Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the
passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
The worst US economic recession (蕭條) in 70 years is forcing senior citizens out of retirement, leaving
them fighting for jobs in a weak labor market or risking homelessness.
A study by Experience Works, released on Tuesday, showed 46 percent of the 2,000 low income people
over 55 years who participated needed to find work to keep their homes. Nearly half of them had been
searching for work for more than a year.
"These people are at the age where they understandably thought their job-searching years were behind
them," said Cynthia Metzler, president and CEO of Experience Works.
"But here they are, many in their 60s, 70s and beyond, desperate to find work so they can keep a roof over
their heads and food on the table."
According to the study, many of the participants had no intention of working past their 60th birthday, but
had to change plans after being dismissed or following the death of the partner. Over a third of the participants
had retired.
Ninety percent of respondents 76 years and older planned to continue working for the next five years.
Huge medical bills due to a personal illness or that of a spouse (配偶) were also reasons for coming out of
retirement, the survey found. The longest and deepest economic slump since the 1930s is making finding a job
for the low-income elderly workers a difficult challenge.
The Experience Works study found that 46 percent of the elderly jobseekers were sometimes forced to
choose between paying rent, buying food or medication. Almost three-quarters believed their age made it harder
to compete for jobs with younger workers.
"This study underscores calls for the need to create policies that remove barriers to employment for older
workers and provide additional programs and services specifically aimed at helping older people re-enter the
work force or remain working," said Metzler.

4. What might be the solution to the problem according to the study? (No more than 15 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________
1. The worst US economic recession in 70 years
2. Because their age made it hard to compete for jobs with younger workers.

Faced with a tough job market, fresh graduates are dreaming of running their own businesses instead.
But a recent survey has showed that such ambitions lack the required support and remain just that-dreams.
The Shanghai Municipal Employment Promotion Centre poll of 1,276 graduates in several universities and colleges in the city, released last Friday, showed 59.78 percent of respondents considered the possibility
of setting up a company or at least a small store. "But they just stop at the 'thinking stage'," it stated.
Respondents put the top reasons for not going it alone down to a shortage of investment and a lack of
business opportunity. They also listed lack of business experience and social networks, the need for
advanced study and objections from family members as factors that stood in their way.
More than 90 percent of the interviewees said they would rather take up a job after graduating and then consider starting their own business two or three years down the road.
Guo Bin, a senior student in Shanghai International Studies University majoring in English, decided he
wanted to be his own boss last year. But he is looking for a job first. "If I fail to find a satisfying job, I
would like to establish a company in exhibition services," Guo said.
The Shanghai native has some relatives working in a local printing plant. With their help, Guo hopes to produce exhibition brochures at a relatively low price. He is also confident that his English language skills
can help him do well in the industry.
"Social networking is an important factor leading to business success," Guo said.
Guo said that the shortage of graduate jobs is the main reason driving more university students to set up a business right after their graduation.
Jiang said the university sets up a business guide team made of government officials and prof essionals.
They regularly give training courses to students who show an interest in having their own business. The
parents of university graduates are more willing to help their children start up alone. The survey showed "
Once you win the support of your family, you have won half the battle," Guo added.

3. In the view of Guo Bin, what is the key factor that makes fresh graduates dream of being boss  soon
after graduation?
A. Their family don't support them.
B. Their social networking is not good.
C. There are not enough graduate jobs.
D. They want to achieve greater success.
4. Who is this article mostly intended for?

Dear editor,
Several days ago, I heard that a dear friend of mine had killed herself. I was deep in sorrow by the sudden news. I can't keep calm any longer. 1_____.
Life is so precious. If we can slip into death in an impulsive (沖動的) moment, what use in all our
efforts and hopes? Our families, our ambitions, everything is flung into total darkness. 2_____.
Nevertheless, the suicide rate increases year by year, particularly of young people. Reasons may vary
from person to person, 3_____.
First, today's young people are morally weak. They hunger for success but can not face failure; they are eager to be understood but afraid of opening their hearts to others. They live in a wide world, from east to west, ancient to present, but their hearts beat in a narrow desert, closed tight, unable to communicate. Each becomes an isolated fortress (孤堡), lonely, and weak.
4_____. As a young teacher, she was devoted to her work but was disappointed with her students' occasional failures. She fell in love with a colleague but he deserted her. With no close friends, disappointed at work and in love, death seemed to her the only remaining choice and she took it.
Another reason for the weakness of today's youth, in my opinion, comes from society's pressures.
5_____. On the other hand, society refuses to accept that children sometimes do fail. But failure is more important because it can teach the young how to win next time.
What can we do to save the desperate young?
A. I'm always thinking about life and death
B. yet I think they share something in common
C. The young are forced to try too hard to succeed
D. My friend is a good example of that
E. And death allows no time for regret
F. people love success and are afraid of failure
G. failure is the mother of success

