B

Our eating habits(習慣) are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice-cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite(食欲). It is important for us to eat our meals at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges(法官) used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not eat the bread, it showed that he was telling lies. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed a very good way of finding out the fact. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in eating anything dry. Because he is worrying, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.

The key to reaching or staying at a healthy weight is regular exercise and good eating habits. Teens should get 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day. Note the word “activity”. As long as you’re getting your body moving, it doesn’t have to mean doing complicated exercises or going to the gym (體育館) every day. All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including aerobic (有氧健身法的) strength building, and flexibility (柔韌性) exercise. Make exercise a habit by scheduling some every day.

On days when you have soccer practice or an aerobics class, you may have no trouble exercising for an hour or more. But most of us are busy, and 60 minutes a day of activity seems like a lot of time. The good news is that it’s OK to divide it into shorter “exercise breaks” throughout the day. Just as you might have a healthy snack to stop yourself getting hungry, exercise snacks can keep energy level high. So get up 15 minutes earlier and do some yoga or other stretching (伸展) activity. Fast walk or jog (慢跑) for 15 minutes at lunch. Do the same thing after school ??????????or walk or bike home. Add to that taking the stairs, gym class, and walking between classes during the day, and you’ve probably reached your 60 minutes.

Here are 5 simple ways to make an exercise lifestyle change:

1. Start today. Go outside for a walk.

2. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

3. Instead of driving, walk or bike to places like school or a friend’s house.

4. Clean your room or wash the car.

5. Limit your time watching TV, using the computer, or playing video games--and when you do play, try some games that get you moving.

The underlined phrase “exercise snacks” in the second paragraph probably means ________.

A. food eaten before exercise

B. food eaten during exercise

C. shorter “exercise breaks”

D. a new kind of exercise

Why should we have exercise snacks every day?

A .Because they can stop us getting hungry

B. Because they can keep energy level high

C. Because they can include many kinds of sports

D. Because they are more likely to relate to our daily life

Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. To go hiking on your holidays

B. To spend less time on computer games

C. To go to school on foot or by bike

D. To do some housework at home

What will be most probably discussed in the following paragraph?

A. Losing weight   B. Good eating habits   C. Exercising your brain  D. Outdoors exercise

What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Regular exercise    B. School exercise    C. Indoors exercise    D. Difficult exercises

Televisions, stereos, telephones, and computers have changed the way we spend our time and what we know about the world. Some of the changes brought about by these material possessions have improved our way of life, but others have made it worse. Our young teenagers turn on the television, play the stereo, play games on the computer, talk on the telephone, and eat all the same time. This drives me right up the wall to instant insanity(精神失常).

However, teens of today place too great an importance on material property. They spend an average of several hours a day watching television, listening to stereos, playing on the computer, playing video games, and talking on the telephone. Families no longer watch television together and there is great lack of communication. Materialism is evident when an otherwise intelligent teenager drives their parents crazy, and into debt, when misusing communication equipment. Teens judge and admire other teens for what they own and have, rather than for what they are or what they can do. They no longer care about values, like honesty, integrity(正直), freedom, talent, quality and other values and morals.

However, good or bad, communication devices are here to stay. It is up to us, as parents, to stop our beloved teenagers from misusing and abusing our communication equipment and devices. We need to avoid the problems they present and to make the most of their opportunities they possess and hold for us all.

1.The writer’s attitude toward the modern material possessions is generally _____.

A.positive

B.negative

C.neutral

D.indifferent

2.According to the writer, teens’ overuse of communication equipment can do harm to _____.

A.their own health

B.their own study

C.their own morality

D.their neighbors’ life

3.The writer attributes (歸咎) the unsatisfactory behavior of teens to _____.

A.teens’ too much free time

B.parents’ non-interference

C.inadequate school education

D.material property

4.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer seems to be most annoyed at ______.

A.a(chǎn)ll the modern material possession

B.eating while talking on the phone

C.the decline in teens’ morality

D.a(chǎn)ll the communication equipment

(A)

Chocolate might lower your chances of having a heart problem. According to a new study, a new study, a small amount of chocolate every day could decrease the risk of having a heart attack, by nearly 40 percent, German researchers followed nearly 20,000 people over eight years, sending them several questionnaires about their diet and exercise habits. They found people who had an an average of six grams of chocolate a day—or about one square of a chocolate bar—had a 39 percent lower risk of a heart attack.

Previous studies have suggested dark chocolate in small amounts could be good for you, but this is the first study to track its effects over such a long period. Experts think the flavonols(黃酮醇)contained in chocolate are responsible. Flavonols, also found in vegetables and red wine, help the muscles in blood vessels(血管)widen, which leads to a drop in blood pressure. “It’s a bit too early to come up with recommendations that people should eat more chocolate, but if people replace sugar or high-fat snacks with a little piece of dark chocolate, that might help,” said Brian Buijsse, a doctor at the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, Germany, the study’s lead author.

The people tracked by Buijsse and colleagues had no history of heart problems, had similar habits for risk factors like smoking and exercise, and did not vary widely in their Body Mass Index(身體質量指數(shù)).

Since the study only observed people and did not give them chocolate directly to test what its effects were, experts said more research was needed to determine the candy’s exact impact on the body. Doctors also warned that eating large amounts of chocolate could lead to weight gain. “This is not a prescription(指示)to eat more chocolate,” said Robert Eckel, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado who is not linked to the study. “If we all had (a small amount of)chocolate every day for the rest of our lives, we would all gain a few pounds.” Eckel said it was amazing to find such a small amount of chocolate could have such a protective effect, but that more studies were needed to confirm its conclusions.

1.What is the main purpose of the article?

A.To suggest people eat as much dark chocolate as possible.

B.To warn people not to eat too much chocolate.

C.To tell people how to avoid a heart attack.

D.To report on a study about the benefits of chocolate.

2.Both Buijsse and Eckel believe that        .

A.dark chocolate in enough amounts could be good for our health

B.eating large amounts of chocolate could lead to weight gain

C.we can cure our heart problems with dark chocolate

D.we’d better not advise people to eat more chocolate at present

A.It’s the first time that the effects of dark chocolate has been examined.

B.The researchers followed nearly 20,000 people for over eight years.

C.The researchers didn’t give any diet instructions to the people followed by the study.

D.The study found that eating about six grams of chocolate a day was beneficial.

4.We can infer from the text that         .

A.eating a small amount of dark chocolate will lower your blood pressure

B.scientists are now certain of the effects of dark chocolate

C.eating a little chocolate over a long period will not lead to weight gain
