Malaria, the world’s most widespread parasitic (寄生蟲引起的)disease, kills as many as three million people every year—almost all of whom are under five, very poor, and African. In most years, more than five hundred million cases of illness result from the disease, although exact numbers are difficult to assess because many people don't (or can’t) seek care. It is not unusual for a family earning less than two hundred dollars a year to spend a quarter of its income on malaria treatment, and what they often get no longer works. In countries like Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Gambia, no family, village, hospital, or workplace can remain unaffected for long.
Malaria starts suddenly, with violent chills, which are soon followed by an intense fever and, often, headaches. As the parasites multiply, they take over the entire body. Malaria parasites live by eating the red blood cells they infect. They can also attach themselves to blood vessels in the brain. If it doesn’t kill you, malaria can happen again and again for years. The disease is passed on to humans by female mosquitoes infected with one of four species of a parasite. Together, the mosquito and the parasite are the most deadly couple in the history of the earth and one of the most successful. Malaria has five thousand genes, and its ability to change rapidly to defend itself and resist new drugs has made it nearly impossible to control. Studies show that mosquitoes are passing on the virus more frequently, and there are more outbreaks in cities with large populations. Some of the disease's spread is due to global warming.
For decades, the first-choice treatment for malaria parasites in Africa has been chloroquine, a chemical which is very cheap and easy to make. Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, malaria parasites have become resistant to it. Successful alternatives that help prevent resistance are already available, but they have been in short supply and are very expensive. If these drugs should fail, nobody knows what would come next.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly (完全地),four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation (猶豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “Learn through use”. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

Most people hate change, which is sad since we often go through intense changes in life. And for some of us, even the smallest changes can upset our day. So the question is: Why do most of us find making adjustments to our lives so hard?
Fear of change is nothing new. Over a century ago, the Parisians were unhappy over a particular addition to their city: the Eiffel Tower. In fact, the citizens were so angry about the plans for the tower that they protested its construction. As strange as it may seem, their anger was completely natural. They were given no choice about the huge change that was going to be made, so they became angry.
But we get upset over changes even when we do have a say in the matter and think about them carefully. Changes are brought about every day by the decisions we make: which school to attend, which job to take, whom to marry. Voluntary changes also make most of us uneasy because we don’t know how those changes will affect our future.
People have discovered that the key to overcoming the fear and anger associated with change is to be flexible. When they are flexible, people can adapt to new situations more easily. Being flexible is especially important in the 21st century as technology makes change occur faster than ever before. Those who oppose change, especially with technology in the workplace, may find themselves out of a job.
When change comes, and you have no choice but to face it, embrace it. A positive attitude helps a lot. In fact, the change may turn out to be the best thing for you. That new job you got may end up being much better than your old one. You may make the best friends of your life in the new city you moved to. Don’t merely focus on how you feel about change; instead decide to accept the change. The change is the reality, and it’s up to you whether the change will be a success or a failure. You never know your next change may be your lifes Eiffel Tower!
小題1:Why did the building of the Eiffel Tower make the Parisians unhappy?
A.Because they didn’t like the design of the Eiffel Tower.
B.Because they couldn’t avoid accepting the Eiffel Tower.
C.Because it was no use building the Eiffel Tower.
D.Because the Eiffel Tower seemed strange.
小題2:According to the passage, it can be inferred that what won’t disturb us are _____________.
A.the changes that have agreement with one’s will
B.the small changes we meet in our daily life
C.the changes whose effect we can predict and control
D.the changes that we discuss or consider thoroughly
小題3:How should we overcome negative emotions that the changes bring?
A.We are not supposed to face the changes and let them alone.
B.We should actively accustom ourselves to the new circumstance.
C.We should not take the changes seriously and avoid them as much as possible.
D.We should know that the changes merely bring us bad influence.
小題4:What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A.The change will probably make you fail like the Eiffel Tower.
B.The change is like the Eiffel Tower which is not good for our future life.
C.Your future life is never known just like the Eiffel Tower unknown to the Parisians.
D.Your future life is likely to be a great achievement due to the change.
小題5:What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Psychology of ChangeB.The ways to Overcome the Fear
C.Changes That Disturb UsD.The Bad Effect of Changes

