If you live in America in the 21st century you'll probably have to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It's become the default response when you ask anyone how they are doing: “Busy!” “Crazy busy!”. It is, pretty obviously, a boast disguised as a complaint. And the common response is a kind of congratulation:“ That's a good problem to have, ”or“ Better than the opposite.”

Notice it isn't generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU or commuting by bus to three minimum-wage jobs who tell you how busy they are. What those people are is not busy but tired. Exhausted! Dead on their feet. It's almost always people whose busyness is purely self-imposed work and obligations they've taken on voluntarily, classes and activities they've “encouraged” their kids to participate in. They're busy because of their own ambition or drive or anxiety, because they're addicted to busyness and dread that they might have to face in its absence.

Almost everyone I know is busy. They feel anxious and guilty when they aren't either working or doing something to promote their work. It's something they have chosen. Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance(令人安心的保證),a measure against emptiness, obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or tiny or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day.

Idleness is not just a vacation. It is as necessary to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as ugly as rickets. The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration.” Idle dreaming is often the essence of what we do”, wrote Thomas Pynchon. Archimedes' “Eureka” in the bath, Newton's apple :history is full of stories of inspirations that come in idle moments.

1.When many Americans say “Crazy busy”, they mean______.

A. they are really tired of their present situation

B. they are really proud of their present life

C. they are complaining about their current work

D. their life are full of all kinds of problems

2.The writer mentions Archimedes'“Eureka” and Newton's apple to show that________.

A. history is full of interesting stories

B. Archimedes and Newton were very busy, so they made great discoveries

C. people may get inspiration when they are idle

D. inspirations come from hard work

3.The word “its” in the second paragraph refers to_________________.

 ambition       B. anxiety                 C. busyness                      D. dread

4.From the article, we can infer that ___________________.

A. generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU tell you they are busy

B. “Dead on their feet” means “being tired out”

C. all the kids are self-imposed due to the drive and motivation

D. The author seems to agree that idleness is better than busyness

It’s hardly surprising that weather is a favorite topic for so many people around the world---it affects where we choose to live, what we wear, our moods, and perhaps even our national characteristics.Studies have shown that changeable weather can make it difficult to concentrate, cloudy skies slow down reaction, and high humidity with hot, dry winds makes many people bad-tempered.
If you live in a place like Britain, where the weather seems to change daily if not hourly, you could be forgiven for thinking that the weather is random. In fact, the weather is controlled by systems which move around areas of the globe. In the UK the weather depends on depressions, often called lows, and anticyclones, also known as highs. These systems start in the Atlantic Ocean, and make their way across the British Isles from the west to the east.Highs bring sunny weather, while lows bring rain and wind.In modern times, human activities seem to be altering weather patterns.Gases produced by heavy industry change the temperature of the Earth’s surface, and affect cloud formation. Some researchers say that factories in Europe and North America may have been one of the causes of the droughts in Africa in the 1980s.
The human race has always tried to guess the weather, especially in areas of the world where there are frequent changes.Traditional rhymes point to early attempts to identify weather patterns, popular poems include:
Red sky at night, shepherds’ delight; red sky in the morning, shepherds’ warning.
Flies will swarm before a storm.
Rain before 7, clear by 11.
While folk wisdom can still provide a guide to help forecast weather, today’s methods of prediction increasingly rely on technology.Satellites, balloons, ships, aircrafts and weather centers with sensitive monitoring equipment, send data to computers. The data is then processed, and the weather is predicted. However, even this system cannot predict weather for longer than about a week.
66.When weather keeps changing, _____________.
A.people become bad-tempered
B.people’s reaction slows down
C.people find it hard to focus on their work
D.people become hungrier
67.What is mainly talked about in the second paragraph?
A.Changes in weather.     B.Weather in Britain.
C.African droughts.  D.Research on weather.
68.The weather in Britain is _______________.
A.random    B.moist C.depressing D.satisfying
69.According to a traditional rhyme, if there is a red sky at night, the next day will be _______.
A.windy      B.rainy C.fine   D.snowy
70.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Anticyclones often bring rain and wind.
B.Weather forecasting has been done for a long time.
C.Weather could never be predicted.
D.Modern methods of weather prediction are developed from folk wisdom.

