When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Be?fore they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation(住所).I suggested that they should stay at " bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my ad?vice, but they came back with some funny stories.
"We didn't stay at ' bed and breakfast' houses," they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought " VACANCIES" meant "holidays" , because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to house where the sign outside said " VACAN?CIES",which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said " NO VACANCIES" ,because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Span?ish, the word "DIVERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more, however,to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away!Later I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No,thank you."

From Daban, we move to another ancient small town,Loulan. Daban town is famous for girls and windmills, while Loulan is a myth(神話)in the desert.
Two thousand years ago, beside the beautiful and rich Luobu Lake, there lay Loulan ancient city of the Silk Road. Businessmen from every country gathered here and there were dancing parties. Everything showed that people in Loulan lived a rich life then.
However, two thousand years later, this rich land suddenly disappeared from the map of China. Then it became an area covered with sand and dead tree trunks.
Loulan was first "discovered" by a Swedish man in 1900. People from America, Britain, Japan and Sweden, all set foot here. Then in the 1930s, a Chinese named Huang Wenbi came to Loulan for the first time. He visited and studied this area and found many relics that were beautifully and carefully made.
It is recorded that the ancient city of Loulan was the capital of Loulan Kingdom during the Han and Jin Dynasties(朝代),and covered an area of some 100 ,000 square metres. Inside the city, there are the ruins of government offices, temples and other old buildings. Outside the city, there are some dried rivers and much farmland. In the past century many things have been dug out there including Han Dynasty coins, mirrors and many things from Greek and Roman. All these things show that a lot of business between East and West once took place there.
Lying on the northwest of the Lop Nur area, the Loulan Kingdom is now a lifeless area with endless "forests" of mounds(小丘)which aren't easily seen in other parts of the world. Its mystery has been attracting so many people from so many countries.

How to say hello in Japanese depends on when you say it. This is very much like different greetings used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture,it also de?pends on whether you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We don't get formal with our close friends. We seldom greet them with "Good morning" or "Good evening". A "Hi" is enough.
Although the most popular and most well-known translation for "Hello" is still "Konniqi-wa",it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for "Konniqiwa" is "Good day "or "Good noon", and I am sure you wouldn't like greeting people with a "Good day" at any time, and neither do Japanese like saying "Konniqiwa" when they want to say "Hello".
So what to do? Let's do it the way the Japanese do. Use "Ohaiyo gonzaimasu" for "Good morning", "Konniqiwa" when it's noon and "Konbanwa" to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things differ when you are on the phone. Just say "Moshi, moshi",which is actually similar to saying "Hello" over the phone, because one hardly ever uses "Good morning" or "Good after?noon" or " Good evening" right after picking up the phone. It is invariably the sweet old "Hello".
Next time,I'll tell something about my life in Japan.

A. How to Say Hello

A. Moshi, moshi B. Konniqiwa
C. Ohaiyo gonzaimasu D. Konbanwa
( ) 3. In the writer's opinion, .
A. Japanese culture is similar to American culture
B. Japanese people don't like using "Konniqiwa" as a greeting for the whole day
C. people don't need to be polite to their close friends
D. Japanese people are very friendly to each other
( ) 4. What does the underlined word "invariably" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Probably. B. Always. C. Sometimes. D. Likely.
