Though X City may not be as well-known for public transportation as some other cities in the country, it does offer buses, the light rail, the subway and taxis to make life without a vehicle possible.
If you’re a college student, there’s an additional resource available -- the X City’s Network. Started in 1999, the Network is essentially funded by the schools, but about 17 percent comes through fundraising. Around 70,000 riders a year use the Network, which runs for the duration of the academic year. Stops are at the various campuses as well as the Town Center, the Inner Harbor, the railway station and the City Square.
Students from seven schools like and use the network. Not only is it free and they know exactly what to expect, but also it's a safe ride.
If you’ve got a bicycle and are in the mood for some exercise, you can take advantage of several bicycle paths throughout the city. The two main paths are the G Falls path and the J Falls path. The G Falls path starts at Lily Park. The J Falls path runs from Daffodil Park to the railway station, passing by several historic attractions.
If you don’t have the patience to wait for the buses or the light rail, or don’t want to have to make several transfers, then you might want to take a taxi. Cabs run up and down the main streets and can be easily found at the Inner Harbor or other such centers of activity. If you’re a little bit out of the way, though, you will probably have to call one of the several cab companies and have them send a cab to your location.
Staying in town, neighborhoods all have multiple transportation services if you don’t have a car. You can make various choices to do shopping, to the movies, to baseball games, to museums, to the malls and even to work. So, even if you don’t have a car here, that shouldn’t prevent you from moving easily.

The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said humorously, “England and America are two nations divided by a common language. If he were writing today, he might add ‘divided by a common technology--- e-mail’”.
Two completely different styles of e-mail have formed on either side of the Atlantic-Euromail and Amerimail. Americail is informal and chatty. It’s likely to begin with a “Hi” and end with a “Bye”. The chances of Amerimail containing a smiley face or an “xoxo” are disturbingly high. We Americans are unwilling to dive into the meat of an e-mail. We feel we have to first inform recipients (收信人) about our vacation on the island which was really excellent except the jellyfish were biting and the kids caught a cold, so we had to skip the whale watching trip, but about that investors’ meeting in New York. Amerimail is a bundle of contradictions, casual and yet direct, respectful yet over proud. In other words, Amerimail is America.
Euromail is stiff and cold often beginning with a formal “Dear Mr. X” and ending with a simple “Sincerely”. You won’t find any mention of kids or the weather or jellyfish in Euromail. It’s all business. It’s also slow. Your correspondent might take days even weeks to answer a message. Euromail is exactly like the Europeans themselves.
Recently about 100 managers were asked on both sides of the Atlantic whether they noticed differences in e-mail styles. Most said yes. Here are a few of their observations:
“Americans tend to write (e-mail) exactly as they speak.”
“Why don’t you just call me instead of writing five e-mails back and forth?”
“Europeans are less interested in checking e-mail”.
“In general, Americans are much more responsive to e-mail—they respond faster and provide more information.”
So which is better, Euromail or Amerimail? I realized it’s not popular these days to suggest we have anything to learn from Europeans, but I’m fed up with an inbox filled with casual, barely meaningful e-mails from friends and colleagues. If the alternative is a few earnestly written, carefully worded bits of Euromail, then I say, “Bring it on.”
What did George Bernard Shaw mean by saying “England and America are two nations divided by a common language”?
A. There is not much difference between British English and American English.
B. Both England and America speak the common language, so they are much the same.
C. Either England or America is a divided nation, though they share a common language.
D. There is sharp difference between England and America despite their common language.
Which of the following is most likely to be the “meat” of an Amerimail?
A. The jellyfish were biting.
B. We had an excellent vacation on the island.
C. We had to skip the whale watching trip.
D. We were to attend the investors’ meeting in New York.
On receiving an e-mail, Europeans tend to __________.
A. respond to it immediately and earnestly
B. take more time than Americans to respond to it
C. respond by calling up their correspondent
D. never respond to it all
What are characteristics of Amerimail?
A. Informal and chatty B. Casual and indirect
C. Stiff and cold D. Formal and direc60
We can conclude from the passage that __________.
A. the different e-mail styles do much harm to the relationship between the two sides on Atlantic
B. Amerimail is more appreciated by the writer for being informative and casually written
C. Euromail always impresses the writer as something more pleasant to read
D. the writer doesn’t favor either e-mail style as both have their own shortcomings

Surgical teams accidentally leave clamps, sponges and other tools inside about 1,500 patients nationwide each year.
The mistakes largely result not from surgeon tiredness, but from the stress arising from emergencies or complications(并發(fā)癥) discovered on the operating table, the researchers reported.
The study found that emergency operations are nine times more likely to lead to such mistakes, and operating–room complications requiring a change in procedure are four times more likely.
It also happens more often to fat patients, simply because there is more room inside them to lose equipment, according to the study.
Two–thirds of the mistakes happened even though the equipment was counted before and after the procedure, in keeping with the standard practice.
Most lost objects were sponges, but also included were metal clamps and electrodes(電極). In two cases, 11–inch retractors (牽引器) metal strips were forgotten inside patients. In another operation, four sponges were left inside someone. When there is significant bleeding and a sponge is placed in a patient, it can sometimes look indistinguishable from the tissue around it.
The lost objects usually lay around the abdomen (腹腔) or hips but sometimes in the chest. They often caused tears or infections. Most patients needed additional surgery to remove the object. In other cases, patients even sensed nothing about the object, and it turned up in later surgery for other problems.
To prevent such mistakes from happening, Loyola University Medical Center is becoming one of the first hospitals in the country to use sponges outfitted with bar codes. The new system was brought to Loyola through the efforts of the hospital’s operating room nurses.
Another effective way is to X–ray patients after surgery to reduce the likelihood of objects being left inside patients.
1.In which of the following situations are objects most likely to be left inside a patient?
A.The nurses are counting the equipment and the patient is being X–rayed.
B.The surgeons are doing the last operation of the day, and everyone is exhausted.
C.unexpected happens and some changes must be made in the procedure.
D.A complex operation is going on according to the plan made by many experts.
2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Such mistakes happen more often to fat patients.
B.1,500 patients suffer from the mistake all over the world every year.
C.X–ray examination can help to find the lost objects.
D.The mistake largely results from stress rather than tiredness.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Surgical teams aren’t to blame for the mistakes.
B.Some people never know there is something left inside their body.
C.Most mistakes happen because equipment isn’t counted after the procedure.
D.Only some small objects may be left inside the patients.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Never Trust Anyone B.A Mistake in the Operating Room
C.Carelessness and Mistakes D.Tips for Patient Safety
