You really should finish compiling that boring spreadsheet, but you just can't bring yourself to do it. Maybe it can wait a little longer? Or it might just disappear if you ignore it long enough? You know the feeling.
According to Professor Piers Steel, of the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, 95% of people postpone important tasks at some point. But for some, procrastination (拖延癥) isn't occasional, but constant. Professor Joseph Ferrari, of DePaul University Chicago, found that 20% of the population of the world are habitual procrastinators. Sadly, delaying our duties isn't very good for us. As the poet Edward Young wrote: “Procrastination is the thief of time”.

【答案】The two selections presented above clearly reveal that almost everyone is held down by procrastination to some degree. In addition, people suffering from deep procrastination tend to experience more pain.

Many factors may be responsible for procrastination. To begin with, the task people are involved in seems too difficult to complete. Besides, due to an overconfidence in their abilities, people often fail to manage their time efficiently. Moreover, an individual may also choose to procrastinate because the job is not challenging enough. Procrastination has negative effects on our life, such as causing stress and anxiety, leading to health problem, impeding our ability to achieve our goal and so on.

So it's absolutely necessary for us to take action to beat it. Firstly, we can write down our tasks in a visible place with their due dates. Additionally, we can tell our family or friends about our goal because they will motivate us along the way. Last but not least, reward ourselves for a job well done.

Beijing Daxing Airport is Finally Open

Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), also known as Beijing New Airport, is the biggest airport in the world. It is also the second international airport of Beijing along with Beijing Capital International airport. Daxing Airport is located in Daxing District (the southern suburbs of Beijing). Its location was selected after thorough analysis. With a 46km-distance from Tiananmen Square, a 67km-distance from Beijing International Airport and a 26km-distance from Langfang City Center, Daxing Airport aims to become the main airport hub of the serving area. It is expected to handle up to 45 million passengers per year by 2021 and reach an outstanding 100 million in the future.

How big is Daxing Airport?

Daxing Airport was called “Starfish” because of its impressive shape. There is a huge terminal building (航站樓) covering a 700,000m area while the ground transportation centre extends to 80,000m. For the time being, Daxing Airport has four runways and 79 airport stands. The 4 runways’ size is impressive while the airport stands are suitable both for one twin-aisle (雙通道) and two single-aisle planes. Eventually, the airport will have 7 runways in total and will be able to serve about 620,000 flights annually.

Who designed Daxing Airport?

The airport’s design is pioneering. Its terminal building is the impressive outcome of the collaboration between ADP Ingeniérie (ADPI) and the architecture team of Zaha Hadid (ZHA) who tragically passed away in 2016. Then, in August 2018, Hong Kong design studio Lead 8 undertook the design of the new commercial terminal which is expected to respond to every passenger’s needs.

What are the designing advantages?

Daxing Airport was designed to show high respect to environmental protection. Besides, to simplify passenger procedures, there are only less than 600 meters between checkpoints and gates and a minimum waiting time for baggage claim. Furthermore, the designers paid great attention to the convenient ground transportation system of the airport. High-speed and intercity trains, metro and public buses will connect the new airport to Beijing city and other major areas in a fast and efficient way.

1What does Daxing Airport aim to? (不多于九個(gè)單詞)

2Why is Daxing Airport called “Starfish”? (不多于五個(gè)單詞)

3Who designed the commercial terminal? (不多于六個(gè)單詞)

Humans share Earth with many different kinds of wildlife. However, many of our animal and plant friends may not be around for much longer. According to a recent report on biodiversity, 1 million of Earth's 8 million species (物種) are in danger of extinction(滅絕).

Humans are mainly responsible for the danger. According to the report, the world's population has doubled in the last 50 years. Humans have used over a third of the world's land and 75% of fresh water to grow crops and keep animals. As a result, there are fewer habitats and fewer natural resources available.

Because of human activities, the global rate of species extinction over the past 50 years has been higher than it has averaged over the past 10 million years. The species extinction could have serious effects on ecosystems. We fail to notice when losing one species, then another, then… These are the types of changes we're observing where entire ecosystems break down. These developments lead scientists to believe that there could be a sixth mass extinction, the first to be caused by humans. No one want to experience one mass extinction like the one where the dinosaurs that died out last time.

Aimed at solving the problem, many countries have taken action. For example, China has banned the use of rhino horn and tiger bones, and the ivory trade, reported China Daily. According to Huffpost, there are things that we can do personally to save species. For example, don't buy products made from illegal ( 非法的)wildlife parts and reduce water waste. “Each individual action has an effect and every person can make a difference - through a mass we can turn the tide,” said Claudia Sobrevila, from Global Wildlife Program, according to official website of the WorldBank.

Tolerance toward one’s lateness

材料2:

There are few habits as annoying as someone making us wait. However, some punctually- challenged people have no intention of offending anyone. They still want to keep friends, family and bosses happy. They are often painfully aware and ashamed of the damage their lateness could do to their relationships, reputations, careers and finances.

Johnson, a doctor in New York, says his reputation for being unpunctual can sometimes be caused by a misunderstanding of opinion. “A friend will ask me to come over, and he’ll say ‘come anytime from seven.’ But if I do turn up at eight or later, he will be annoyed.”

Joanna, a teacher in London, for whom the most distressing (令人苦惱的) thing is writing school reports, never makes the deadline for herself. “I always spend weeks carefully considering everything about the reports,” she says, “just for fear that any error arises.”

【題目】閱讀理解
Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(獵食動(dòng)物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.
(1)A plover protects its young from a predator by______.
A.getting closer to its young
B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest
D.pretending to be injured
(2)By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" (paragraph 5), the author means______.
A.chimps are ready to attack others
B.chimps are sometimes dishonest
C.chimps are jealous of the winners
D.chimps can be selfish too
(3)Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.
C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
(4)Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Do animals lie?
B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?
C.How do animals learn to lie?
D.How does honesty help animals survive?
