French novelist Jules Verne (1828~1905) is often called the father of science fictions.Although he was not a great traveller himself, his characters journeyed to the moon (in From Earth to Moon),Under the sea (in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea),into a volcano (in A Journey to the Centre of the Earth),around the world (in Around the World in Eighty Days) and to many other places.
Jules Verne was born in the French city of Nantes in 1828.When he was a boy he ran away from home to work on a ship. However, his father soon found him and brought him home. After that he decided that any future travel he did would be in books. In 1847,his father sent Jules to Paris to study to be a lawyer.Even though he was busy writing,Verne passed his exams in 1849 with high marks.
When Jules told his father he did not want to be a lawyer, his father was very angry. He stopped sending his son any money,so Jules had to earn a living by his writing.Over the next few years he wrote many stories and plays which brought him only a little money. Then,in 1856,he met Honorine de Viane,a rich, young widow with two children. The couple married the next year and their only child Michel was born in 1862.
After his marriage,Verne worked as a businessman in Paris. However,he was not very successful at his job and spent most of his time writing books and doing research for the next one.In 1863,he published his novel Five Weeks in a Balloon and in the following year he published A Journey to the Centre of the Earth which brought him fame. His books became so popular and earned him so much money that he was able to leave his job and work full time on his writing.

Janice Fialka showed a new documentary (紀(jì)錄片) about her cognitively (認(rèn)知地) disabled son at schools and seminars across the country.Everyone seemed to enjoy it,but one comment from a teacher proved her family’s investment to Fialka was a success.
“In Baltimore an early childhood teacher came up and said,‘I have to apologize to the family of a 4year old with Down Syndrome (先天愚型),’”Fialka said.“She said,‘I told them to be more realistic about their dreams for him.Now I have to tell them I’m sorry.’”

Though he can’t read or write on his own,F(xiàn)ialkaFeldman reached amazing heights with the help of voice recognition computer software, tutors, and the embrace (接受) of his community.
At Berkley High School,F(xiàn)ialkaFeldman won the Social Studies Department Award for civic (公民的) involvement. In 2004 he received the Michigan “Yes,I Can” award for selfadvocacy (自強(qiáng)).
He finished high school in 2003 with a certificate of attendance, took a 10day trip through Israel with friends last year, and enrolled at Oakland University through the Transitions Program, which is geared (使適合于) to help the disabled go from high school to college.

I never thought I would have a lifechanging experience at WalMart.
Although my thoughts were only on speed, the checkout line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier.
There stood a man in his seventies, wearing glasses and a nice smile.I thought, well,he’s an old guy!
For the next few minutes I watched him.He greeted every customer before scanning the items.Sure, his words were the usual,“How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and engage them in brief conversation.
I thought it was odd.I had grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of robotic conversational habit. After a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just mumble something back.I could say,“I just found out I have six months to live,” and someone would reply,“Have a great day!”
But that wasn’t the end.
He gave them the change, walked around the counter, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. He looked the customers in the eyes.“I sure want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them.“You have a great day.Byebye.”
The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless. There were smiles and some sheepish grins. All had been touched by his simple gesture—and in a place they never expected. They would gather their things and walk out, smiling.
Of course,he did the same to me and I got to know his name,Marty.
Who was that guy?It was as if Sam Walton had come back from the dead and invaded this old guy’s body.
I had never walked away from that shop feeling like that.

小題3:What was most customers’ reaction to Marty’s behaviors?
A.They thought it priceless.

My mind went blank when I saw the gun pointing against the car window as we pulled out of the garage. This can't be happening to me. Then I felt the gun, cold, against my head, and I heard my friend Jeremy saying,“What do you want? Take my wallet,” but at the time I thought of nothing.
I remember being a little annoyed when the gunman pulled me from the car by the hair. I remember the walk to the house—Jeremy, me, the two men with two guns. I remember the fear and anger in the gunmen's voices because Jeremy was being slow, and I remember wondering why he was being slow. I did not realize that Jeremy had thrown the keys into the bush. But I remember that sound of the gun hitting Jeremy's head and the feeling as the man who had hold of my hair released me. And I remember the split second when I realized he was looking at Jeremy, and I remember wondering how far I could run before he pulled the trigger. But I was already running, and upon reaching the car across the street, I didn't crouch (蹲伏) behind it but screamed instead.
I remember thinking there was something ridiculous and illogical about screaming “Help, help!” at eight o'clock on a Tuesday evening in December and changing my plea(懇求) to the  more specific “Help, let me in, please let me in!” But the houses were cold, closed, unfriendly, and I ran on until I heard Jeremy's screams behind me announcing that our attackers had fled.
The neighbors who had not opened their doors to us came out with baseball bats and helped Jeremy find his glasses and keys. In a group they were very brave. We waited for the police to  come until someone said to someone else that the noodles were getting cold, and I said politely,“Please go and eat. We're OK.”
I was happy to see them go. They had been talking of stricter sentences for criminals, of  bringing back the death penalty(處罰) and how the President is going to clean up the country. I  was thinking, they could be saying all of this over my dead body, and I still feel that stiffer  sentences wouldn't change a thing. In a rush all the anger I should have felt for my attackers was  directed against these contented people standing in front of their warm, comfortable homes  talking about all the guns they were going to buy. What good would guns have been to Jeremy  and me?
People all over the neighborhood had called to report our screams, and the police turned out  in force twenty minutes later. They were illtempered about what was, to them, much trouble  about nothing.  After all, Jeremy was hardly hurt, and we were hopeless when it came to  describing the gunmen. “Typical,” said one policeman when we couldn't even agree on how tall  the men were.  Both of us were able to describe the guns in horrifying detail, but the two  policemen who stayed to make the report didn't think that would be much help.
The policemen were matteroffact about the whole thing. The thin one said,“That was a  stupid thing to do, throwing away the keys. When a man has a gun against your head you do  what you're told.” Jeremy looked properly embarrassed.
Then the fat policeman came up and the thin one went to look around the outside of the  house. “That was the best thing you could have done, throwing away the keys,” he said. “If you  had gone into the house with them...” His voice became weaker. “They would have hurt her” ——he twisted his head toward me——“and killed you both.” Jeremy looked happier. “Look,” said the fat policeman kindly, “ there's no right or wrong in the situation. There's just luck.”
All that sleepless night I replayed the moment those black gloves came up to the car  window. How long did the whole thing last? Three minutes, five, eight? No matter how many  hours of my life I may spend reliving it, I know there is no way to prepare for the next time—no  intelligent response to a gun. The fat cop was right. There's only luck. The next time I might end up dead.
And I’m sure there will be a next time.  It can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone.Security is an illusion(幻覺); there is no safety in locks or in guns. Guns make some people feel safe and some people feel strong, but they're fooling themselves.
