The United States is facing a growing concern: rising obesity(肥胖) rates. A new report says adult obesity rates rose last year in 23 of the 50 states. And, the percentage of obese children was at or above 30% in 30 states. Mississippi had the highest rate of adult obesity in the new study. 32.5% of the state’s adults were obese. Mississippi also had the highest rate of obese and overweight children. 44.4% of all children between the ages of ten and seventeen years were obese or overweight.

The study used a system of measurement called the Body Mass Index(B-M-I) to define words like obese and overweight. To find your B-M-I, divide your weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. A normal B-M-I is between 18.5 and 24.9. The B-M-I of someone overweight is between 25 and 29.5. And, an obese person has a B-M-I above 30.

The new report says widespread obesity is increasing the rates of long-lasting diseases, such as heart disease. Obesity is also responsible for an increasing part of health care costs in the United States. Health care costs have grown while many Americans are getting fatter. A lack of physical exercise, watching TV too much and eating junk food contribute to the rising obesity rate. The report says the current economic recession(經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退) could worsen obesity rates by increasing food prices. This would make healthy foods cost more. The report blames the recession for rising rates of depression, anxiety and stress, which are closely linked to obesity in many cases.

The report offers some ideas for dealing with obesity within government health care reforms. They include making sure that every adult and child has a right to preventive medical services. Also, people should do more physical exercise, drive less and eat less junk food to fight obesity.

The easy way out isn't always easiest . I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug , my husband of one month , to a special meal . I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu(菜譜) which included homemade bread . Knowing the bread would take time , I started on it as soon as Doug left for work . As I was not experienced in cooking , I thought if a dozen was good , two dozens would be better , so I doubled(加倍)everything . As Doug loved oranges , I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl . Soon there was a sticky dough (面團(tuán)) covered with ugly yellowish marks . Realizing I had been defeated , I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work , I went on preparing the rest of the meal , and , when Doug got home , we sat down to eat Cornish chicken with rice . He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed . Twice he got up and went outside , saying he thought he heard a noise . The third time he left , I went to the windows to see what he was doing . Looking out , I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin , holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container . When I came out of the house , he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin . Picking up the stick again , he held the lid up enough for me to see . I felt cold . But I stepped closer and looked harder . Without doubt it was my work . The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing .It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the 'living thing” was and why it was there . I don't know who was more embarrassed(尷尬)by the whole thing - Doug or me.

Why I Don’t Spare “Spare Change”

“Poor but honest.” “The deserving(值得幫助的)poor. ” These words always come to my mind when I think of “the poor. ” But I also think of people who, perhaps through alcohol(酒)or drugs, have ruined not only their own lives but also the lives of others in order to give way to their own pleasure. Perhaps alcoholism and drug addiction(上癮)really are “diseases. ” as many people say, but my own feeling-based, of course, not on any serious study-is that most alcoholies and drug addicts belong to the “undeserving poor. ” And that is largely why I don’t give spare change to beggars.

But surely among the street people there are also some who can rightly be called “deserving.” Deserving what? My spare change? Or simply the government’s assistance? It happens that I have been brought up to believe that it is proper to make contributions to charity(慈善機(jī)構(gòu)), but if I give some change to a beggar, am I making a contribution to charity and thereby helping someone, or, am I perhaps simply encouraging someone not to get help? Or, maybe even worse, am I supporting a cheat?

If one believes in the value of private charity, one can either give to needy people or to charitable organizations. In giving to a beggar one may indeed be helping a person who badly needs help, but one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy person. In giving to an organization, on the other hand, one can feel that one’s money is likely to be used wisely. True, facing a beggar one may feel that this particular unfortunate person needs help at this moment-a cup of coffee or a sandwich-and the need will not be met unless I put my hand in my pocket right now. But I have come to think that the beggars whom I meet can get along without my spare change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better off for not having money to buy alcohol or drugs.

I know nothing about these beggars, but it’s my impression that they simply prefer begging to working. I am not generalizing about street people. I am talking about the people whom I actually meet. That’s why I do not give “spare change, ” and I don’t think I will in the future.

A.He doesn’t think they need help.

