3.How many times do you have to fail at something in order to succeed?Did you know that THomas Edison failed 10,000 times while trying to invent the light bulb?He certainly had a"learn and do"atfitutle! He was able to turn each failed experiment into a successful way to invent the light bulb.So what can we learn from this? You can adopt the"fail forward"strategy too.
In reality, none of us axe failures. It's true,we will experience times of defeat, problems, and disasters, but remember, each one of us is meant to succeed in life. However,we must choose our fate.Henry David Thoreau said,"Men are born to succeed, not to fail."
We can never be forced into having a happy and successful life.Whether or not you experience success or failure is completely controlled by what you think and do.You are the only one who can choose the thoughts that will keep you from achieving the abundant life and joy that you are meant to have.No matter how difficult things may seem, say to yourself."I choose to be a happy and successful person."
Why do some people get what they want and others fail?I believe that getting what you desire in life takes planning, and it doesn't just happen by luck.So how do we plan for success?
It has been proven that successful people do things more differently.than unsuccessful people. They recognize the patterns of success and follow them;one of those patterns is planning. They plan what they think and do,which sets them apart. They know exactly what they desire, have an intelligent plan for getting it,and then work their plan. They know what success will cost them in terms of time, energy, and results, and they devote the right resources toward making their plans happen.

I lost all my friends. My family also said,"Get out of this house and never return here!"I then realized the truth-drugs were killing me."Unless someone told me how to escape from the desire for drugs,I will soon be dead,"I said.
Then one day,I read in a paper,"We help drug-takers!''I decided,"I will go and see what these people think they can do for me."So I stayed at their meeting place for seven months. But they failed. They did not take the desire for drugs from me.

Now I found these Betel people never left me alone.Yes,someone was always there with me day and night. Then one day I cried out to God,"God,please help me!"I know God heard my cry.I found I now had power to escape the desire for drugs.

18.In a few years,you might be able to speak Chinese,Korean,Japanese,F(xiàn)rench,and English-and all at the same time.This sounds incredible,but Alex Waibel,a computer science professor at US's Carnegie Mellon University{CMU)and Germany's University of Karlsruhe,announced last week that it may soon be reality.He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other.
One application,called Lecture Translation,can easily translate a speech from one language into another.Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary,Users also have to be trained how to use the programme.
Another prototype (雛形機(jī)) can send translations of a speech to different listeners  depending on what language they speak.‘‘It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you,"Waibel said.
Prefer to read?So-called Translation Glasses transcribe(轉(zhuǎn)錄)the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal(液晶) display(LCD) screen.
Then there's the Muscle Translator.Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words.The signals are then translated into speech.The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's face,according to researchers.
During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus,a Chinese student named Stan Jou had 11tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks,neck and throat.Then he mouthed-without speaking aloud-a few words in Mandarin(普通話) to the audience.A few seconds later,the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish:"Let me introduce our new prototype.''
This particular gadget(器械),when fully developed,might allow anyone to speak in any number of languages or,as Waibel put it,"to switch your mouth to a foreign language"."The idea behind the university's prototypes is to create‘good enough'bridges for cross-cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world."Waibel said.
With spontaneous(自發(fā)的)translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio, tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people, and leaders of different countries could have secret talk without any interpreters there.

51.Which of the following statement is not TURE?B
A.A lecture translation can translate what you said into other languages easily.
B.There is no Muscle Translator in the world now
C.Muscle Translators can translate what you think into speech if you just move your    mouth
D.The spontaneous translators will help us a lot.
52.What kind of equipment is NOT mentioned in this passage?C
A.Lecture Translation
B.Muscle Translator
C.Multiple Translator
D.Translation Prototype
53.What's the final destination of inventing the language translators?A
A.To make cultural exchanges between different countries easier.
B.To help students learn foreign languages more easily.
C.To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably.
D.To help people learn more foreign languages in the future.
54.What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph?D
A.The translator is so good that it can translate any language into the very language  you need.
B.The translator is becoming more and more common in the world as a bridge.
C.With the help of the translator,you only need to open your mouth when you want to say something without saying the exact words at all.
D.The translator needs to be improved before being put into market.
55.Where can this passage probably be taken from?B
A.A newspaper         B.A magazine on science

8.It turns out that nodding off in class may not be such a bad idea after all,as a new study has shown that going to sleep shortly after learning new material is the best way to remember it.
According to US lead author Jessica Payne,a psychologist at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, nodding off after learning something new is like"telling"the sleeping brain what to remember.
Along with colleagues,she studied 207students who habitually slept for at least six hours per night.Participants were casually selected to study declarative (陳述的),semantically (語義上) related or unrelated word pairs at 9am or 9pm,and returned for testing 30minutes,12hours or 24ours later.
Declarative memory refers to the ability to remember facts and events with awareness,and can be broken down into episodic memory (memory for events) and semantic memory (memory for facts about the world).People routinely use both types of memory every day-recalling where we parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be addressed.
At the 12-hour retest,memory overall was better following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness.
At the 24-hour retest,with all subjects having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness,subjects'memories were better when sleep occurred shortly after learning,rather than following a full day of wakefulness.
"Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory.What's new about this study is that we tried to shine light on sleep's influence on both types of declarative memory by studying semantically unrelated and related word pairs,"Payne said.
"Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory,this means that it would be a good thing to practise any information you need to remember just before going to bed.In some sense,you may be'telling'the sleeping brain what to remember."

67.The research led by Jessica Payre tries toB.
A.encourage students to nod off in class
B.explain the influence of sleep on memory
C.show students ways to improve memory
D.introduce students two types of memory
68.Which of the following can be an example of episodic memory?D
A.Light travels faster than sound.    B.Beijing is the capital of China.
C.π=3.1415926…D.Tom attended a friend's party.
69.The 24-hour retest shows that subjects'memories were better followingC.
A.a(chǎn) full day of sleep                           B.a(chǎn) full day of wakefulness
C.a(chǎn) sleep shortly after learning                D.a(chǎn) night of sleep after learning
70.What can we infer from the text?C
A.Nodding off in class is very uncommon.
B.People are better at remembering events than facts.
C.Reciting new English words before going to bed may help.
