Surfing: It's Not Just for Boys Anymore
If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or volleyball. I happen to be one of the few girls who would      : surfing. But isn't that a boy thing? Some people     . Most certainly not.
I started surfing about five years ago and      in love with the sport on the very first day. Riding that first      was the best feeling I had ever experienced.
When I try to       surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my      , there's nothing like it. It involves body,        , and soul. There's sand between my toes and cool, salt water all     us. The feeling I get when I'm surfing across that     , becoming one with the    , is like I'm weightless.
The one thing I can       from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge. You can never be the "best surfer" because the ocean     an uncountable variety of waves that nobody can ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are very aggressive and     . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it       from any other sport.
I've      to tell every girl I know to do something that people don't think girls can do. It's part of being human to advance to new     , so shouldn't it be expected that girls should step up and start     the limits of things boys and men used to dominate(主宰)?
There're women    side by side with the President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys      the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to      , and they will.

“Just ate chicken feet for lunch. ”These were the words I wrote on my blog yesterday. By the next day there were hundreds of comments from my friends. They included “OH MY GOD! That is so disgusting(令人厭惡的)! ”, “What were they like? ” and “Why can’t you eat sandwiches like everyone else? ”

To Chinese people, chicken feet are a normal snack. To my friends in Britain, the thought of eating a chicken’s feet is weird(不可思議的). As weird, in fact, as eating a bullfrog(牛蛙), scorpion(蝎子), snake, or turtle.
But if there are two things I love more than anything else in life, they are trying new things and food.
I arrived in Beijing five months ago. Since then, I’ve searched for the “weirdest” foods so I can try them, then treat my friends to some “virtual eating”on my blog.
One weekend, I went to Wangfujing, Beijing’s “snack street”. The trip gave me tons of blog materials.
“I chose a stick with three live, wriggling scorpions on it, ”I wrote. “And it was pretty good. The scorpion was warm and crispy. The legs did have a tendency to get stuck between one’s teeth, however. What’s more, I am sure scorpion stung(蜇傷)me twice with its tail in revenge. ”
Next came snake: “A bit like a cross between fish and chicken, with a slightly rubbery texture(彈性口感)and meaty taste. ”
Some people were actually angry when I ate turtle soup—especially when I posted pictures showing the poor little guy’s head staring sadly up at us from the bowl. “I am never speaking to you again, ”wrote one former friend.
Still, I will continue my culinary quest(美食征程).
Next on my list is starfish, though I feel I should have some vegetables too—algae, maybe.
So what am I eating, tonight, you may ask. Pizza. Well, a girl’s gotta have a break sometimes.

When his report card         during his junior year, it said that he had been         95 times from classes and had six         grades for the year. At this rate he         never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even         him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so         that I got down on my knees and prayed for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything         for my son. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm giving the whole thing up to you.”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man         himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.”         he could say another word, I choked up and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came         out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has        . It’ s out of my hands.” For a moment there was         on the other end of the line. The headmaster         said, “Thank you for your time, ” and hung up.
Karl’s next report card showed a marked         in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I         a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were         at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I        . “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really         me how much I was hurting you. That's         I knew I had to make you proud.”
