June is always a sad time for Senior Three students. After taking the big test, they leave to  31    their dreams in different ways. It’s hard time when students    32  to say goodbye to carefree high school days and close friends.
People always say that teenage friendships are the most precious. Kids are too young to understand real friendship while adults    33  to relate it to fame and wealth.
Things are    34  with high school best friends. We share each other’s secret. We discuss news from all walks of life and begin to    35  our values. We support each other on the journey to the biggest    36   in our lives. We also share success and failure. The seeds of friendship become deeply rooted.
Many of us don’t realize this    37   we enter society. One of my friends, Yang Ping,    38  how strong the bond with high school friends could be. “ It was my high school friend who helped me    get    39  the darkest days in my life,” said the 27-year-old girl.
In 2001 Yang lost her job in Beijing. Yang’s best friend was staying in a college dormitory and took her in. Each night the two girls squeezed into a narrow single bed, chatting and crying. “I’ll never forget her care and encouragement, which supported me out of the darkness,” said Yang.
I    40   remember my last days in Senior 3. At the time, I    41   a 20-page message with my best friend, both of us hoping to keep the friendship    42   forever.
But we didn’t realize we were already deep in each other’s    43   . During the past ten years, whenever I’ve needed help or wanted to pour out my    44  , she has always been there at the other end of a telephone line.
It is true that friends come and go. But never forget the ones who have been there for you. Take a closer look at those now around you, they could be the most precious     45  you discover in your entire life.

先閱讀短文,然后判斷正誤并且討論后面的問題:

sailors race across the seas

  Pre-reading

Imagine that you are sailing on the sea. How would you feel? Then suddenly there came a storm, and the boat was tossed up and down by the waves, how would you feel? Find out whether the sailors feel the same.

STRONG winds drove the angry seas to great heights. Waves of freezing water knocked against the boats, trying to sweep them away. Icy drops of water hurt the sailors' eyes. * Not only did they have to deal with storms, but whales and icebergs too. *

  * Under such hard conditions, most people would have only the most basic of thoughts: survival. But for the 97 people competing in the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), the desire for victory means that speed is constantly (經(jīng)常地)played against safety. *

During the sailing, sailors also regularly record data (資料)that help scientist get oceanic (海洋的 )conditions.“Climbers do the Qomolangma (珠穆朗瑪峰), divers do the deep sea, and sailors do the Whitbread (called the VOR since 2001 - 2002)”, said sailor Paul Cayard during the 1997-98 race.

On September 23, 2001, eight boats left Southampton, England for the first VOR. For nine months, world-class racers battled against each other on the open seas (外海,公海).

Sailors spent weeks at a time driving their boats to the limit--24 hours a day. They had little sleep and no fresh food. When they reached the next pert, the race didn't stop. However, tired sailors did get a chance to rest and prepare for the next part.

After weeks of struggling at sea, the first things these tired men and women wanted were the most basic of human needs.

“The first things are a bottle of beer, followed by some nice fresh food, and then a hot shower,”said one team captain, Katie Pettibone. Everyone was short on sleep, so sleep was also a first choice.“But”, Pettibone said,“it's not al. ways easy to catch up.”

“You can' t fall asleep because your body is still on the working system,”she said. *“It takes a while to get that.”*

Stopovers (中途停留)were up to two and a half weeks long, so most of the crew members had a chance to get some real rest before their hard work began again.

Keeping healthy during the breaks was still important for the racers.“We keep working out to keep our fitness level high,”said Pettibone.

About a week before the start of the next part, they had to start getting ready again. They stored the boat with food, made race plans and tested new sails.

The nine-month race finally finished in Kiel, Germany, in June 2002. After more than 52,000 kilometres, four oceans, nine countries, and I0 ports, the German boat re- turned home as the winner of the first VOR.

  Notes: 1. Southhampton: 南安普頓 (英國城市)

2. Kiel:基爾 (德國北部城市)

True or False

(1)During the race, the conditions are often challenging, so what the sailors think about is safety.

(2)The round-the-world sailing race in 1989-1990 was called VOR.

(3)When they reached the stopovers, every crew member could enjoy a deep and long sleep.

(4)The word“crew”in this story means sailor.

(5)This VOR event began and ended both in Germany.

Houston, Texas (June 8, 2002) --In 2004, the Nation- al Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will send two robots (機(jī)器人) to separate places of Mars to seek out past or present signs of water. It is an exciting idea to send two robots driving over very different places of Mars at the same time; to be able to see what is on the other side of the hill.

Last month, NASA announced it was sending one robot to Mars, but after two weeks, it decided there was enough money for two. The robots will be sent up within two weeks of each other in May and June of 2003 from Kennedy Space Center. If all goes well, the two spacecraft (宇宙飛船) will touch down on Mars, after a seven-and a-half-month space flight, on January 2 and 20, 2004.

The robots, each weighing 160 kilograms, can cover 100 meters per day. They are designed to be able to examine the mineral content of the soil, and their special camera will take pictures of the lands and hills. Although they will be under control from Earth, the robots are able to move more freely compared to those sent up before them.

The actual landing points have not been determined yet, but the scientists say it will be in areas where they hope to find water.

1. According to the news report, scientists plan to send robots up to Mars to

A. find out whether there is water on Mars

B. see if robots can find minerals there

C. test how fast robots can drive there

D. prove that robots can work on Mars

2. How long in between will the two robots be sent to Mars?

A. 1 year.                 B. 7.5 months.

C. 2 months.               D. 2 weeks.

3 One of the important jobs for the robots on Mars is to

A. study the soil

B. walk everywhere

C. test the new camera

D. find a suitable landing point

4. We can infer from the last sentence that scientists

A. have changed the landing points many times

B. hope to land the robots on the surface of water

C. are still working on the plan

D. know where they can find water