Friendships are some of the most important relationships that we will ever have in our lives. But how to build a solid friendship? Here are five tips for you.
Tip 1. _____
True friendships can only be built in honesty. This is more than just telling the truth. Being real and open about who you are and your thoughts and feelings are a part of building a solid friendship. If your “friends” don’t even really know you, who are they really friends with?
Tip 2. Shared Experiences
As you build your friendship, you will share many experiences together. Some of these may be great adventures or hard times that the two of you go through together. These shared experiences are things that you will laugh about, talk about, and cry about no matter how much time passes.
Tip 3. Sacrificial(犧牲精神的)love
Love is the basis(基礎(chǔ))of all solid relationships. I am not referring to the emotion(情感) of love, but to the action of love. Love is what will cause a friend to get out of bed in the middle of the night to help another. Love is what will put aside someone’s own wants to make sure that their friend is alright.
Tip 4. Understanding
When a friendship is solid, it will be based on each other’s understanding. You may not agree with everything that a friend says or does, but you will be able to put yourself into his or her shoes to begin to understand. Offering understanding to a friend is very important, as it allows them to feel that they have someone in their corner that they can talk to and who will offer advice and suggestions, without having to worry that if they don’t always follow it, the friendship will be lost.
Tip 5. Acceptance
A solid friendship is one in which two people accept one another, faults and all, for just who they are. There is no having to build up false excuses, or hide away the “dark secrets” from one another. We accept each other as whole, complete, and totally unique people.
小題1:What’s the best title of Tip 1?
A.Introduction of yourself.B.Telling the truth
C.HonestyD.True friendships
小題2:Which tip can remind us of an English proverb “Love me, love my dog”?
A.Tip 2.B.Tip 3.C.Tip 4.D.Tip 5.
小題3:What’s the meaning of the underlined part “put yourself into his or her shoes” in Tip 4?
A.Exchange your shoes with his or hers.B.Try on his or her shoes.
C.Put yourself in his or her position.D.Force yourself.
小題4:What’s the best title of the whole passage?
A.A solid friendshipB.The most important relationships
C.Five tips for youD.Tips on how to build a solid friendship

A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points higher on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was connected to lower heart disease and obesity rates. The study of 8,179 people was reported in the BritishMedicalJournal.
Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarians — although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.
Men who were vegetarians had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ scores, between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarians but reported eating fish or chicken.
Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors.
Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.
Lead researcher Catharine Gale said, “The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians as adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life.
But Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said,“It_ is_ like _the _chicken  _and _egg. Do people become vegetarians because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?”
小題1: What’s the result of the research mentioned in the text?
A.Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life.
B.Children with a higher IQ are less likely to have heart disease later in life.
C.Intelligent children tend to belong to higher social class later in life.
D.Children with a healthier heart tend to have a higher IQ later in life.

B.vegetarians who ate fish or chicken were of similar intelligence with strict vegetarians
C.female vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians
D.vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians
小題3:What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A.Intelligence is linked to not just being a vegetarian but to many factors.
B.The rate of getting heart disease is linked to your lifestyle.
C.The link between a high IQ and being a vegetarian is still uncertain.
D.The link between a healthy heart and diet remains to be proved.

Intellectual property (IP) is a product of the mind that has commercial value. The concept dates back to 1623, when the first patent law to protect IP rights was passed. IP rights protect an artist from having his/her creative ideas copied by another. For example, if somebody generated an idea for a novel, that idea is protected by IP rights. If someone else wishes to represent the idea or develop it further, he/she must consult the original artists, who will normally be rewarded financially for its use. Back in the 17th century, IP rights were primarily carried out to protect newly developed manufacturing processes against stealing, but today intellectual property rights are also enjoyed by those who create music, art and literature.
In recent years, IP rights have been the focus of a great deal of discussion because of a technology which looks set to weaken them altogether: the Internet. Many years ago, if you wanted a recoding of a song, you would have to purchase it from a music store; if a novel, from a book store. In those days, IP rights were easily protected since it was very difficult to obtain intellectual property without paying for it. However, a lot of IP, including songs, films, books and artwork, can be downloaded today free of charge using the internet. This practice has now taken the world by storm, dramatically affecting the way in which we view IP rights.
小題1:According to the writer, in the beginning, IP rights were mainly of use to _______.
A.those creating music, art and literature
B.novelists
C.those not receiving financial reward for their work
D.engineers and inventors
小題2:What do we know about the Internet according to the passage?
A.It does not affect the way we understand IP rights.
B.It sells songs and films.
C.It makes IP rights harder to protect.
D.It prevents the production of artwork.
小題3:According to paragraph 2, what has “taken the world by storm”?
A.Intellectual property rights.B.Free downloading.
C.The Internet.D.The large number of songs, films and books.
小題4:A possible title for this passage could be _______.
A.IP Rights and Our Attitudes B.Ways to Protect Your IP Rights
C.The Present and the Future of IP rightsD.A History of IP Rights
