Teenagers are often a difficult group. With all those hormones(荷爾蒙) flooding their bodies, they can be moody, unpredictable, and tend to make uncertain choices. But however confusing their teenage years are, kids can still be generally happy, depending on their lifestyle choices. According to a new research by British scientists, teens who don’t smoke, drink only moderately or not at all, and who don’t eat much junk food are likely to be happier than other teens.

The study looked at 40,000 British families and came up with some interesting findings. For example, kids who never drank alcohol were up to six times more likely to report higher levels of happiness than kids who drank. And teens who smoked were five times less likely to rate high on happiness charts compared to kids who don’t smoke. Same goes for diet and physical activity. The more fruits and vegetables kids eat, and the more hours they spend playing sports, the happier they are.

Now, of course this doesn’t mean that not smoking or drinking, and playing sports guarantees happiness. It could be that kids who have happy character tend to be more active and less addicted to drinking or smoking. And it could equally be the case that kids who are unhappy are more related to drinking and smoking and eating junk food.

Other studies have shown that exercise is a proven way to treat anxiety and depression. Future studies may support the idea that other healthful behaviors, including refraining(克制) from smoking, drinking, and eating too much junk, can avoid sadness and increase happiness, too.

Since I became a full—time freelancer(自由作家), I’ve found one of the hardest things to do is to get up early. Without the danger of being fired, there just hasn’t been a lot of motivation(動機) to get out of bed.

I’ve quickly learned that getting up is the key to success and better yet: waking up early is really just a habit.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you must have strong reasons to get out of bed. Motivation is the only thing keeping us from lying in bed all day.

Writing down all the big and important things you’ll do the next day can give you an extra push in your goal to wake up early and quickly.

Don’t read in bed. Spending as little time as possible in bed will actually help your body realize that the bed is for sleeping, and not for lying awake for hours. The goal of reading in bed is just to help you fall asleep within 10 minutes.

Stress is one of the main causes of poor sleep. Relax yourself before getting into bed. Try controlled breathing exercises or yoga to lower your stress level.

These are just a few ways you can use to wake up earlier. Finding the best way is the most important, and it requires a little work. The key thing is that waking up should be a pleasant experience. If you can make waking up something you are looking forward to, you’re already halfway on your journey toward becoming an early riser.

1.What do we know about the author?

A. He has a full—time job outside.

B. He likes lying in bed all day.

C. He was once fired by a company.

D. He has difficulty getting up early.

2.The author gives us some tips to help us .

A. find the key to success

B. become an early riser

C. fall asleep within 10 minutes

D. relax after a day’s hard work

3.Which of the following is NOT true about doing yoga?

A. It is a good way to reduce stress.

B. It can help you sleep.

C. It can make you worried.

D. It will help you wake up earlier.

4.What is the point of getting up early?

A. Motivation. B. Experience.

C. Success. D. Ability.

We’ve all felt discouragement at one point or another in our lives. However, when this emotion bleeds into other aspects of our life, it can sometimes be inappropriate or even harmful.

I was personally discouraged by an adult during my high school. After telling her what university I wanted to attend, she plainly told me I would not get in. I was completely shocked and angry at her statement. The adult may have not intended to hurt me with her words, but it had an after effect. The meeting made me think she had no belief that I could possibly succeed in the future. After that it caused me to try to avoid any future meeting with adults until absolutely necessary.

We are all human; therefore, we can all understand that some days are more challenging. But when people allow situations of stress to consume(充滿) them, they cannot perform their best. People should pay attention to how their reactions could affect the person they are interacting with. People have the potential to perform their best when they are indulged in the task at hand, but adults who come off in a rude and aggressive way through communication have an effect on teenagers’ mind.

Adults whether in schools, or any other institutions should work to tear down walls gently and create a safe space for the person they are serving. These adults should also help and contribute to a person’s academic, personal and professional growth. High school is an important time when young people need someone to believe in them.

In conclusion, I would like to add that it is not completely up to adults only. Students are responsible for seeking help from adults who are in authority(權(quán)威) positions. They are also responsible for the way they approach adults in their academic surroundings. Students can expect to be treated in a respectful way when they express at the beginning. Generally the responsibility lies on both parties. When both sides can communicate in a polite manner then the complete environment of the school has the potential to develop well.

1.The passage is mainly about ______.

A. the adults’ roles in school

B. the skill to encourage students

C. the way to communicate with children

D. the importance of personal professional growth

2.Who are responsible for children’s development at school according to the writer?

A. Students. B. Teachers.

C. Headmasters. D. Both students and teachers.

3.The underlined phrase probably “are indulged in” means “______”.

A. are weak in B. are amazed at

C. are interested in D. are unbearable with

4.The writer once tried to avoid meetings with adults because ______.

A. he was very busy

B. he thought highly of himself

C. he was once hurt by an adult

D. he couldn’t get high marks at school
