April 6, 2005 BERLIN-It has led to numerous expeditions, several mysterious deaths and plenty of books. But 60 years after Nazi officers hid metal boxes in the depths of Lake Toplitz, a new attempt is being made to recover the Third Reich's fabled(傳說(shuō)中的)lost gold. The Austrian government has given a U.S.team permission to make an underwater expedition to the bottom of the lake.

Groups of treasure hunters have been racing to Lake Toplitz ever since a group of diehard Nazis escaped to this picturesque part of the Austrian Alps in the final months of the Second World War.With U.S.troops closing in and Germany on the edge of collapse(垮臺(tái)), they shipped the boxes to the bank of the lake, and sunk them.

Nobody knows exactly what was inside. Some believe the boxes contained gold stolen by German troops throughout Europe and carried back to Germany.Others think that they contained documents showing where possessions confiscated(沒(méi)收)from Jewish victims were hidden. The state company that controls the lake, Bundesforste AG, has signed a contract with Norman Scott, an American treasure hunter, who hopes to solve the mystery.

Later this month, Scott will begin a detailed underwater expedition of the 350-foot-deep lake, though there is official doubt that there is anything left to find.“I really don't know if there is anything down there, but we want to resolve the mystery once and for all,”Irwin Klissenbauer, a director of Bundesforste AG, told the Guardian Tuesday.“The aim at first is to measure the lake.”He added:“This is a beautiful area. You have heard of Loch Ness. For Austrians this has been a bit like Loch Ness.Lots of people come here. And whether there is gold down there or not, the mystery has been very good for tourism.”

Klissenbauer said that under the terms of the deal--which allows the U.S.team to dive for the next three years-any treasure found will be divided between the Americans and the Austrian state.“Obviously if they recover anything which has a recognizable owner, under Austrian law we have to give it back.”

“English may be the global language of business but it is not enough by itself for companies to gain a lasting presence in many markets,” the European Commission(委員會(huì))says in a study published last month.

The study collected by the British National Centre for Languages for the EU leader, says over 10 per cent of 2,000 small and medium-sized(中等規(guī)模的)firms in 29 European countries sampled(抽樣)in the study have lost export contract(出口合同)because of lack of language skills. The study says French is used to trade with partners in Africa, Spanish in Latin America, and Russian in Eastern Europe.

“The picture is far more complex than the much-quoted view that English is the world language,” the study says.

Multilingual(多種語(yǔ)言的)Commissioner Leonard Orban admitted that English plays an important role worldwide, but he wants to improve more linguistic variety within the EU.

The EU's linguistic headaches have exploded with the group's expansion.Languages have become a sensitive topic in Brussels where English is increasingly eclipsing(侵蝕)French as the main working language of the organization.Translation of EU papers into EU's 23 official languages costs 1 billion euros(US $1.31 billion)a year.

“We want to be open not only to official languages of the Union, but also to others like regional(區(qū)域的)languages, languages of minorities, immigrants'(移民)languages and third countries' languages,” Orband said.

Many EU students have improved their language skills during non-formal learning activities.Young people from more than 20 different nationalities travel across Europe to participate together in many cultural programmes, language courses, thematic workshops(主題研習(xí)會(huì))and other activities that are organized in about 100 cities.

(1)

When did the European Commission say that English is not enough by itself for trade?

[ ]

A.

(2)

Which language is NOT mentioned in the passage?

[ ]

A.

B.

(3)

What about English in Brussels?

[ ]

A.

B.

English is not studied by university students.

C.

Most of people are interested in Russian.

D.

English is increasingly eclipsing French.

(4)

C.

D.
