Wealthy Chinese do not have a good reputation(=fame), a survey by China Youth Daily and Sina.com has found.
The poll(民意調(diào)查), conducted last week, showed about 70 percent of 3,990 interviewees believe the well-off are immoral and not worthy of respect. Only 4 percent thought rich people are good, the survey said.
For the rich, to become popular, they need to do three things, the survey suggested.
First, they need to have a sense of social responsibility. Second, they need to be self -disciplined, and third, they need to have a caring heart.
The number of people who make at least $50,000 a year increases by 15 percent a year and, according to the China Economic Times, the country now has 1.5 million rich people.
The China Youth Daily and Sina.com survey found interviewees questioned how the rich became rich in the first place.
“Some rich people are thought to have accumulated(積累) their wealth through illegal means, such as bribery,” said a post-graduate student at the Communication University of China.
Even so, the survey found wealthy people who abide by(遵守) the law, have a sense of social responsibility and a caring heart, are respected.
The poll showed about 60 percent thought these kinds of wealthy people were worthy of respect.
The survey suggested many voters were much better disposed(懷有好感的)toward rich people from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Western economies——rather than the mainland.
Hong Kong property tycoon(大亨) Li Ka-shing was most highly regarded, followed by Bill Gates, mainland property tycoon Wang Shi and basketball player Yao Ming.
“Rich people on the mainland invest too little in charity and gain too much,” a student from Beijing Sports University said.
Yu Guoming, a professor at Renmin University of China, called on the heads of Chinese companies to think and invest in a long-term way. “Social responsibility is not only about charity, it also connects the company with the government and the public.”

HOLLYWOOD history has been made now that Kathryn Bigelow has become the first female to win a Best Director Oscar. “There’s no other way to describe it, it’s the moment of a lifetime,” said 58-year-old Bigelow excitedly, at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Bigelow’s film, The Hurt Locker (《拆彈部隊(duì)》), swept the awards with six trophies, including Best Director and Best Picture. The movie about a bomb removal unit in the Iraq War beat Avatar, the highest grossing (票房收入) film of all time, to the major awards. This was sweetened by the fact that Avatar’s director, James Cameron, is her ex-husband.
Bigelow played down (淡化) her success, telling CBS, “There’s really no difference between what I do and what a male filmmaker might do. I mean we all try to make our days, we all try to give the best performances we can, we try to make our budget, we try to make the best movie we possibly can. So in that sense it’s very similar.”
However, Bigelow’s cinematic journey is quite different from the path of female directors before her. Her movies are low on female characters and high on guns and steel. They focus on men: their fears, relationships and rites of passage (成長(zhǎng)歷程).
Point Break was her breakout film in 1991. The action film tells the story of an FBI agent who goes undercover (臥底) to investigate a gang of bank robbers. It was popular because of its strong but flawed (有缺點(diǎn)的) male characters. The Hurt Locker is in the same style. The war film is about an anti-hero, William James, leading a crew of competing men in removing roadside bombs around Iraq. James is addicted to risk taking and enjoys putting his fellow soldiers in constant danger. Many scenes are full of clashing (沖突的) male personalities.
Focusing on these male relationships, critics praised The Hurt Locker for avoiding obvious political statements (something Avatar was heavily criticized for), and instead painting a truthful picture of modern war. And is there an entertaining end to the story of Bigelow’s victory? She won on International Women’s Day. It is, after all, Hollywood.
52. Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the article?
A. Avatar is the most profitable film in history.
B. Bigelow is the first female director to win the Best Director Oscar.
C. Bigelow and James Cameron were once married.
D. The film The Hurt Locker tries to make strong political statements about the Iraq war.
53. What does the first sentence in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. Bigelow has a similar style to other female directors.
B. Bigelow usually wants to work with other females.
C. Unlike other female directors, Bigelow focuses on male topics.
D. Unlike other female directors, Bigelow has made other mistakes.
54. The text tells us that ________.
A. The Hurt Locker aims to show how men love danger and war
B. The Hurt Locker presents the clashes between male characters well
C. Bigelow was given the award because it was Women’s Day
D. Bigelow was proud of defeating a male director
55. The article is about _________.
A. the unique (獨(dú)特的) style of the first woman to win the Oscar for best direction
B. what makes Bigelow different from other female director
C. the award-winning film Bigelow made
D. the Hurt Locker beating Avatar at the Oscar

The young woman seated next to us at the sushi(壽司) bar gave off an alien air; her looks and style, we thought, made it likely that she was not American born.
But then she spoke in perfect American English, with the typical characteristic of many young Californians.
As it turns out, however, she wasn’t from these parts after all; she was born in Iran and spoke only Farsi(波斯語(yǔ)) until her arrival here two years ago. What classes, we wondered, had she attended to learn the language so well?
“I didn’t,” she said. “I used Rosetta Stone.”
Those yellow boxes sold at shopping-mall and airport newspaper stands may be the most recognizable example of PC-based language learning, but it certainly isn’t the only one.
With the growth of broadband connectivity and social networks, companies have introduced a wide range of Internet-based language learning products, both free and fee-based, that allow students to interact in real time with instructors in other countries, gain access to their lesson plans wherever they are in the world, and communicate with pen pals who are also trying to remember if bambino means baby.
Learning a language sometimes seems as difficult as dieting. The solution is to figure out how to stay interested after the curiosity wears off.
To fight against boredom, online language programs have introduced crossword puzzles, interactive(交互的) videos and other games to reward users for making progress.
Online courses are either fee-based, free or a combination. Starter kits(入門(mén)套件) of fee-based programs may cost just a few hundred dollars, but the cost to reach higher levels of comprehension and speaking can easily be $1,000.
While that may sound expensive, language company managers say it isn’t; college courses often cost many thousands of dollars to reach the same level.
So, cost aside, how do you choose which program to use? The answer is that one size doesn’t fit all.
55.   Which of the following is the fact about “Rosetta Stone”?
A.      Rosetta Stone is only a special stone with the name Rosetta on
B.      Rosetta Stone is a free PC-based language learning product.

A.      the woman is one of many successful language learners
B.      the woman likes Rosetta Stone very much
C.      many people are benefiting from the Internet language learning products
D.     Rosetta Stone is one of the successful PC-based language instructors
57.   We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.      they offer the English learners all kinds of free courses
B.      learners can communicate with teachers at any time
C.      students can compare notes with their e-pals about language study
D.     advanced online courses usually cost more than the college ones of the same level
58.   What information will be most probably provided following the last paragraph?
A.      An introduction of different online language learning products.
B.      An introduction of different language learning methods.
C.      The strengths and weaknesses of Internet language learning products.
