Imagine yourself on a boat looking out at the horizon and all you can see is the water meeting the sky with no land in sight and you are sailing straight ahead to meet the world. Jesse Martin does not have to imagine: he is living in it.

On Dec. 7, 1998, at 17 years old, Jesse set sail from Melbourne, Australia on his boat, attempting to become the youngest person to sail alone and nonstop around the world. He sailed south of New Zealand, through the South Pacific, around South America, north on the Atlantic, back south past Africa, through the Indian Ocean and back to Melbourne. Even as a young child, Jesse had been an adventurer who traveled all over Europe and Asia with his parents. Born in Munich, Germany in 1981, he moved to Australia with his family when he was only two years old. They moved close to a rainforest in Cow Bay, about 3,500kms north of Melbourne, where they built a small house with no electricity or running water. Jesse grew up at the beach enjoying the outdoors to its fullest. At 14, he sailed for the first time with his father and brother, Beau. It was after this trip that he began to dream about sailing around the world.

Jesse’s family played an important role. “I was made to believe I could do anything, although there were others that were not so encouraging or supportive” he says. “People that I looked up to, respected and trusted told me I couldn’t. Thankfully, I trusted myself. There were people that said that the boat couldn’t be ready by the time I had to leave.” However, through perseverance(堅(jiān)持不懈) and belief in himself, he was able to do what many told him was impossible.

On Oct.31, 1999, more than 10 months after he set sail, Jesse Martin went down in history as the youngest person to sail around the world alone, nonstop and unassisted.

1By encouraging readers to imagine a sailing experience, the author wants to __________.

Jesse Martin does not have to imagine: he is living in it.

They moved close to a rainforest in Cow Bay, about 3,500kms north of Melbourne, where they built a small house with no electricity or running water可知,Jesse小時(shí)候住在一個(gè)沒(méi)有水電的小房子里,故選D。

At 14, he sailed for the first time with his father and brother, Beau. It was after this trip that he began to dream about sailing around the world.

結(jié)合文章和最后一段的However, through perseverance(堅(jiān)持不懈) and belief in himself, he was able to do what many told him was impossible.

On 23 June 2016, UK (United Kingdom) adults made a historic decision. More than 33 million people voted for the UK to leave the European Union (EU). In the referendum, the result was that around 52% of them—just over half—voted to leave the group of 28 countries. This is called Brexit made up to describe the “British Exit”. No country had ever left the EU before, so Brexit was a significant moment in European history.

After UK and EU leaders had lots of hard negotiations about how Brexit would work, on 22nd, January, 2020, Wednesday, the British Parliament finally approved an agreement about the UK’s divorcing the EU, which Queen Elizabeth II agreed to on Thursday. The deal was expected to pass in the European Parliament the next week. If everything went well, the UK would leave the EU on January 31, 2020. It did! The UK finally and officially left the EU at 11 pm on this day, ending a process that began three and a half years before. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brexit fans celebrated with fireworks and big parties. For many they called it the UK’s Independence Day. For many others in the UK, it represented the final stage of something they fought hard to prevent. Now the deal has been signed and Britain has left, but it doesn’t mean the life in Britain will change suddenly. Until 31st December 2020, freedom of movement will continue and this means UK citizens will have the right to live and work in the EU.

Making things even more difficult is the fact that the next challenge of Brexit has arrived. The UK and EU now have almost one year to work out the details of the relationship they will have in the future. Many experts express their common concern that making these new agreements will go through the same experience as the original Brexit deal.

A.Explanation.B.Vote.

C.Deal.D.Statement.

2What day was it when the UK left the EU officially?

3What can we say about Brexit?

C.It means a temporary loss for the EU.D.It brings UK people a new life overnight.

4What is the experts’ attitude towards Brexit’s next work?

1 Spanish people drink Coca Cola, wear blue jeans, watch Hollywood movies, listen to American music, and eat fast food, and they do all these things daily.

I think that American movies are a good way to spread American culture because often people are influenced by what they see in the movies. Most of the entertainment programs and documentaries we watch on TV are from America, and most of the movies we go to are made in Hollywood.

2 Now, in our cinemas, at least twenty percent of the movies which are shown must be from Spain or from other countries in Europe.

American culture is very much a part of Spanish life. It’s certain that many things from America are as much a part of their lives as Spanish things. For example, Coca Cola is as familiar to everybody as any typical Spanish product. 3

However, it’s different with western fast food. For example, I don’t think McDonald’s is as successful in Spain as it is in other countries. In my opinion, one of the reasons may be the life style of the Spanish people.4

On the other hand, it may be that McDonald’s hamburgers will eventually replace the famous Spanish tapas. It’s true that in every city in Spain you can find a McDonald’s, and they are more popular among the Spanish children than among the adults.5

A.Many Spanish people like to watch movies.

B.The Spanish people normally eat at home.

C.I’ve known Coca Cola my whole life.

D.Most Spanish people prefer to eat in restaurants.

E.The influence of America is increasing in my country.

F.In the last few years, the government has tried to protect the Spanish movies.

G.In any case, it’s obvious that American culture has become a part of our lives.
