Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will soil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to an outlet that is acceptable in the domestic (馴養(yǎng)的) setting.

One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to train its obedience. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training pens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.

Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here, sit,” it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the pack (群) by using extreme measure. You can teach your dog its subordinate (從屬的) role by teaching it to show submission to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge.

Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.

1.Behavior problems of dogs are believed to _________.

A. occur when they go wild

B. be just part of their nature

C. get worse in modern society

D. become a threat to the community

2.The key to solving dogs’ behavior problems is to _________.

A. teach the dog to perform clever tricks

B. make the dog aware of its owner’s authority

C. enable the dog to regain its normal behavior

D. provide the dog with a pattern accepted by its owner

3.Why do pet dogs love performing tricks for their masters?

A. To avoid being punished.

B. To show their affection for their masters.

C. To win leadership of the dog pack.

D. To show their willingness to obey.

4.When a dog has received effective obedience training, its owner _________.

A. can give the dog more freedom

B. will enjoy a better family life

C. can give the dog more rewards

D. will have more confidence in himself

Last fall, beekeepers from states with warm climates began to report a sudden loss of honey bees.Losses were reported in twentyfour states and spread to Canada.Today, some beekeepers say thirty percent to ninety percent of their honey bees are gone.Food price could go up as a result. And some beekeeping businesses have failed.

Many kinds of plants, trees and grasses need bees to pollinate them.Bees gather nectar from flowers during this process. The liquid gives them food and material to make honey. As the bees land on flowers, their bodies pick up and drop off particles of pollen(花粉).Most flowering plants need pollination to reproduce.

Honey bees can die during the winter. But few dead bees have been found this time.Instead, the bees seem to have disappeared.Experts call the condition “colony collapse disorder”.

Agriculture Department official Caird Rexroad said the colony collapse disorder threatens about fifteen billion dollars worth of the country's farm economy.Mr.Rexroad commented at a hearing of a House of Representatives agriculture subcommittee.

Mr.Rexroad said the cause of the sudden loss of bees was not clear. The number of honey bees had already fallen before the colony collapse disorder began.

Experts say the varroa mite is at least partly responsible for the earlier decrease in honey bees. The mite is a tiny creature that feeds on honey bees.It may play a part in colony collapse disorder by carrying bee viruses.Or the problem may be caused by other disease and weather conditions.

Diana CoxFoster of Pennsylvania State University is part of the scientific group.Ms.CoxFoster says the nation needs honey bees that can defend themselves better against disease and insects. The recent mapping of most of the honey bees' genes offers the hope of a stronger honey bee some day.

1.Some people have failed in beekeeping businesses because ________.

A.they want to make more money by doing something else

B.the climates were too warm to raise bees last fall

C.too many bees have disappeared for no reason

D.more and more people are beginning to raise bees

A.It is normal that some bees die in the cold season.

B.The plants can't live without bees at all.

C.Many bees have died because of the bad weather.

D.Researchers have found the reason of the death of bees.

3.The passage is mainly to tell us that ________.

C. Love should be your rule.

D. Be grateful and feel hopeful about life.

E. Life can be cruel at times.

F. Be open to life anyway.

Dear Seth,

You‘re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can‘t read, much less understand what I‘m going to try to tell you in this letter. But I‘ve been thinking a lot about the life that you have ahead of you, about my life so far as I reflect on what I‘ve learned, and about my role as a dad in trying to prepare you for the trials that you will face in the coming years. As with my advice, take it with a grain of salt. What works for me might not work for you. But someday when you‘re ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.

1._____________________________

You are young, and life has yet to take its toll on you, to throw disappointments and heartaches and loneliness and struggles and pain into your path. You have not been worn down yet by longs hours of thankless work, by the slings and arrows of everyday life. For this, be thankful. You are at a wonderful stage of life. You have many wonderful stages of life still to come even if they are not without their costs and great dangers.

