We often close ourselves off when unfortunate events happen in our lives. We try to forget the pain by pretending it doesn’t exist, but although we can try all this we want, in the end, we can’t hide from ourselves. 【1】 Here are some ways you can open your heart more fully.
1. Breathe into pain
Whenever a painful situation arises, try to accept it instead of running away. 【2】 By using our breath we soften our experiences.
2. Embrace the uncomfortable
【3】 We know how fear feels in our bodies: the tension in our necks, the tightness in our stomachs, etc. We can face these feelings of discomfort and let them show us where we need to go.
3. Spend time alone
For most of our lives we’re surrounded by people: our friends, colleagues, peers, family members, loved ones, and strangers. How often do we really spend time alone? 【4】 You can truly open yourself and explore whatever you’d like. The golden ticket here is not to let yourself become distracted; just see what it’s like to be alone.
4. Get outside of yourself

It’s natural to greet friends with a smile and a wave. 【1】 But what happens if your face and body send mixed messages? Would someone be more likely to believe the look on your face or the way you hold your body?
Scientists have recently tackled these questions. They found that when a person is looking at your face, she might not believe what she sees if your body language doesn’t match the feeling that your face shows.
【2】 Previously, they had found that the tone of a person’s voice can be more important than the words that are spoken. For example, most people tend not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, “I’m so excited.”
When it came to emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated(孤立的)faces and isolated bodies (with faces blurred out(模糊的)) that showed anger or fear. 【3】___
An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A scared face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth. 【4】 A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square, as if ready to defend.
These results told the researchers that mixed signals can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face, body language subtly(微妙地) influences which emotion they read.
【5】 If you want to be understood, it helps to avoid sending mixed messages./p>
A. Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists.
B. Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that confuses people.
C. So, your body language is important for telling people how you feel.
D. When you do this, your face and body work together to show your friends that you’re happy to see them.
E. An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight.
F. They also showed pictures in which angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies
G. Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds.

Growing up is not easy. Sometimes all that is need is someone to rely on. For many years, she was Mum. My mother was a career woman and has her own problems to take care, but when I needed her, she was always there. Her strength came from anywhere, I don't quite know, somewhere very deep. She was so strong that she would never break down, even while I went to her with all my little boy’s annoyed problems and shout at her. Her strength made me stronger and gave to me courage to try things other thought were impossible. A helping hand is always stronger enough to lift you up.

【題目】Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for. We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.
The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around.
But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces(光滑表面), roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be built until there was plenty of demand for them. Finally, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of moden road design.
In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (層) of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stones. A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same lime, metal hubs (the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充氣輪胎) in 1846. Alloy(合金) wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads (柏油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.
【1】 What might explain why transport wheels didn't become popular for some time?
A. Few knew how to use transport wheels.
B. Humans carried farming tools just as well.
C. Animals were a good means of transport.
D. The existence(存在)of transport wheels was not known.
【2】How is the last paragraph mainly developed?
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving discussion
D. By making classifications.(分類)
【3】What is the passage mainly about?
A. The beginning of road design.
B. The development of transport wheels.
C. The history of public transport.
D. His invention of fast-moving vehicles.
