Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Songtang Hospital,a care clinic for the aged and dying patients, during the second Global Youth Service Day on April 21.

Thirty student volunteers from the university’s School of International Studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially-decorated “careful huts”.They talked with them and gave massages to patients kept in their beds.

“I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people than talking with them and trying to cheer them up,”said Deng Yetao,20,a third-year student.“But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death.Their loneliness is worse than physical pains.”

“Even though they are suffering a lot,the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us.Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share.Instead of doing them a favor,I felt I was gaining a valuable lesson,”said Mao Xiaohua, another third-year student.

The fact that most of the patients in the 80-room clinic are aged people with diseases which will lead to death soon made the volunteers hearts heavy.

Ninety-one percent of the patients will spend the last days of their lives in the clinic, according to a survey by the hospital.“For people at this stage of their lives, loneliness is even more dreadful than death itself,”said Li Wei,president of the hospital.

Daily visits and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of their programme.A total of 330 000 Beijing students from 119 universities and colleges have visited the hospital. Many continue to offer services in their spare time. Some of them volunteer to hold the hands of dying patients during the last minutes of their lives.

Yin Hang,a student from Beijing Medical College, said he felt “the glory of life”as he saw the fading smile on the face of the old man who passed into a deep unconsciousness while he was holding his hands.

The unquestioned role of a student is to learn as much as possible through whatever means it takes to acquire knowledge.Teachers and professors are human beings and are therefore not perfect. No one knows the correct answer to every question even when you limit the questions to a certain field of study.Having certain skepticism(質(zhì)疑)about what they are being taught can help students to make the teachers even better by correcting mistakes and misinformation.

Students certainly have a huge role in their own abilities to learn.Teachers should act more as guides along the way rather than try to force each student to learn. The best teachers in the world cannot teach an unmotivated student. If the teacher, for whatever reason, cannot motivate the student, then the student must somehow find a way to motivate himself or herself.

One method of doing this is by becoming an active rather than a passive student. The more the student involves himself or herself in the act of studying, the better he or she can learn. One of the best ways to become more active is simply to ask the teacher or professor questions.Students who passively sit in a classroom and take everything that the teacher says for granted are not fully using their mental capacities to learn.

Better education comes from teachers who are able to get their students to think about a subject rather than merely absorb a certain amount of information.Having a healthy skepticism can improve a student's ability to both think and absorb knowledge in a learning situation.

Teachers are human beings and no one is one hundred percent right all the time, even in a classroom situation.Perhaps a teacher would simply unconsciously say the wrong word or pass on some misinformation that the teacher truly believed was correct.A student's question could prevent an entire classroom from becoming confused or misinformed.

There is of course a fine balance between a student having a healthy skepticism, and just being a downright skeptic. But with the proper attitude toward learning and a little skepticism, both the students and teachers can improve upon the learning process and maximize learning efficiency.

1.Which of the following is the author's main argument?

A.Passive learning results from passive teaching in class.

B.A student's ability plays a huge role in the learning process.

C.A healthy skepticism fully depends on students' motivation and ability.

D.A healthy skepticism and proper attitude contribute to effective learning.

2.Being passive learners,the students ________.

A.use little of their mental ability while studying

B.seldom involve themselves completely in learning

C.can hardly tell the right from the wrong in class

D.simply ask their teachers questions without thinking

3.According to the passage,a good teacher should ________.

A.help the unmotivated students patiently

B.instruct students in the learning process

C.make no mistakes in the teaching process

D.a(chǎn)nswer all the questions raised by students

4.The author will most probably agree that ________.

A.keeping skepticism to a certain degree is important

B.having a good attitude can ensure the learning process

C.taking everything for granted makes a student learn nothing

D.a(chǎn) teacher's ability can be improved by encouraging doubts

Many Going to College Are Not Ready
Only about half of this year’s high school graduates have the reading skills they need to succeed in college, and even fewer are prepared for college-level science and math courses, according to a yearly report from ACT, which produces one of the nation’s leading college admissions tests.
The report, based on scores of the 2005 high school graduates who took the exam, some 1.2 million students in all, also found that fewer than one in four met the college-readiness benchmarks (基準(zhǔn))in all four subjects tested: reading comprehension, English, math and science.
ACT sets its college-readiness benchmarks — including the reading comprehension benchmark, which is new this year—by correlating(聯(lián)系)earlier students’ ACT scores with grades they actually received as college freshmen. Based on that data, the benchmarks indicate the skill level at which a student has a 70 percent likelihood(可能性)of earning a C or better, and a 50 percent chance of earning a B or better.
Among those who took the 2005 test, only 51 percent achieved the benchmark in reading, 26 percent in science, and 41 percent in math; the figure for English was 68 percent. Results from the new optional ACT writing test, which was not widely taken this year, were not included in the report.
About 40 percent of the nation’s 2005 high school graduates took the ACT, and the average overall score was unchanged from the year before. Minority students make up 27 percent of all ACT test takers. Besides, there are also other worrying trends in the ACT report as well, including a continuing decline in the percentage of students planning to major in engineering, computer science and education.
50. The report from ACT mainly tells readers the problem that ______.
A. few minority students graduates took ACT
B. many who intend to go to college are not ready
C. the college-readiness benchmarks is high this year
D. the tests for some subjects are too difficult
51. According to the benchmarks in 2005, about how many students will not earn C?
A. 30 percent.      B. 70 percent.      C. 50 percent.       D. 26 percent.
52. Which of the following pictures can correctly show the numbers of the students who achieve the benchmark in different subjects?
A.        B.
C.        D.
53. Which of the followings can be found in the report from ACT in 2005?
A. The report about the writing test is very objective.
B. More boy students are not good at science and math.
C. The percentage of students majoring science declined.
D. The average score of 2005 ACT participants changed greatly.