B.He doesn’t have enough money to give.

C.He is not convinced they will use it rightly.

D.He believes they can get help from the government.

66.In the second paragraph, the author presents his idea by _______.

A.a(chǎn)sking questions for people to think about

B.giving examples to support his argument

C.raising questions and answering them

D.expressing his opinions directly

67.Which of the following opinions does the author accept?

A.Drug addiction is a disease.

B.Some street people are poor and needy.

To me, the ocean is our greatest wilderness. I love swimming in it , surfing its waves, watching it from shore and thinking about all the life living unseen under the surface.
When I take my little kids to check out tide pools, we’re overjoyed when we find a sea star or some shellfish. Lately, though, I've noticed a change in my favorite pools: there are more sea grasses and fewer animals with shells.
I can't help feeling these small changes portend something more troubling about our oceans. It matches what scientists are telling us: our oceans are being troubled by carbon dioxide that threatens corals, colorful fish, salmon, sea otters, even whales. Our oceans are facing a major change.
Every hour, a million tons of carbon dioxide from cars, factories and power plants rain down on the world’s oceans. Carbon pollution brings about a chemical reaction that turns sea water more acidic (酸的) and takes away things important for sea animals .
Some of us are already feeling the effects of this growing crisis(危機(jī)). Shellfish farmers in the Pacific Northwest have reported a decrease in natural and farmed oysters(牡蠣). Just this week, a new studyproved the link between the huge reduction in the numbers of oysters and ocean acidification. As polar waters become more acidic, Alaskan fishermen are troubled by the future of smaller fish.
Without action, ocean acidification will have a disastrous influence on the food chain, affecting not only sea life but the people who depend on it for food and their living. Already, our oceans have become 30 percent more acidic since preindustrial times, and it gets worse every day. We can stop this frightening dream, but only if we act now.
That's why the Center for Biological Diversity has started a petition (請?jiān)笗? requesting President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency to develop a plan to deal with ocean acidification. Decisive action can save sea life as we know it.
Now it isn’t too late to save our oceans and sea life. With immediate action to reduce carbon dioxide release we can start taking important steps today to deal with this disastrous situation. Join me in our petition calling for a national plan to save our oceans.

A new retail phenomenon from Japan which allows customers to walk away with free products is to launch in Britain.

From tomorrow, visitors to Sample Trend’s central London store can try anything on its shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge. For a nominal annual membership fee of £60, users are free to enter the shop once a month and help themselves to no less than £250 worth of goods every year. The only ‘catch’ is that shoppers are asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try.

Known as ‘try-vertising’, the concept allows manufacturers to test products and receive consumer feedback before launching onto the open market. It is already very popular in Japan and now looks set to transform the fortunes of the embattled(嚴(yán)陣以待的) UK retail industry. According to new figures, stores are facing a Christmas crisis with the weakest High Street trading for six months.

Michael Ghosh, the brainchild(創(chuàng)意者)behind Sample Trend, said: “The concept behind Sample Trend is unique in the UK. It allows shoppers the opportunity to walk away with a number of real, full-size products of their choosing without handing over a penny.”

The concept of in-store try-vertising is simple but effective. Businesses across all sectors, from cosmetic manufacturers to beverage(飲料) makers, place new products on the shelves at Sample Trend and wait for consumers to try them out.

Customers complete a short 10-point questionnaire about the product, and the feedback they provide is used to make any last-minute improvement before the product is brought officially to market. The Sample Trend store stocks everything from cosmetics, food and drink, and household goods.

Ghosh, the former advertising and sales director for Disney Europe, said such feedback may also build brand loyalty from the outset---a particularly appealing prospect for new businesses.

1.What can we know about the Sample Trend?

A. It has turned out to be a success in London.

B. The goods in the shop are free for everyone

C. The customers can only go to it once a month.

D. It sells everything people need.

2.The word “catch” (in para2) can be replaced by _________

A. advantage     B. disadvantage    C. problem    D. requirement

3.The customers need to fill a questionnaire to________

A. give suggestions for the products

B. recommend the products

C. give feedback about the products

D. express their thanks
