【題目】 Our local Community Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I have been a member for four years now and I’ve taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports competitions and we even made a video.

But it isn’t all just enjoyment, we have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a social support group to help young people stop smoking.

We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local old people’s home. This idea came from a school visit to an old people’ home. My class spent an afternoon at a home and everyone found the visit very rewarding.

The old people at the home were very excited by our visit. They were very talkative(健談的) and they told us their personal stories. During our visit ,the home was filled with the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn’t always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn’t go outside the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.

Many young people like me do not live with our grandparents and we have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, many young people don’t know what they are like and we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in their homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.

Since the creation of our visiting group, over twenty volunteers(志愿者) have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evenings and a concert. But it is the individual(單獨(dú)的) visits which are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.

【題目】 It may not come as a surprise but the world as a whole is getting richer. Some people have more disposable(可自由支配的)income to spend on luxuries such as holidays, cars, TVs and smart phones. Recent data has shown that the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved in recent decades. So should we celebrate the fact that more of us now have a better standard of living?

Maybe not. While the gap between the rich and the poor in some countries is narrowing, there is still a lot of inequality in other places-some people have a lot of money and opportunities and others don't. A recent report by Oxfam and Credit Suisse revealed how divided many of us are when it comes to wealth. A lot of the money in the world is in the hands of very few people. In fact, 48% of global wealth is owned by the richest l% of the population.

But some countries are attempting to reduce this inequality and make the poor, less poor. According to David Bryer from Oxfam, Brazil has been taking "some really sensible measures--measures around having more progressive tax, around investing in a higher minimum wage and investing in central public services." Having a higher minimum wage can help people eat better and seek a better education. And more people with more money buy more things-and factories can produce more. In turn, a factory which produces more will need more workers. So, more jobs are created.

Other wealthy individuals are doing their bit to help reduce inequality. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, earned a lot of money from his company but when he retired, he and his wife Melinda, created a foundation to help the poor. He thinks that rich people should, of course, pay their taxes but he also advises that they should all "look at taking their wealth and being philanthropic (樂(lè)善好施的 ) , both in their own country and to help the global poorest."

Bill Gates feels that giving money to help poor people is "fulfilling". But if other super-rich people don't want to experience this fulfillment then, according to Oxfam, very soon the wealthiest l% will soon own more money than the rest of the world's population. Do you think that is fair?

1The first two paragraphs mainly tell us _________.

A.the poverty and inequality in a richer world

B.some sensible measures to make the 'poor less poor

C.the increase of global wealth in recent decades

D.the narrowing gap between the rich and the poor

2What is the government in Brazil doing to the minimum wage?

A.Limiting it.B.Increasing it.

C.Making it lower.D.Setting it free.

3What do Bill and Melinda Gates think very rich people should do with some of their money?

A.Spend it on their luxuries.B.Give it to help the poor.

C.Invest it in their business.D.Hand it over to their children.

【題目】(題文)Four Goals for Perfect Life

Healthy and Fit

The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. (小題1Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan(壽命), is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits.

Excellent Relationships

(小題2Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, has more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.

Do What You Love

The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. (小題3You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.

(小題4

The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. (小題5You want to be completely free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without using the price listings to determine what you want to eat.

A.You don’t want to get the job.

B.Achieve Financial Independence

C.Money is the most important.

D.You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again.

E.You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted faster.

F.The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships — intimate, personal or social — with the people we like and respect, and who like, love and respect us in turn.

G.We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness.

【題目】I was interested in reading a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionarycombining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building.

1 In the afternoon, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a cuddle (擁抱). There are trips out and birthday parties too.

2The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention, and respond well because someone has time for them. They see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. They are more active and more interested in life when the children are around and they take more interest in their appearance too.

3There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the sameincreasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. And more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. 4

That’s why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. 5 Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example.

Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another, perhaps reading with children who need extra attention.

A.The advantages are enormous for everyone concerned.

B.There are examples of successful attempts all over the world.

C.Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young.

D.However, there are some similarities between the old and the young

E.The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities.

F.No previous experience can we use to communicate between them.

G.It’s a major problem in many societies.
