Texting (發(fā)短信) is nearly universal among people with cell phones. While texting can be a great way to stay in touch and to share the feelings of daily life, it sure has a downside. 【1】 Read on to learn why it is time to put the phone down — even if it’s just for an hour or an afternoon.
【2】 We all know that cell phone use during the week hours can disturb our sleep patterns, but it's also true that texting during the day could harm our ability to get a good night’s sleep. In a recent study, researchers found that the more people texted during the day, the poorer their sleep was.
Your posture (姿勢(shì)) is suffering. Texting can actually harm your whole body. People get so focused on their phones that they end up holding their neck and upper back in uncomfortable positions for a long time. That’s why people coined the phrase ‘text neck’, which refers to postural pain. 【3】 Bring your phone to eye level while you use it. Oh, and give your phone a rest!
【4】 Your texting could be a liability to the people around you. A recent study found that one in three people was distracted by mobile devices while walking. And texting walkers were four times more likely to ignore traffic lights and fail to look both ways at a cross.
Your school or work performance will suffer. Researchers discovered students texting too much gave worse performance in class. 【5】
A. It makes you a less responsible walker.
B. It’ll do harm to your sleep at night.
C. It can prevent you from really enjoying the activities you treasure.
D. We can’t believe we still have to say this, but it affects your driving.
E. But it isn’t just college students who face texting distractions (分神).

【題目】Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches(溝渠)along the highway I travel daily to work.
There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours; the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful
flowers.
This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I've often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, "I'II stop on my way home and dig them." "Gee, I don't want to get my good clothes dirty.,." Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding tool one year for my trunk to be used for that expressed purpose.
One day on my way home from work, I was upset to see that the highway department had removed the ditches
and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, "Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done
it when you first saw them blooming this spring."
A week ago we were shocked and sad to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a serious brain disease. She is20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because of age and distance, we haven't been as close as we all would have liked. I couldn't help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband's sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful
memories that will bloom every year for us.
And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.
【1】 Why does the writer want to start a wildflower garden in her yard?

【2】 Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The blue flowers in the ditches always draw my attention.
B. We don't get on well with the sister-in-law in practice.
C. I never stopped to dig the flowers for some reason.
D. The sister-in-law lives far from us.
【3】According to the passage, the writer will .
A. stop to find the flowers whenever she drives along the highway
B. plant a variety of flowers in the garden in her yard in future
C. get as wonderful memories with the sister-in-law as before
D. get more close to the sister-in-law in the following days
【4】What is the theme of the story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. No sweets without sweat.
C. Time and tide wait for no man.
D. Opportunity belongs to whoever is prepared.

【題目】We’re trying to decide where to go on our vacation this summer. We usually go to the Lake Arrowhead for a few weeks, but we’d like to go somewhere else this year. We’re tired of doing the same thing summer after summer. Some friends of ours suggested that we go to Hawaii. That would be wonderful! I’m sure we’d enjoy a trip like that, but of course it’s out of the question. In the first place, it would be rather expensive, and in the second place, there wouldn’t be enough time. If we’re lucky enough to save some money between now and next summer, and if I’m lucky enough to get four weeks of vacation instead of two weeks, maybe we can go to Hawaii next year. As a matter of fact, if we wanted to plan a trip like that, it might be advisable to stay home this summer and not go any place. That’s one way we could begin to save some money for next year’s trip. Also, if we were to stay here, I could offer to work instead of taking two weeks off; then maybe my boss would suggest that I be given four weeks’ vacation next summer instead of two weeks.
【1】The author to spend their vacation this year.
A. is going to Hawaii
B. will go to Lake Arrowhead
C. has decided to go nowhere

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(溫度計(jì))for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. _____【1】__. We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale. Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.___ 【2】___ .
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水銀)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收縮). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.____ 【3】______.
First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap ; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole. __【4】____.
Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily. _____【5】_.
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.
A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
B.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
C.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.
E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees.
F.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal(把..粘住) them together.
G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.
