so-called problem temporarily.
The point is this:It is so very easy for people to say stop the whaling!OK,you stop the whaling. What is your answer for an alternative to whaling?I'm waiting. How do you want these people to support their families and help fuel the economy in which they live?A lot of people want the whaling to stop, but they have little or nothing to offer as an alternative for them. You cannot just say stop something and then that is the end of the problem.
Yes,I am picking on the"save the planet"people again.I will continue to do so until they can come up with better ideas on how to save the planet without putting people and what they own in harm's way.Destroying another person's things and putting them in a possible life or death situation is not the answer.
Until whaling countries can figure something else out to cure this so-called problem, there really isn't a lot that can be done.Until this happens,I say raise the anchor, set the main sail and WHALE AWAY!

7.We don't know how different our future will be in the future. We can only try to imagine it.
At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050,we will use computers almost every day.We will be making new friends through the Internet---even our husbands or wives will be met in this way.It will be much faster and easier for us.On the other hand, our relationships with people won't be as important as they are today---we will feel a little lonely.
Computer will also help us in many other activities in 2050.For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
Spending holidays will also be completely different.Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone.Means of transport will,of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will cause less pollution.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to more attention to protecting the environment. And,scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS.Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can't predict the exact changes which will be made in the world,we often think about them.We worry about our and our children's future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
