My soccer coach retired in last week. I wanted to do anything special for him at his retirement party. My mum makes the better biscuits in the world, so I decide to ask her for help. Mum taught me some basic step of baking. I insisted on doing most of the baking myself. I thought the biscuits were really well. My only mistake was that I dropped some on the floor after I was packing them up.
At a party, my coach, with a biscuit in his mouth, asked surprisingly who made them and joked, “I might have to retire again next year get some more of these biscuits.”
My favorite picture at the party is of my coach and me enjoy the biscuits with happy laughter!

During last summer holiday, I found part-time job, worked in a toothbrush factory at night. Not until I experienced it did I realized that it was no easy job. I went to work when my parents were going to bed. On the morning, when my parents were going to work, I came to home to sleep.
This backward schedule was very tough for me that I often felt tiring. But I am glad that I had this forgettable experience. Not only is it kind of fun to “rise and shine” along with the moon or stars, but also I learn to appreciate the hard work of those which are working while the rest of us are sleeping.

【題目】Some people are like homing pigeons: Drop them off anywhere, and they’ll find their way around. Other people, though, can’t tell when they’re holding a map upside down. Are the directionally challenged just bad learners?
Not all of your navigational (導(dǎo)航的)skills are learned. Research shows that your sense of direction is innate. An innate ability is something you are born with. Your brain has special navigational neurons—head-direction cells, place cells, and grid cells (網(wǎng)格細(xì)胞)—and they help program your inside compass when you’re just a baby.
In 2010, scientists carried out an experiment to study baby rats’ neural activity in their brains. Although the rats were newborns, the researchers discovered that their head-direction cells (which help them recognize the direction they’re facing) were fully grown and developed. The rats, it seemed, were born with a sense of direction. And they hadn’t even opened their eyes yet!
Humans, of course, are not rats. But the hippocampus—the brain area we use for navigation—is similar in most mammals. If the rat’s compass develops this way, then it’s likely that a human’s compass does, too.
If we’re born with a sense of direction, then why are some people so good at getting lost? The scientists found that the two other cells—place and grid cells—developed within the first month. Place cells are thought to help us form a map in our mind, while grid cells help us navigate new and unfamiliar places. The two cells work together, and that’s where the trouble might be.
People who took part in a 2013 study played a video game that required them to travel quickly between different places. Monitoring their brains, the scientists found that grid cells helped the gamers recognize where they were—even without landmarks. According to researcher Michael Kahana, differences in how grid cells work may help explain why some people have a better sense of direction than others.
【1】What did the 2010 research find?
A. Rats have a natural ability to recognize directions.
B. Rats’ hippocampus is different from that of humans.
C. Rats usually find their way without opening their eyes.
D. Baby rats have as many head-direction cells as grown-ups.
【2】What do we know about our navigational neurons?
A. Place cells let us know how to read a map.
B. Grid cells help us reach the place we are going to.
C. They help us use a compass when we lose our way.
D. Place and grid cells grow later than head-direction cells.
【3】Why are some people so good at getting lost?
A. They can’t remember landmarks.
B. Their grid cells can’t work very well.
C. They are unfamiliar with new places.
D. Their ability to follow directions is poor.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A. Human navigational skills.
B. The compass in rats’ body.
C. Why grid cells are useful.
D. How homing pigeons work.

【題目】If you put all the books you own on the street outside your house, you might expect them to disappear immediately. But one man, Hernando Guanlao in Manila, tried it and found that his collections grew.
He’s a lovely man in his early 60s, with one ever-lasting love—books. They’re his pride and joy, because, whether he likes it or not, they seem to be taking over his house. Guanlao has set up a “l(fā)ibrary” outside his home in central Manila. Readers can take as many books as they want, for as long as they want. As Guanlao says, “The only rule is that there are no rules.”
You might consider it would end very quickly. But in fact, in the 12 years he’s been running his library. He’s found that his collection has grown rather than become smaller, as more and more people help the activity. “It seems to me that the books are speaking to me,” he says with a smile, “The books are telling me they want to be read.”
Guanlao started his library in 2000, shortly after the death of his parents. He was looking for something to honor their memory, and that was when he hit upon the idea of promoting the reading habit passed on to him from his parents. So he put the books outside the door of his house to see if anyone wanted to borrow them. They did, and they brought the books back with others to add to the collection. The library was born. The library is not advertised, but somehow, every day, a steady stream of people find their way there.
To help the poorest communities in Manila, Guanlao doesn’t wait for them to find him on his “book bike”. He wants to set up a “book boat”, traveling around the islands of Sulu and Basilan. As we sat outside Hernando Guanlao’s house in the midday sun, watching people look through his collection, he thought it was worth spending all his time.

A. was a successful man
B. worked very hard
C. loved books very much

A. can’t keep books very long
B. need to have a library card

B. The library was Guanlao’s life center.
C. The library lasted a long time.

【4】What caused Guanlao to have the idea of setting up a library?
A. His good reading habit.
B. The death of his parents.
C. The joy of reading books.
D. Nothing to do in his daily life.
【5】What is the last paragraph mainly talking about?
A. Guanlao’s traveling around.
B. Guanlao’s daily activities.
