It was 6 pm when we arrived Belfast, so we went straight to the hotel that we booked online to check in after we got on the plane. On our way to the downtown, the taxi driver brief introduced the city, which had been in chaos for almost 30 years until the end of next century.

After dropped our bags, we wandered around in the streets. The city was peacefully and people seemed to be enjoying their life very much. The place that we had our dinner was called “The Crown”, a pub dated back to 1826, when the first train ran from Belfast to Lisburn.

We met two European girls having Chow Mein, fried noodles, when we were having a rest in the hall of the hotel later. They told us they have bought the noodles in a Chinese restaurant named Eastern Land. We decided not to go there the next evening so that we could taste it.

Back in the old days, when I was a child, we sat around the family roundtable at dinnertime and exchanged our daily experiences. It wasn't very organized, but everyone was recognized and all the news that had to be told was told by each family member.

But it's usually not children's television that children watch. Saturday morning, the children's hour, amounts to only about 8 percent of their weekly viewing.

Where are they to be found? Watching adult television, of course, from the Match Game in the morning, to the afternoon at General Hospital, from the muggings and battles on the evening news right through the family hour and past into Starsky and Hutch. That's where you find our kids, over five million of them, at 10 p. m. , not fewer than a million until after midnight! All of this is done with parental permission.

Television, used well, can provide enriching experiences for our young people, but we must use it with some sense. When the carpet is clean, we turn off the vacuum cleaner. When the dishes are clean, the dishwasher turns itself off.

Not so the television, which is on from the sun in the morning to the moon at night and beyond!

Parents must exercise some control and show some concern about the cultural influence on the child when a program not intended for that child is viewed. Parents need to intervene (干涉). Nonintervention may be a wise policy in international affairs, but the results of parental nonintervention will not be wise at all.

I was often laughed at my classmates before I turned 14 because I was always very nervous when talking to someone. Helpful and sad, I felt that I could hardly do nothing. You cannot imagine what great difficulty I have in my life. And later, something happened, what changed my life completely. It was an English speech contest and my mother encouraged me to take part in it. I tried my best to remember the whole speech “Believe in yourself” and practised them over 100 times. Today is Sunday. The sky is full of sunshine, and so does my life. At about 9:00 a.m. , I go to the bookstore with my friends. There were a lot of new book. I didn’t know which one to buy because these books were all usefully to me. At last, I chose two. At 10:00, we went to cinema. The film was called Titanic but many people were waiting outside.
