If you have a love for animals, chances are that you want your children to have that love too. 【1】 And getting along with animals is a great learning experience too. Starting that kind of bond with animals while your children are young is really important for many reasons and here are just some of them.
1. Increase empathy (移情) and compassion(同情心)
Children that are raised around animals are more likely to develop good qualities. They are learning to care about something with positive attention and responsibility. Additionally, animals are empathetic and compassionate themselves. Through their own love and caring, they teach their own lessons to our children.【2】
2. Provide opportunity for responsibility
As children grow up with an animal, they learn to be more responsible. 【3】 They can help feed the fish or walk the family dog.
3. 【4】
A recently published article shows that children can improve their reading skills while reading to the family pet. This might be because animals are such patient and kind creatures that help lower stress.
4. Give unbeatable comfort during hard times
Life is not always easy. 【5】 When there is a family pet, that pet is always there for the family to offer comfort. That pet keeps his company when your child feels lonely. 【題目】Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive: to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously(下意識地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not server. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and stories, and know that they are cheering me on.”
【1】To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should ________.
A. forget daily fear and pain B. ask others for decisions
C. choose the right example D. stay away from stars
【2】According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are ________.
A. desperate to insurance others with their knowledge
B. willing to accept others’ ideas
C. eager to discover what their ancestors did
D. ready to turn their original ideas into reality
【3】What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To highlight the importance of creatively.
B. To criticize the characters of role models.
C. To compare imitation with creation.
D. To explain the meaning of success.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth , is of great importance to African ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(棲息地).
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
(1)What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants.
B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C.The effect of African elephants' search for food.
D.The eating habit of African elephants.
(2)What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?
A.Fixing the time.
B.Worsening the state.
C.Improving the quality.
D.Deciding the conditions.
(3)What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A.They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B.They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C.They are home to many endangered animals.
D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
(4)The passage is developed mainly by________.
A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B.pointing out similarities and differences
C.describing the changes in space order
D.giving examples

It is important to introduce yourself in a creative, memorable way to distinguish yourself from the crowd. Since being witty(言辭詼諧的) doesn't always come easily, try one of these creative introductions and separate yourself from the rest.
Write your first or last name on a piece of paper. So if your name is Tom, you might say you are tireless, optimistic and mild.
Then say that you will do so in the words of your“best and worst critic”— your mother. By breaking the ice in this way, you can go on in either a humorous or serious fashion.
Introduce yourself silently, by drawing a picture of yourself on a large sheet of paper. In fact, in some situations, it may be better if you don't. Put a title at the top of your drawing, if you like, such as “Hello! This is me.”
Turn the traditional introduction upside down by describing yourself in exactly opposite terms of who you are. Have fun with this“back door approach”, and keep people guessing just how much you are exaggerating(夸張). Don't bother calling me tomorrow, because I will be hiding in a closet. Send text messages to my girlfriend while I drink a Bud Light on the job.
A. This introduction requires you to be gifted in art.
B. Freely admit that you don't like talking about yourself.
C. It doesn't matter whether you have artistic abilities or not.
D. For example: I am probaby the laziest person you will ever meet.
E. Use each letter as the first letter in an adjective that describes you.
F. Bring in the surprise factor— sometimes known as the shock factor.
G. After all, anybody can stand up and announce their name, business title and job responsibilities.

【題目】After years of sales growth, major publishers reported a fall in their e-book sales for the first time this year, introducing new doubts about the potential of e-books in the publishing industry. Yet despite the increasing realization that digital and print can easily coexist in the market, the question of whether the e-book will “kill” the print book continues to surface. It doesn’t matter if the intention is to predict or dismiss this possibility; the potential disappearance of the book does not stop to inspire our imagination.
After television was invented, many claimed radio would die. But radio ended up surviving by finding new uses; people started listening in cars, during tram rides and on factory floors. The myth of the disappearing book isn’t new, either. As early as 1894, there was guess that they’d be replaced by what we today call audiobooks. This happened again and again. Movies, radio, television, and smartphones—all conspired to destroy print books as a source of culture and entertainment. It is not by chance that the idea of the death of the book surfaces in moments of technological change.
We create emotional bonds with media as they become an integral part of our life. The emergence of a new technology —like e-readers — doesn’t just in indicate economic and social change. It also causes us to adjust our relationship with something that has become an integral part of our day-to-day life.
The ones who still worry for the disappearance of print books may rest assured: Books have endured many technical revolutions and are in the best position to survive this one. Yet the myth of the disappearing medium will continue to provide an appealing narrative about both the power of technology and our dislike to change. Easy to remember and to spread, the story of the death of media reflects our excitement for the future, as well as our fear of losing parts of our intimate world一and finally, of ourselves.
【1】What do people tend to believe according to the text?
A. Print books will disappear in the end.
B. It is unwise to invest in e-books.
C. Digital and print will exist all the time.
D. The death of books is just an imagination.
【2】What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The forms of books change with new technology.
B. Books have a bright digital future actually.
C. Culture will disappear with the end of books.
D. The idea of book death follows technological changes.
【3】What does the myth of disappearing books reflect?
A. Our doubt about the power of technology.
B. Our fear of losing ourselves in society.
C. Our preference for new technology.
D. Our pleasure of experiencing technical revolutions.

【題目】Foreign drivers will have a pay on-the-spot fines of up to £900 for breaking the traffic law to be carried out next month.
If they do not have enough cash or a working credit card, their vehicles will clamped(扣留) until they pay—and they will face an additional fee of £80 for getting back their vehicles.
The law will also apply to British citizens. The fines will be described officially as “deposits” when the traffic law takes effect, because the money would be returned if the driver went to court and was found not guilty. In practice, very few foreign drivers are likely to return to Britain to deal with their cases.
Foreign drivers are rarely charged because police cannot take action against them if they fail to appear in court. Instead, officers often merely give warnings.
Three million foreign-registered vehicles enter Britain each year. Polish vehicles make up 36 percent, French vehicles 10 percent and German vehicles 9 percent.
Foreign vehicles are 30 percent more likely to be in a crash than British-registered vehicles. The number of crashes caused by foreign vehicles rose by 47 percent between 2003 and 2008. There were almost 400 deaths and serious injuries and 3,000 slight injuries from accidents caused by foreign vehicles in 2008.
The new law is partly intended to settle the problem of foreign lorry drivers ignoring limits on weight and hours at the wheel. Foreign lorries are three times more likely to be in a crash than British lorries. Recent spot checks found that three quarters of lorries that failed safety tests were registered overseas.
The standard deposit for a careless driving offence —such as driving too close to the vehicle in front or reading a map at the wheel—will be £300. Deposits for speeding offences and using mobile phones will be £60. Foreign drivers will not get points as punishment added to their licenses, while British drivers will.
【1】The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________.
A. explanation B. introduction
C. comment D. background
【2】The foreign drivers who break the traffic law and do not pay on the spot are likely to be fined up to ________.
A. £60 B. £300
C. £900 D. £980
【3】We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. many foreign drivers have been fined by Britain police
B. 300,000 German vehicles enter Britain every year
C. 25 percent of foreign vehicles entering Britain have failed safety tests
D. British drivers will be punished with points and fines for breaking the traffic law
【4】The new traffic law is mainly intended to ________.
A. limit the number of foreign vehicles entering Britain
B. increase the Britain government’s additional income
C. reduce the rate of traffic accidents and injuries
D. get foreign drivers to appear in court