As more Americans go to mainland China to take jobs, more Chinese and Americans are working side
by side. These cross-cultural partnerships, while beneficial in many ways, are also highlighting tensions
that expose differences in work experience, pay levels and communication.
In the last few years, a growing number of Americans in their 20s and 30s have been heading to China
for employment, attracted by its faster-growing economy and lower jobless rate. Their Chinese co-workers
are often around the same age. But the two groups were raised differently. The Americans have had more
exposure to free-market principles. "Young Americans were brought up in a commercial environment," said
Neng Zhao, 28, a semor associate at Blue Oak Capital, a private firm based in Beijing. "We weren't. So the
workplace is a unique learning process for my generation."
Managers hiring workers in China appear to be paying for Western experience. Foreigners tend to earn
10 to 15 percent more than their Chinese counterparts (persons working in similar positions), said Michael
Norman, senior vice president at Sibson Consulting, an American firm. That imbalance does not go unnoticed
by Chinese workers. "There is definitely the belief that Americans get paid more for the same work," said
Ting Wang, 25, an associate at WildChina, a travel company based in Beijing. On the other hand, Chinese
workers have a deeper understanding of the influences, like Confucianism'and Communism, which play a
part in their country's culture and economy.
It is important and necessary for Americans working in China to adjust, said Mr. Norman, who works
on management and work force issues for multinational companies operating in Asia.
"In the West, there is such a bonus on getting things done quickly, but when you come to work in China,
you need to work on listening and being more patient and understanding of local ways of doing business,"
he said.
1. What is mainly talked about in the passage?

A. Cross-cultural conflicts.
B. Cross-cultural partnerships.
C. Multinational companies in China.
D. Different pays for the same work.

2. More Americans go to China to take jobs because _____.
A. they want to experience different cultures
B. Chinese workers are easier to cooperate
C. they can't find proper jobs in America

3. What does the underlined word "imbalance" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. Unfair pay levels.
B. Different working experience.
C. Unequal opportunities.
D. Different upbringing environment.
4. What can we learn from the passage?

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers (青少年). But last summer,
Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their elder son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends
than to his parents. "The door to his room is always shut." Joanns noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. "She used to cuddle up (蜷伏) with
me on the sofa and talk," said Mark. "Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something,
Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring
out which time is which."
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their minds. "In fact, parents are first on the list."
said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. "This completely changes during
the teen years." Riera explained. "They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents
last."
Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers'lives are in the best position to help them. To break
down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try
to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need
freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with
their children is a better way to know them.

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms,
order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet
pharmacies (藥店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack
health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol
consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or
they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly
game.
Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers-most of them
aren't nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project
found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They
shouldn't. Look up "headache", and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a
motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of
the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as "high quality". Recent studies found faulty facts
about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete,
inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.
The problem is most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web. "They use a search engine like
Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site
that looks authoritative (權(quán)威的), so it'd hard to know if what you're reading is reasonable or not," says Dr.
Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.
1. According to the text, an increasing number of American _____.
A. are suffering from mental disorders
B. turn to Internet pharmacies for help
C. like to play deadly games with doctors
D. are skeptical about surfing medical websites
2. Some Americans stay away from doctors because they _____.
A. find medical devices easy to operate
B. prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors
C. are afraid to face the truth of their health
D. are afraid to misuse their health insurance
3. According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______.
A. more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors
B. only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit
C. about 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality
D. 72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts
4. Which of the following is the author's main argument?
A. It's cheap to self-treat your own illness.
B. It's embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.
C. It's reasonable to put up a medical website.
D. It's dangerous to be your own doctor.

