French surgeons have performed what they said on Wednesday was the world's first partial face transplant--- giving a new nose, chin and lips to a woman attacked by a dog.
Specialists from two French hospitals carried out the operation on a 38-year-old woman on Sunday in the northern city of Amiens by taking the face from a brain-dead woman, who had hanged herself just hours before the operation. Her family agreed on the operation.
“The patient is in an excellent state and the transplant looks normal,” the hospitals said in a brief statement after waiting three days to announce the pioneering surgery.
The woman had been left without a nose and lips after the dog attacked her last May, and was unable to talk or chew properly. Such injuries are “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to repair using normal surgical techniques, the statement said.
The statement did not say what the woman would look like when she had fully recovered, but medical experts said she was unlikely to resemble the woman who had been the source of her new face.
The operation was led by Jean-Michel Dubernard, a specialist from a hospital in Lyon who has also carried out hand transplants,
Skin transplants have long been used to treat burns and other injuries, but operations around the mouth and nose have been considered very difficult because of the area's high sensitivity to foreign tissue.
Teams in France, the United States and Britain had been developing techniques to make face transplants a reality
There was a short-term risk for the patient if blood vessels became blocked, a medium-term danger of her body rejecting the new skin and a long-term possibility that the drugs used could cause cancers.
Experts say that although such medical advances should be celebrated, the transplant had thrown up moral(道德的)and ethical(倫理的)issues. Little is known about the psychological effect of the transplant.

Long ago, near the village of Hedley, there lived a strange and playful trickster(騙子), known as the Hedley Kow. Sometimes it looked like an ordinary object. Sometimes it looked like a donkey or a goat.
One evening, as an old woman went along the path, she saw an old iron pot lying in the ditch. “Fancy that.”she said. “Nobody seems to want this old pot. I will take it home and plant pretty flowers in it.”
When she tried to lift it, she saw that it was full of gold pieces. “Well, now, if that doesn’t beat all,” she said. “I’m rich! I can buy a fine house and fancy cloths.”
The pot was heavy, so she tied her shawl around it and began to drag it home. After a while, she stopped to rest. When she looked in the pot, she was amazed to see that it was full of silver pieces!
“Oh, my!” she said. “Aren’t I the lucky one! If it were gold, thieves would have been after me. My friends might have been jealous. But I can hide these silver pieces, take out a few at a time, and live like a queen.”
On she went, pulling the pot after her. She was nearing home now. At her gate, she looked into the pot. What a surprise! The silver had changed into a lump(塊)of iron. “Iron,” she said. “Well, now! No one will be jealous or want to steal this from me. I can use this iron to prop open my door and let in fresh air and sunlight. Lucky me!”
As soon as she said that, the pot began to grow and later it became a goat. Then it jumped up and ran off down the road laughing.
“Fancy that!” said the old woman. “I believe I have seen the Hedley kow! Not many folks can say that, and that’s a fact. I’ll just sit up by my fire tonight thinking about how lucky. I was to see it for myself. I truly must be the luckiest person in the world!”

The reading skills of young male students may improve more when huts are tutored (輔導(dǎo)) by women, a Canadian study shows, contradicting some school policies to hire male teachers to improve boys' literacy.
Herb Katz, an education professor at the University of Alberta, took 175 boys in the third and fourth grades, identified as struggling readers, and paired them with a research assistant who worked on their reading skills for 30 minutes a week over 10 weeks.
On average, the boys paired with female tutors felt better about their reading skills after the 10 weeks than those who were guided by a male research assistant, the study found.
Katz said the study, published in the US journal Sex Roles, may cause educational policy - makers in countries such as Australia and Britain to rethink policies that call for more male teachers to be hired to provide role models for boys whose reading skills fall behind their peers (同齡人). "It tells us that the way governments respond with policy is perhaps a little too quick and a little too simple," Katz said." Boys and girls enter kindergarten with similar reading skills, Katz said, but by the end of the third grade, boys have lower reading scores than girls. The reasons behind that difference are not entirely clear. "I don't know that reading skills fade so much as teachers may not recognize what boys are doing," he said. "We don't really know a lot about boys, even in those early years."
The boys involved in the study attended 12 schools in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Most were from downtown neighborhoods. About a third were native Canadians and 55 percent came from ethnic minority groups.
60. What's the purpose of this passage?
A. To encourage boys to do more reading.             B. To persuade schools to hire female teachers.

A. They have difficulty in reading.           B. They take no interest in reading.
C. They come from different Canadian cities.   D. They have no female teachers at school.

A. women must be better al teaching than men
B. girls do more reading than boys
C. male teachers are preferred to help reading- troubled boys in Australia

Researchers Look Behind the Tears to Study Crying
Many people found themselves unusually moved by the historic presidential inauguration(就職演說)last week in Washington Watching the huge crowds,we saw laughter,cheers,hugs-but also many tears
It made us wonder, why dopeople cry?Surely tears must be good for us—away to calm the mind and cleanse the body.Yet studies show that crying sometimes makes people feel worse.
Three researchers in Florida and the Netherlands recently looked more deeply into the subject. They examined detailed descriptions ofcrying experiences.Psychologist Jonathan Rottenberg at the University of South Florida says they wanted to study crying as it happens in everyday life, not in a laboratory.
The team analyzed information from the Intemational Study on Adult Crying. As part of that study, three thousand people in different countries, mostly college students, wrote about recent crying experiences. They noted causes, surroundings and any people involved in the event. They also reported how they felt after they cried.
Professor Roaenberg says the research showed that all crying experiences are not created equal. Crying does not always make a person feel better,he says.About ten percent of people reported feeling worse after they cried.
But a third felt better after crying. And a majority reported the experience as helpful.
The research showed that people who cry alone may not do as well as those with others around. People who reached out for emotional support at the time-and received it-reported better results from the crying experience.
But Professor Rottenberg says those who felt shame or embarrassment while crying were less likely to report that crying had been helpful.
Research has shown that women cry more of ten and more intensely than men.But it may not be to better effect, says the psychologist. The new findings,he says, did not show that a person’s sex was an advantage of beneficial crying. In other words, just because women cry more does not mean they are more likely to have a“good”cry.
The paper entitled”Is Crying Beneficial?”appeared in December in Current Directions in Psychological Scieflce And there is more to learn.Jonathan Rottenberg says the science ofcrying is still in its infancy.
57·Why did the author mention the presidential inauguration in Washington in the first paragraph?
A.Because he was impressed by the laughter, cheers, hugs and tears.
B.Because he wanted to introduce the topic about crying.
C.Because he wanted to show people’s dissatisfaction with the result.
D.Because it was the historic moment that many people cried
58.How did the researchers carry out the research?
A.They studied crying experiences not only in everyday life but also in labs.
B.They collected the crying experiences of the students at the colleges.
C They studied the crying experiences of grown-ups from various countries.
D.They noted their own crying experiencesand compared with others.
59.We can learn from the passage that_______.
A.it may be better to cry alone than with others around
B.some support from others may make crying helpful
C.women who cry more of ten may have better effects than men
D.the effects will be better if you feel shy while crying
