2.SAN FRANCISCO-Only 21percent of workers worldwide are"engaged"-that's the word used to describe workers who are ready to expend some extra effort at work-while 38percent are disengaged,according toa new survey.
"Engagement is not satisfaction or happiness,but the degree to which workers connect to the company emotionally,and the degree to which workers are aware of what they need to do to add value and are willing to take that action,"said Julie Gebauer,a managing director of Towers Perrin,a  consulting firm,which surveyed almost 90,000workers in 19countries.
"Happy employees don't necessarily create better financial results, but there is a  definite link between engagement and a company's financial performance,"Gebauer said.
The survey found 21percent of workers worldwide are engaged,and another 41percent are"enrolled",which means they're on the road to engagement.
More than 80percent of the engaged employees say they contribute to the quality of company products,services and customer satisfaction,while only 40percent of disengaged workers agree.
Engagement helps retention(留置)too.About 50percent of engaged employees say they have no plans to leave their company versus 15percent of the disengaged.
"The fact that almost 80percent of workers are disengaged is likely costing   companies money."Gebauer said.
"The conception of engagement is really a financial issue,"said Gebauer.‘Organizations that have employees that are highly engaged deliver better financial results than those that don't."
In a separate study,Towers Perrin assessed data on 40global companies over a three-year period,measuring employee engagement at a certain point and then looking at the companies'financial results over the following three years.
Companies with highly motivated workers enjoyed a 3.7percent increase in profits,while companies with a lower level of worker commitment saw a decrease in profits slightly.
What makes for an engaged employee?It's not necessarily pay.While the level of pay is important,it's not among the top 10drivers of engagement.Rather than only using the pay,companies should survey their work force,much as they might study their customers,to assess what employees are seeking.
25.The underlined word"ienrolled"in Paragraph 4meansD.
A.engaged

A.50.

D.425.
27.What would probably be talked about following the last paragraph?A

14.If you need another reason to give thanks at the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day,how's this:people who maintain an"attitude of gratitude"tend to be happier and healthier than those who don't,according to an instructive article this week in the Wall Street Journal.
The WSJ's Melinda Beck reports that adults who feel grateful have"more energy, more optimism, more social connections and more happiness than those who do not, according to studies conducted over the past decade. Now a new study conducted by researchers at Hofstra University-the results of which are set to be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Happiness Studies-finds similar benefits of gratitude for adolescents as well.
Dr.Jeffrey J.Froh, assistant professor of psychology and lead researcher of the new study, surveyed 1,035 students aged from 14 to 19 and found that grateful students reported higher grades, more life satisfaction, better social integration and less envy and depression than their peers who were less thankful and more materialistic.Additionally, feelings of gratitude had a more powerful impact on the students'lives overall than materialism.
What the majority of the research suggests is that gratitude should be chronic(長期的) in order to make a lasting difference in well-being.Dr.Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at the University of California,Davis, and a pioneer in gratitude research, told the WSJ that in order to reap(收獲)all of its benefits, feeling gratitude must be rooted into your personality, and you must frequently acknowledge and be thankful for the role other people play in your happiness:"The key is not to leave it on the Thanksgiving table,"he said.
For older children and adults, one simple way to cultivate gratitude is to literally count your blessings.Keep a journal and regularly record whatever you are grateful for that day.Be specific.Listing"my friends,my school,my dog"day after day means that"gratitude tiredness"has set in,Dr.Froh says.Writing"my dog licked my face when I was sad"keeps it fresher. The real benefit comes in changing how you experience the world.Look for things to be grateful for,and you'll start seeing them.
Studies show that using negative, insulting words-even as you talk to yourself-can darken your mood,as well.Fill your head with positive thoughts, express thanks and encouragement aloud and look for something to be grateful for,not criticize,in those around you, especially loved ones.

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