To switch or not to switch, that is the question.Google’s announcement of its Nexus One smartphone(智能手機(jī)) happened over a week ago and I’m still receiving lots of e-mails from readers asking the same question: Should they give up their iPhone for the Nexus One?

Some people with iPhones, disappointed by American Telephone&Telegraph’s inadequate service and the high monthly cost, are wondering if they have really got something to replace it.Does the Nexus One offer the functions that Apple has led them to expect?

I’m on the fence myself, even though I never thought I’d be interested in anything but the iPhone. From my experience using the Nexus One, and from talking to people who have made the change, it’s not necessarily about the differences between the iPhone and the Nexus One.The phones are extremely similar in design and general feel.Instead, the decision can be made based on the software(軟件) services you use on your desktop.

My friend Chad Dickerson received a pre-launch Nexus One from Google three weeks ago.He said Google’s phone feels connected to certain services on the Web in a way the iPhone doesn’t.“Compared to the iPhone, the Google phone feels like it’s part of the Internet to me,” he said.“If you live in a Google world, you have that world in your pocket in a way that’s cleaner and more connected than the iPhone.”

Personally, the phones work perfectly with their own software, but both of them don’t make an effort to play well with other services.

1.Why are some iPhone users expecting a new type of phone?

A.Because their old ones are out of date.

B.Because they accept Google’s announcement.

C.Because of the limited service and high cost.

D.Because of the terrible software they can use..

2.What’s the author’s attitude towards the new phones in the third paragraph?

A.Negative

B.Neutral

C.Indifferent

D.Positive

3.In Chad Dickerson’s opinion, the Nexus One is ________ the iPhone.

A.better than

B.worse than

C.a(chǎn)s good as

D.a(chǎn)s bad as

4.The best title of the passage might be ________.

A.Apple’s New Smartphone

B.Torn Between Two Phones

C.Good Services Matter

科目:高中英語 來源:2010年吉林省高二下學(xué)期期末考試英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

Could a grizzly bear move to your neighborhood? If you live in the U.S. West, the answer may be yes. People and grizzly bears are living closer together now.

The grizzly bear is one of the largest meat-eating land animals in North America. In the early 1800s, about 50,000 grizzly bears lived there. Today there’re far fewer bears. Settlers built cities and roads where bears lived. Many bears were hunted and killed. Now only 1,200 to 1,400 grizzly bears have remained.

In and around Yellowstone National Park, grizzly bears have been making a comeback because of people’s efforts to protect them. Some bears are moving to areas where people live. People are also moving into grizzly countries.

People there have to learn how to live with their new, furry (毛皮的) neighbors peacefully. If someone leaves their barbecue grill(烤肉架)out overnight, or leaves their pet food or rubbish where a bear can get it, the bear will learn to come to their house for food. Grizzly bears that learn to eat people’s food can become dangerous, and they often have to be killed or moved. Also, it’s important not to surprise a grizzly. Besides, if you are hiking in a grizzly country, you should go with others and make a noise to make bears hear your coming and get out of the way. You may not want to invite grizzly bears to your next neighborhood party, but with a little effort, grizzly bears and people can live together peacefully.

1.Why does the number of grizzly bears get smaller, according to the text?

A. Settlers’ buildings break the balance of their living environment.

B. Land for them to live on is limited and they are hunted in large numbers.

C. Yellowstone National Park wants to control the number of them.

D. Living closer to humans makes them die from serious diseases.

A. One.         B. Two.         C. Three.           D. Four.

3. Compared with the early 1800s, the number of grizzly bears has got smaller by ______.

A. exactly 26﹪            B. over 36﹪   C. nearly 64﹪   D. about 96﹪

B. It is certain that grizzly bears and people can live together peacefully.

C. Grizzly bears are protected only in and around Yellowstone National Park.