2.____________________________

There will be people in your life who won‘t be very nice because you‘re different, or for no good reason. There‘s not much you can do except to learn to deal with them, and learn to choose friends who are kind to you, actually care about you, and make you feel good about yourself. There will be times when you are met with disappointment rather than success. Life won‘t always turn out the way you want. But instead of letting these things get you down, push on. Learn to turn negatives into positives. You‘ll also face heartbreak and abandonment by those you love. I hope you don‘t have to face this too much, but it happens. Let these pains become stepping stones to better things in life and learn to use them to make you stronger.

3. _____________________________

Yes, you‘ll find suffering in your journey through life, but don‘t let that close you to new things or wall yourself off. Be open to new things, experiences and people. You might get your heart broken ten times but find the most wonderful woman the 11th time. You might get teased and hurt by people you meet. If you close yourself off to new people, who will be there during the toughest times of your life and create some of the best times of your life. You will fail many times but if you allow that to stop you from trying, you will miss out on the amazing feeling of success once you reach new heights with your accomplishments.

4. _____________________________

You will meet many people who will try to outdo you in school, in college, at work. They‘ll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, cooler gadgets. To them, life is a competition — they have to do better than their peers to be happy. Here‘s a secret: Life isn‘t a competition. It‘s a journey. If you spend that journey always trying to impress other, to outdo others, you‘re wasting it. Instead, learn to enjoy the journey. Make it a journey of happiness, of constant learning, of continual improvement, of love. Find your passion, and pursue it doggedly. Life is too short to settle for a job that pays the bills.

5._____________________________

If there‘s a single word you should live your life by, it should be this: Love. It, I know, might sound corny, but trust me, there‘s no better rule in life. Some would live by the rule of success. Their lives will be stressful, unhappy and shallow. Others would live by the rule of selfishness. They will live lonely and unhappy lives. Live your life by the rule of love. Love your spouse, children, parents, friends, with all of your heart. Love not only your loved ones, but your neighbours, coworkers, strangers, even your enemy. And most of all, love yourself. While others criticize you, learn not to be so hard on yourself, to think that you‘re ugly or dumb or unworthy of love. Instead, learn to love yourself for who you are.

Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are starting out on a weird, scary, daunting, but ultimately incredibly wonderful journey. And I will be there for you when I can.

Love, Your Dad

New research shows that the healthy brain may hold memories which we don’t even remember. In The Journal of Neuroscience, experts report that the brain might hold more memories than people realize, but that restoring those memories can be tricky.

Memory Check

First, participants saw a list of 120 real words mixed with 80 nonsense words. Next, they saw another word list and tried to remember which words had been on the first list. Meanwhile, their brains were scanned with functional magnetic resonance(核磁共振) imaging.

While participants reviewed the second word list, their brain scans showed more activity in a certain brain area -- the posterior(后部的) median temporal lobe(腦葉) -- when they saw words that had been on the first word list.

But participants didn’t always remember that they’d seen those words before. Sometimes, they goofed and said they hadn’t seen those words before. In other words, the posterior median temporal lobe was more sensitive to memory than participants’ consciousness, the researchers note.

“Album”of Memories

Another part of the median temporal lobe also attracted the scientists’ attention. The anterior(前面的)median temporal lobe showed more activity when participants thought they were seeing a new word, the study shows.

So, why did participants sometimes mess up their memory recall? It might be that two parts of their brain -- the posterior and anterior median temporal lobes -- might be dueling(決斗) for the upper hand in deciding what actually happened in the past, the study notes.

In other words, memories might have a photo album in the brain, but sometimes we forget what’s on all of the photo album’s pages.

1.A person sometimes has difficulty recalling because .

A. he is unconscious when he gets his memories

B. he forgets what is on the pages of the photo album

C. there are two parts in his brain dueling for the upper advantage

D. the anterior median temporal lobe is more active than the posterior

2.According to the passage the researchers are .

A. studying how a person remembers things

B. studying a magazine The Journal of Neuroscience

C. examining posterior and anterior median temporal lobes

D. doing experiments to find out what disturbs a person’s memory

3.What did the experts discover when the participants saw the words on the first word list appear on the second word list?

A. The instrument worked faster.

B. The participants were more conscious.

C. The posterior median temporal lobe was more active.

D. The anterior median temporal lobe was more active.

4. The underlined wordgoofedin the fourth paragraph means .

A. made a mess of B. made an answer for
