Women turn to online shopping

Women have jumped ahead of men for the first time in using the Internet to do their holiday shopping, according to a study published last week in the US.

For Years men have been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2004 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases were women.

“It shows how mainstream the Internet is becoming”,said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study.

Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because women traditionally make decisions about spending.

Users were more likely to shop online to save time. Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic(顯著的)increases in the online gift-buying population this time around.

However,three-quarters of the US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2004.They worried about credit card security,or just compared online prices with off-line prices, then dashed off to the shops to get the best deals.

“But even if shoppers don’t buy online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores,”said Dan Hess, vice president of Comscore Networks Inc.Hess said that actually most stores’ websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers. And most are able to ensure that gifts arrive on time.

“It’s all about making the shopping experience more efficient, more reliable and more comfortable,” Hess said.

Which of the following statements is true?

A.There were fewer women online shoppers than men in 2004.

B.Most of the Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 are women.

C.People in the US were more likely to buy gifts online.

D.More women shopped online than men in 2004.

From the passage we can infer that________.

A.men usually decide how to spend money in the family

B.women usually decide what to buy in the family

C.the Internet is used in all the shops.

D.more and more shops will sell their goods online.

According to Dan Hess,shopping online___________.

A.is unsafe   B.is convenient      C.is a waste of time   D.is cheaper

What can we know from the passage?

A.American people only buy gifts in holidays.

B.Shopping online is fun for women.

    C.Shopping off-line provides better service.

D.Young people like to do gift-shopping online.

Honeybees are disappearing for unknown reasons around the United States.Last winter, bees disappeared from 23 percent of American beekeeping businesses.Causes of the phenomenon, however, have remained a mystery.
Now, scientists from several universities and the United States Department of Agriculture say they have a possible explanation for the bee decline(數(shù)量下降).It is a little known virus called Israeli acute--paralysis virus (IAPV).The virus kills bees.Researchers in Israel first described it in 2004 , but until now, bee experts hadn’t paid much attention to it.
When trying to find out why the bees were disappearing, a research team at Columbia University studied bee colonies (群體), some with and the others without decline. The research turned up large numbers of two types of fungi (真菌) once suspected of causing the bee decline. The research results, however, showed that the fungi were almost as common in colonies without a decline as they were in colonies with a decline. The researchers concluded that the two fungi probably weren’t the cause.
Studies of the presence of IAPV, however, showed more interesting information. In those studies, done by a team at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, the virus showed up in 83 percent of samples from colonies with symptoms (癥狀).Only five percent of samples from symptomless colonies had it.
Scientists still don’t know whether IAPIV can single--handedly cause the bee decline. They believe that even if the virus is making colonies sick , it could have a partner in crimeIt’s possible, for instance, that insects or chemicals in the environment weaken bees, making them more likely to catch IAPV.
Scientists are still trying to figure out how IAPV came to the United States. The United States currently allows bee products to be imported from Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. If it turns out that this trade is spreading disease, the rules might eventually change.
【小題1】According to the passage ,IAPV is a virus that ______.

A.the virus could also cause other damages
B.there must be something that is the real cause
C.IAPV is not the only cause for the bee decline
D.the virus may be caused by the polluted environment
【小題3】From the third and fourth paragraphs, we know researchers draw their conclusions by means of _______.
A.calculating B.comparingC.examiningD.investigating
【小題4】What still remains unknown to American scientists according to the passage?
A.How and why to kill IAPV.
B.How IAPV came to America.
C.Whether bee products should be imported.

Watch out, Yahoo. There is a search engine out there with super speed and accuracy. It’s very cool.

Google is the Web’s largest search engine. In just two years it has gained a reputation for surprising speed and accuracy, delivering what you are looking for in a second. The site now does this 40 million times a day --- a number achieved without spending a penny on a TV or newspaper ad.

Google doesn’t need them. In the past six months alone, the site has won a Webby (the online version of the Oscar) for technical excellence, set a new record for search engines by indexing a billion Web pages.

Yahoo still has ten times the audience, but Google consistently ranks first in customer satisfaction: 97% of users find what they are looking for most or all of the time. “You see people smile when they use it, like they’ve found something no one else knows about,” says Danny Sullivan, editor of an online newsletter.

No one is smiling more than Larry Page, 27, and Sergey Brin, 26, who seem certain to become billionaires when the company goes public, probably sometime in 2004. they make a great comedy duo(成對的表演者)。When they first met as Ph. D. students, the pair say, they found each other horrible – “I still find him horrible,” adds Brin – but driven together by a computer-science project aimed at coming up with better ways of searching the Web.

The idea behind the Google is that traditional search engines are stupid. They think relevance (關聯(lián)) is based on repetition; if you type in a request for Tiger Woods, say, you’ll get websites listed according to how many times those words appear. Not only is this no guarantee of quality, but it’s also open to abuse. If you own a Tiger fan site and want to lead more people to it, simply type his name thousands of times in the site’s source code(編碼).

C. TV and newspaper ads.        D. Web pages

2. Which of the following win greater customer satisfaction?

A. hold very important positions in Google

B. are two ordinary computer programmers of Google.

C. used to hate each other very much

D. hold quite different opinions of computer-science

4. We can learn from the last paragraph that ___________.

A. Google is open to abuse

B. Google remains a traditional search engine

C. Google thinks relevance is based on repetition

D Google is better than traditional search engines

About 1 million adult New Yorkers are obese(肥胖的), but nearly two-thirds of them don’t think they are, according to a study released on Tuesday by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene(衛(wèi)生).
