Hello Peter! How are you going these days?
In order to provide us students with an opportunity to exchange books and make better use of used book, our Student Union held a campus book fair on the afternoon of February 15, 2012.
At the book fair, students could sell unwanted books, buy needed books or simply trade books with each other. Like other fairs of this kind, prices were typically very low. Happily, I not only got rid of several books but also bought a few books I really wanted.
As far as I’m concerned, I love this activity, which is beneficial to us students. On the one hand, I felt my social skills had been well practiced and improved. On the other hand, this activity also gave us an excellent opportunity to feel a bit of the real world. I wish more events like this book fair would be held in our school.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Love,
Li Hua

On warm summer days with little or no wind, the air temperature in cities can be up to ten degrees higher than that of the surrounding countryside. This is a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “urban heat island” effect.
This phenomenon happens when pavement, buildings, and other infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) replace natural land cover. Large amounts of paved and dark colored surfaces—such as roofs, roads, and parking lots—absorb, rather than reflect, the sun’s heat, causing surface temperatures and overall ambient (周圍的) air temperature to rise. Unlike soil, paved areas contribute to runoff, which means that as paved areas increase, the amount of water available for evaporation (蒸發(fā)) decreases. Moreover, urban areas have fewer trees and less natural vegetation which help to control the heat by providing shade and blocking solar radiation. The surfaces of leaves also provide water for evaporation which cools the air, further worsening the heat island effect.
In particular, during summer, more energy is required to cool the insides of building and for refrigeration, thereby creating additional heat output. This in turn leads to higher ambient air temperatures, which can also significantly increase the formation of urban smog in an area, degrading local air quality. Such a situation may directly affect public health with individuals more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion and the effects of asthma (哮喘).
1.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.Due to dark colored roads, urban areas are becoming hotter each year
B.Dark colored surfaces reflect the sun’s heat, causing air temperatures to rise
C.Because urban surfaces absorb heat, air and surface temperatures increase
D.Rising ambient air temperatures lead to urban surfaces absorbing more heat
2.Which of the following is not a cause of the urban heat island effect?
A.The lack of trees
B.The demand for refrigeration
C.The blocking of solar radiation
D.The construction of infrastructure.
3.The underlined word “degrading” most probably means ________.
A.ignoring B.improving
C.highlighting D.worsening
4.The passage is mainly developed by ________.
A.giving typical examples
B.following the time order
C.presenting the effect and analyzing the cause
D.a(chǎn)nalyzing a problem and seeking the solution

“A very destructive seven-year old child kicked my legs and scratched at my hand,” said one teacher. “I broke up a fight and was kicked,” said another. Many people have heard stories like this. But the situation is more worrying still and it involves parents.
Every child, regardless of the circumstances into which they are born, has the right to achieve their potential, regardless of their parents' wealth and class. And we recognize that, as a nation, it is a long way to achieve this goal. But rights come with responsibilities and what worries people is that we are in danger of neglecting the latter.
Far too many children are behaving badly at school, even to the point of being violent to staff. This is terrible enough, but it is hard to be surprised since many children are just mirroring the behavior of their parents. Too many are starting school unable to hold a knife and fork, unused to eating at a table, and unable to use the lavatory properly.
We are in danger of becoming a nation of families living separate lives under one roof. The bedroom, once a place to sleep, has become the living space for the young. Spending hours in front of computer screens, on social networking sites or being immersed in computer games, children and young people spend little time with their parents. Parents are unable to monitor just what their children are watching.
Schools cannot right the wrongs of society and teachers cannot become substitute parents. Both parties need to work together. Parents must be helped and given confidence to take back control. They are responsible for setting boundaries for their children's behavior and sticking to those boundaries when the going gets tough. They are responsible for setting a good example to their children and for devoting that most precious of resources---time---so that children come to school ready and willing to learn.
1.What problem do people ignore in the writer's opinion?
A. The school violence.
B. The pressure of students' learning.
C. The right to achieve students' potential.
D. Students' responsibilities.
2.The writer's attitude to the behaviors of parents may be that of____________.
A. dissatisfaction B. sympathy
C. understanding D. tolerance
3.The underlined part in Paragraph 4 may mean_____________.
A. children don't live with their parents in the same room
B. parents care little about children's life at home
C. children spend little time with their parents at home
D. parents attempt to establish a good relationship with their children
4.From the last paragraph, we can infer that__________.
A. Schools can’t correct the wrongs that society does to teachers
B. Teachers have no responsibility for playing the role of parents
C. Parents should spend time with children making them ready to learn
D. Students are responsible for making themselves known in society
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Children’s behavior at school is worrying people
B. Parents expect schools to correct their children’s bad habits
C. There is no point in parents’ teaching children at home
D. Don’t blame teachers when it’s parents who are failing

Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.
Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.
Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?
Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?
1.From paragraph 1, we can know ________.
A. why early human beings cut skin from dead animals
B. how early human beings discovered the tools
C. what early human beings used the tools for
D. what food early human beings stored
2.The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it ________.
A. was very important to the development of mankind
B. led to the invention of machines in the early time
C. developed cooking abilities of mankind
D. was one of the first tools of mankind
3.The silicon chip is mentioned in the passage to ________.
A. show the changes of tools
B. introduce a new kind of tool
C. give an example of using tools
D. compare the effects of two kinds of tools
4.At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is ________.
A. out of order B. less colorful
C. hard to predict D. full of meanings

Finding a friend doesn’t seem like a difficult job. However, bad friends are easier to find than good friends these days. If you’re sitting there and wondering if you have a bad friend, let me define it for you.
A bad friend is someone whose jealousies and insecurities outweigh their love for someone. They night want to be a good friend but they’re too messed up in their own head to ever actually do it. They wonder if their friends are going out without them or if they’re being forgotten and left behind. People who are violently insecure don’t have what it takes to be the quality of a friend.
Bad friends are narcissistic(自戀的). They look for any opportunity to bring the conversation back to them. Worse, they might not even be aware that they’re doing it. In their mind, they might think they are the best friend ever, which is truly frightening.
Bad friends are quick-change. They’re by your side when you’re fun and you have something to give them but as soon as you’re going through a difficult time, they will become indifferent quickly. They won’t bring you cold medicine. They won’t give you a ride to the doctor, everything they do is self-serving.
If you find a friend who has these same characteristics, send them to your bad friend list immediately. Your friends are supposed to be the solution to your problems, not the source.
I believe your twenties are a time when you need positive and helpful friends. In such a time, friendships aren’t easy to maintain like they once were in school. Now we actually have to put work into it, we have to make a conscious effort to keep the friendship going. You need to ask yourself, “Is this person worth it? Do they treat me like a fool or what?” if your have doubts, try to make them clear by considering the past experiences. Toxic(有毒的) friendships do nothing but drag you down. My point is that you have to take care of yourself and stop getting in touch with your bad friends. Only surround yourself with people who bring out the best qualities in you. It may sound cruel but it’s true,.
1.The author believes that we can easily find a .
A. close friend B. poor friend C. good friend D. bad friend
2.Bad friends give the author the following impressions EXCEPT being .
A. outgoing B.insecure
C. narcissistic D. self-centred
3.We can infer from the passage that a bad friend will when you have trouble.
A. feel worried as you do B. try hard to help you out
C. do nothing but leave you D. pay more attention to you
4.In the last paragraph, you are advised .
A. not to treat your friends like fools B. not to keep a terrible friendship
C. not to be a bad friend of others D. not to doubt but ask yourself
5.What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us finding a friend is not an easy job for everyone.
B. To help us know about bad friends and get rid of them.
C. To encourage us to make more friends in school.
D. To advise us not to treat our close friends badly.
