At the beginning of a new year, I always ask my Chinese friends what their expectations are. I am  21 to realize that, they all dream of owning a car. Most of them  22   that sooner or later every Chinese family can acquire a car.
I don’t by any means contest the  23  of  Chinese people to enjoy the same housing conditions, household appliances and other goods that are available in developed countries. But it seems obvious that many of them have related to the mass ownership of  24   autos.
I know that it’s not   25   to sacrifice our personal comfort and open our minds to consider what is good for an entire  26    , rather than just for ourselves. In today’s China owning a car is seen as a symbol of  28    and success. Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Songtang Hospital, a care clinic for the aged and dying patients, on April 21, the second Global Youth Service Day.
Thirty student volunteers from the university’s School of International Studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially-decorated “care huts”. They talked with them and gave messages to patients kept in their beds.
“I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people except talking with them and trying to cheer them up”, said Deng Yetao, a third-year student, “But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death. Their loneliness is worse than physical pains.”
“Even though they are suffering a lot, the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us. Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share. Instead of doing them a favor, I felt I was gaining a valuable lesson,” said Mao Xiaohua, another third-year student.
Mao talked with two elderly patients for a whole afternoon. The fact that most of the patients in the 80-room clinic are aged people with diseases which will lead to death soon made the volunteers’ hearts heavy.
Ninety-one percent of the patients will spend the last days of their lives in the clinic, according to a survey by the hospital.
Daily visits and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of their programme. A total of 330,000 Beijing students from 119 universities and colleges have visited the hospital. Many continue to offer services in their spare time. Some of them volunteer to hold the hands of dying patients during the last minutes of their lives.
Yin Hang, a student from Beijing Medical College, said he felt “the glory of life” as he saw the fading smile on the face of the old man who slipped into a deep unconsciousness while he was holding his hands.

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift-$7,000,a legacy(遺產(chǎn)) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially(經(jīng)濟(jì)上),” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on(喜歡) comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before buying something.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed(分送). It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents —should enrich the whole community (社區(qū)) and last for generations to come.
Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

Heavy downpours last month in Rhode Island led to widespread flooding, causing millions of dollars in property damage and leaving thousands homeless. The flood waters also poured vast amounts of raw sewage(未經(jīng)凈化的污水) into the rivers and streams that flow into Narragansett Bay.

In decades past. Narragansett Bay typically experienced a late winter early spring algal(海藻) bloom that fed creatures up and down the water column. But in recent years, the waters of Narragansen Bay warmed greatly, meriting this seasonal event.
Mark Berman, an oceanographer with the Nationa. Marine Fishertes Service. Said the flood seemed to have sent the bay back in its normal state.
However, local, mutate and federal officials in Rhode Island leave been batting other algal blooms that, by contrast, are causing widespread harm to the Narragansett Bay ecosystem. During summer months, sewage and agricultural runnel flows into the bay. Causing large blooms. But inseam of becoming food for sea creatures, much of the phytoplankton is consumed by bacteria, which grow last in the warmer waters. The rapid bacteria growth leads to hypoxia decrease of oxygen in the water that can cause large fish tools. One such die-off occurred in 2003. when millions of oxygen-starved fish washed up on the belches of Narragansett Bay.
The flood’s positive impact will probably be a one-time event, Mr Berman said. Mcanwhile efforts to curb the harmhl summer honors continue; in 2003. for instance, Providence completed a $359 million sewage tonal under the city designated to reduce the polluted storm overflow into Narragansett Bay.

(7)------中偏難題
People generally use spices (香料) every day when preparing meals. Most of these spices are readily available in local supermarkets. However, in the 15th and 16th centuries, spices were as valuable as gold or diamonds.Spices are small plants or parts of plants, such as ginger, pepper, vanilla, and cinnamon, which are used to add flavor to our food. 1   Such a use for spices actually goes all the way back to Roman times. The Romans used spices such as cumin and coriander to help preserve food.
The spices came to Europe from countries to the east, such as the islands in the East Indies, Sri Lanka, and India. 2   Because of the long journeys involved, they were very expensive.
European sailors began to look for routes to these countries themselves in order to bring back the spices by sea.In 1498, a Portuguese explorer named Vasco Da Gama reached an East Indies island called Calicut. 3   In 1519, another Spanish explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, found a new trade route by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean, around the southern tips of both South America and Africa, and back to Europe.
4   Portugal was the leader until the end of the 16th century.Spain was in control during much of the next 100 years. Then, Holland took over. The Dutch controlled the East Indies, but, in 1780, England defeated them in a famous war. 5   They treated the people there badly and made them submit to the British government.
India finally became independent from Britain in the 1940s.Today, it is still called “the land of spices”.In fact, at present India produces 2.5 million tons of spices each year and produced more types of spices than any other country.
A.For centuries, Arab traders had carried the spices over land and sold them to European countries.
B.For the next four centuries, Western countries raced each other for control of the spice trade in these new countries, which they called the “New World.”
C.Though they might not be as valuable today as gold or diamonds, spices are still big business around the globe.
D.Six years earlier, Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus had been looking for spices when he discovered America.
E.The English then moved from the islands into India.
F.The history of spice is almost as old as human civilization.
G.In those times, spices also helped keep meat from spoiling.
