I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.
There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription. I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.
This scenario(場景) is my nightmarish(噩夢般的) vision of the future, which hasn’t come to pass—at least not yet.
I should say I really do like many aspects of technology. I am a big fan of air conditioning in the summer and heaters in winter. But I am writing this because I don’t want machines to take over.
When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting: "When it comes to cashiers(收銀員), make mine human, please!"
After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (優(yōu)惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so crucial to everyday life.
It is being human that prompts(促使) us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment. Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.
1.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?
A. To indicate high technology can make our future life very efficient.
B. To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.
C. To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.
D. To predict how technology can affect we see a doctor in the future.
2.What is the main reason that the author prefers being served by humans rather than by robots?
A. Robots don’t offer to give store coupons.
B. Robots are indifferent and emotionless.
C. Services from robots cost less time and more money.
D. Robots can’t do a job as well as humans do.
3.What does the underlined word “element” mean in the eighth paragraph?
A. Humor. B. The ability to speak.
C. Methods. D. Effective communication.
4.What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The opinion about using man or machine.
B. Machines give people a lot of convenience.
C. Being human service is better than service from machines.
D. Being human service cost little money.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Do’s and Don’ts of Donating
Giving up your unused or unwanted stuff is a great way to make space in your home for the items that you do enjoy on a regular basis. Not sure where to start? Here are some do’s and don’ts of donating your belongings.
Do Prepare Your Clothes
You’ve thoroughly cleaned out your closet and drawers, and have a mountain of clothing waiting to be donated. 1. Make sure all buttons are accounted for, and that you can’t see any dirty marks, or damage.
2.
The number one rule of donating your stuff is to make sure that it’s in good, usable condition. Don’t pass along old clothes or furniture, chipped dishes, books that are missing pages, or toys with lost pieces. Nobody wants to accept your damaged belongings. Find a local company that will recycle these items instead.
Don’t even think of donating these items
With a little common sense it’s easy to figure out items that are ideal for donations.3.As a gentle reminder, it’s never a good idea to donate car parts, dangerous waste, construction materials and weapons.
Don’t donate large appliances
Major appliances such as stoves, fridges, freezers, washers and dryers typically reside on the ‘do not donate’ list due to health and safety reasons. All items accepted for donation must be thoroughly clean and in good working order. With secondhand appliances, it can be difficult to guarantee that they fit the bill.4.
Don’t donate recalled items
Every so often a product recall hits the news headlines. Highchairs, toys, holiday lights for Christmas trees—the list of recalled items due to safety concerns is endless. 5. A dangerous product should be thrown away, and not passed on to an unsuspecting person. Think of the well-being of others before dropping off something that’s viewed as a hidden danger in your own home.
A. They’re all acceptable items for donation, too.
B. Instead of donating an unwanted large appliance, call your local trash collection company and arrange for their safe disposal.
C. But unfortunately some people will throw away the contents of their home without a second thought.
D. Before you bag up these pieces, inspect each one to ensure that they’re in good condition and ready to be owned by someone else.
E. Don’t donate damaged items.
F. Clothes aren’t the only household items that can be donated.
G. Never donate recalled items!
