Chopsticks
Right now, millions of people are digging into their food with two sticks that have school the test of time as a utensil(烹調(diào)用具)for humans. But what’s so special about them? 1.Personally, I think they teach us the importance of:
2.
If you’re ever tried using them, you know that you can’t get what you want by just randomly stabbing at the plate. To be able to get what you want, you have to aim for it. There’s no way you can pick up everything in one go. Know what you want, and just do it. 3.
Practice
Using chopsticks doesn’t come naturally. You can’t learn to use them by just reading about them. 4.It is the same with the real life. You can read as much as you like about all the things you want to do, but it will just amount to dreams and theory if you don’t try actually doing it.
Slowing Down
5.Why? Because it allows your stomach to tell your brain you’re full before you overeat. Eating with chopsticks is a slower process, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes we need to slow down and take things one step at a time, so that we have time to think and realize that we don’t have to keep charging full speed through life.
A. Aim
B. Motivation
C. What can we learn from them?
D. You have to practice using them
E. Those who eat too fast were less successful at losing weight
F. Sometimes, a little bit of focus makes the difference between failure and success
G. A common health tip is to try to eat with chopsticks when you can

What can you imagine the life 100 years from now? In fact, no one can know it from now, but scientists studying the evolution of the society, human life and the world in general make such kind of predictions based on scientific data. According to their publications in scientific journals, let’s see how the world might look like in 100 years from now.
Embedded computers
According to predictions by Ian Pearson and Patrick Tucker, by 2050 the human body will be embedded2 with computers, at least in a big part of the population, and by 2075 most of the citizens of the developed world will have some kind of chips built in their brains to make them work faster and share thoughts in the form of computer data.
Superhuman geniuses
Developments in genetic engineering will create human geniuses who will live forever. Does it sound unbelievable? It is sure that there will be a way to influence the brain to increase the intelligence level and with the help of genetics it will be possible to maintain human body for many years.
Global currency
According to futurists, it is very likely that a global electronic currency will be created. They say that the local and national currencies will be few until mid-century and will gradually disappear, let alone metal currencies.
Three world languages
There will be only three world languages: English, Spanish and Chinese. Other languages will have no chance to survive through time. Futurists say that many minority languages are already extinct and the fac t that all educated people in the world speak at least one of these languages will help in this way.
Oceans as a food source
It is one of the most “confident” future devel opments, according to scientists, because if the world population continues growing at the same rate, it will reach ten billion. So the food will not be enough. Thus the oceans will be used to raise fish and to provide populations with fresh water taken from the sea plants.
Journeys into space
Most futurists agree on this and believe that some kind of tourist attractions will be created in space, although they will be affordable only for wealthy people.

He was the man who inspired the Beat Generation, and nearly half a century after his death Jack Kerouac is still receiving grateful letters from his fans.
Most letters are sent in the post to his last home in St Petersburg, Florida, and the mail box in the front yard is full to bursting. But others are delivered by hand, pushed under the front door or left on the doorstep.
They usually thank the author of On the Road for inspiring them to travel and be independent. “You remind me to stay true to who you are and to encourage a sense of adventure in all of us.” reads one letter, handwritten by “Cindy” on paper covered with pictures of butterflies and flowers. She adds, “I hope you’re writing, liberated and drinking a glass of wine.”
Another, signed “Friend of Jack”, reads, “I prefer to think of myself as a free spirit and a person who follows a path of her own choosing. You have always been my inspiration.”
His home, where he was living with his mother Gabrielle and his wife Stella, has become a destination for hundreds of fans every year.
Kerouac rocketed to fame at the age of 35, with the publication of On the Road in 1957.
But after becoming a symbol and leader of the alternative lifestyle movement, he struggled with that fame and claimed that he only wanted people to read his books.
Kerouac died just 12 years after On the Road was published. He was suffering from liver problem, following years of heavy drinking largely brought on by his love-hate relationship with fame.
Kerouac, the creator of vivid characters such as Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, died at a St Petersburg hospital in 1969, at the age of 47.
1.Why do people still write to Kerouac after his death?

Around four years ago, I received a call from the principal of our school as to the “Parents View” talk the next morning. He asked me to speak to the group. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panicky. The time from his call to the next morning seemed like years. The whole night, I could not sleep with many ominous apprehensions in mind. One of them was to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some courage. After delivering is successfully, I became more confident .l said to myself, “If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like the principal who educates others, I can now speak in front of others too.”

Nobody likes doing the dishes, but it turns out that doing this daily task might pay off in an unexpected way. According to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher might prevent the development of allergies.
Researchers in Sweden surveyed the parents of 1,029 children ages 7 and 8. They discovered that children whose families hand-washed the dishes instead of using a machine were less likely to have allergies.
Earlier research has shown that dishes washed by machine are cleaner than those washed by hand. So why would kids who eat off slightly dirtier plates be better off when we talk about preventing allergies? One explanation is based on a theory known as the “hygiene hypothesis (衛(wèi)生假說(shuō)),” which says the reason why kids develop allergies is that their surroundings are actually too clean.
Your immune (免疫) system keeps you healthy by fighting germs (病菌) like bacteria and viruses. But when you have allergies, it overreacts and tries to fight ordinary things like pollen (花粉) or certain foods.
Being exposed to germs, particularly early in life, is good training for the immune system, says the lead author of the study, Dr. Bill Hesselmar of Queen Silvia Hospital in Sweden. “You excite the immune system in various ways and it becomes tolerant.”
This study shows that while using the dishwasher might be easier, the old-fashioned method of cleaning up could be better for your health.
1.What’s the advantage of washing dishes by hand?
A. Hand-washed dishes are much cleaner.
B. It encourages people to do housework.
C. It helps prevent allergies.
D. Dishes are easier to wash.
2.What can we know about the theory of the “hygiene hypothesis”?
A. There is no harm done if kids live in a slightly dirty place.
B. There is no need to keep the surroundings clean.
C. It’s better for kids to use clean plates to keep healthy.
D. It’s wise to use a dishwasher to prevent allergies.
3.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Pollen. B. The immune system.
C. The germ. D. A certain food.
4.What’s the result when our immune system becomes tolerant?
A. It’ll overreact to the foods we eat.
B. It’ll lead to the development of allergies.
C. It’ll make germs in our body more active.
D. It’ll prevent allergies and keep us healthy.

How to Win a High School Election
If you plan on running for student office, you want to know how to win a high school election. 1. You need to consider the following key elements (要素) of an election.
* Learn About Your School .
Before you can be an official for your class, you will need to know about your class and the school as a whole. You can’t make a difference if you don’t know what to change. 2.
* 3.
If you want to make changes to some of the rules in the school’s policy, you will have to get on the administration’s good side. Ask to join in on meetings with school officials. It’s also a good idea to get to know some of the parents of the students who will vote for you. You can do this by attending PTA meetings. While at these meetings, don’t be a passive attendee. Ask questions and voice your opinion so you stand out.
* Get to know your voters.
4. And try to make good first impressions on them. Be careful, though. You don’t want to seem fake (假裝的) because then people won’t vote for you. Simply say hello and let people know you are running for whatever office you choose. If they seem interested in you, continue the conversation. If not, back off. Being pushy is another thing that will lose your votes.
Let yourself shine
Just as confidence is essential during your presentation, it’s also important every day. 5. Have fun with your election because students want someone who is real and friendly.
A.Stand tall, smile, and be friendly.