According to the United States government, people are classified as homeless if they have no place to stay
and no expectation of finding a place for the next thirty days. Although technically accurate, that is an
impersonal assessment of an enormous and very human problem.
The homeless population represents all of us Americans. It includes men and women, the elderly, children,
and infants. Its members are from all ethnic groups. What they have in common is poverty.
Currently in the U S, thirty-nine million people live in poverty. When money is really tight, paying the rent
or buying food often becomes a choice. Government assistance in the form of food stamps does help but, as
one homeless man explains, you can't pay the rent with food stamps.
With no money for rent, the streets and homeless shelters become the alternative.
Although men constitute the largest group within the homeless population, homeless women with children
are rapidly joining them. In fact, one quarter of the homeless people in the US are teenagers and young children.
People may become homeless for numerous reasons. However, there are certain factors that many of these
individuals have in common. They include a lack of adequate education and job skills. A majority of the teenagers
and adults have not completed high school. The abuse of alcohol and drugs is also a common factor. One third
of the adult homeless population abuses alcohol. While one quarter of the same group uses drugs.
Some members of this population suffer mental health problems. Within the past several years many
institutions for the mentally ill have been closed and their patients sent "home". Unfortunately, a number of those
people have no home to go to and they are unable to adequately look after themselves.
Job loss in today's economy has also become a real factor in the loss of people's homes. The breakup of
families through abandonment and divorce are also contributing factors, particularly when there are children
involved. The parent who is left to care for the kids with inadequate income may be forced to depend on the
homeless shelters to put a roof over their heads.
1. The writer thinks that the US government's definition for the homeless reveals _____.
A. an insincere attitude toward the homeless
B. an unbearable attitude toward the homeless
C. an uncivilized attitude toward the homeless
D. an unsympathetic attitude toward the homeless
2. The US government helps the homeless by _____.
A. giving them homeless allowance
B. giving them food stamps
C. finding jobs for them
D. finding residence for them
3. People become homeless for all the following reasons EXCEPT _____.
A. the lack of adequate education
B. the abuse of alcohol and drugs
C. the closure of institutions for the mentally ill
D. the poor performance of economy
4. The breakup of families is likely to lead to homelessness because a parent with kids may _____.
A. lose his or her job in today's economy
B. be unable to look after the kids
C. not have enough income
D. find residence at a homeless shelter

Daniel stays home on workdays. He starts his personal computer in order to connect with the office
which is about three hundred miles away in another city. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches
a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Daniel doesn't talk
to any other human beings, and he doesn't see any people except the ones on television. Daniel is imaginary,
but his lifestyle is very possible
. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from contact
with our fellow human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is separating us. Experts say, for example, that
many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as
office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals (終端) in their own
homes. They would never have to actually see the people they're dealing with. In addition, the way employees
are paid will change. Workers' salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper
checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking
will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts. Many
companies and consumers have already changed the way they sell or buy products. E-commerce, or business
done on the Internet, is becoming more and more popular. This, therefore, makes it possible for people to do
shopping without going out of their homes.
Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for example, was once a group experience.
People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music
is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living-rooms, they wear headphones to
build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing as well. Movies used to be social events.
Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on
television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch
movies in their own living-rooms.
1. After work, Daniel likes to _____.
[     ]
A. listen to music at the concert hall
B. watch a movie in his living-room
C. chat with his friends on the net
D. play baseball with his workmates
2. The underlined sentence "Daniel is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible" means _____.
[     ]
A. Daniel is a person full of imagination and he can make his life colourful.
B. Daniel is not a real person but the lifestyle of his kind does exist.
C. Daniel is only an ordinary person but he has his own way of living.
D. Daniel is a model who makes full use of modern technology in life.
3. What will the writer most probably discuss after the last paragraph?
[     ]
A. Games and sports
B. Personal banking
C. Music and films
D. International business
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
[     ]
A. We may no longer need to communicate wit other human beings.
B. Modern technology seems to be separating human beings.
C. We may no longer need to work in the office.
D. Modern technology makes it possible for us to work and entertain ourselves at home.
