Slowly I climbed into the driver’s seat of the old brown Pontiac.“Hi, Miss Caroline!” cried the three passengers, my friend Annie and her two children. No, I’m not Annie’s driver.I’m just a friend.

Let me explain.I’m 68, retired and live alone.Annie’s 27, works as a part-time bank teller and is married with two kids. We’re different, but we have one very important need in common--a car.I couldn’t afford to fix my own car and the bus didn’t go everywhere I needed to go.

A friend had a suggestion.“My daughter Annie’s been using my old Pontiac while her husband job-hunts,” he said, “He got laid off and I know they could use help with gas.Maybe you two could share the car.”

Share a car? We Americans are pretty territorial about our automobiles.Still, need overrode(壓倒)nervousness and I gave Annie a call.We quickly worked out a schedule.Three days a week for me, the rest for her.

Having wheels again was a huge help.Soon the car brought something more.Driving each other home on the days we switched, Annie and I talked about everything.

She had plenty of worries.Besides her finances, her dad’s health was failing. However, she lifted my spirits! She once said, “Life doesn’t always turn out the way I want, but I trust things will work out.And they do.Just like this car!”

Annie and her family moved to Los Angeles.I still borrow the Pontiac from her dad, who is healthy once again. Now, whenever I drive the car, I think about Annie, and about how a simple exchange born of economic need can become such a blessing.Like Annie says, life doesn’t always turn out the way we want. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t turn out good.

A few years ago, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, where I was employed. purchased Norand Corporation. Pioneer's sales representatives in the field used Norand hand-held terminals to upload daily sales information and download new price and sales incentive information. Pioneer bought so many of these hand-held-terminals, the economies made the purchase of Norand look interesting. Owning Norand also allowed Pioneer to explore high-technology markets outside agriculture.
But after a few years, the emerging laptop PC technology made the hand-held units obsolete (已廢棄的). Pioneer sold Norand at a loss. Pioneer always took a given percent of the annual profits to divide equally among all employees, so our profit-sharing checks were lower than if Pioneer had not purchased Norand. Additionally, my Pioneer stock was lower than it had been before the purchase of Norand. I was not pleased.
The CEO of Pioneer, Tom Urban, made annual formal visits to each of the Pioneer divisions to talk about the state of the business and to listen to employees' concerns. When he walked into the meeting room for his first visit after the sale of Norand, he acknowledged the group, remove his jacket, and neatly folded it across the back of the chair. He loosened his tie, undid his collar and rolled up his sleeves. The next thing he said was the last thing I ever expected to hear a CEO say.
He said, "I made a mistake buying Norand and I am sorry. I am sorry your profit-sharing was lower because of the purchase, and I am sorry your stock was hurt by the purchase. I will continue to take risks, but I am a bit smarter now, and I will work harder for you."
A great man and leader stood before us that day. As I sat listening to him, I knew I could trust him, and that he deserved every bit of loyalty I could give to him and to Pioneer. I also knew I could take risks in my own job.
In the brief moment of silence before the questions started, I recall thinking that follow him into any battle.
【小題1】All of the following are the results brought by Pioneer's purchase of Norand except     .

A.Pioneer can explore high-technology markets outside agriculture
B.Pioneer's sales representatives can upload information using Norand hand-held terminals
C.some of Norand's employees joined the Pioneer
D.it later led to the lower of profit-sharing checks of Pioneer's original employees
【小題2】The underlined sentence in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to       .
A.the next thing he said was what I expected least to hear a CEO say
B.the next thing he said was the last thing I heard from a CEO
C.the next thing he said was what I expected most to hear a CEO say
D.the next thing he said was what I heard from the last CEO
【小題3】Why did Tom Urban remove his jacket, loosen his tie, undo his collar and roll up his sleeves before he spoke?
A.He felt hot in the room.
B.He wanted to look cool by doing this.
C.He was too excited.
D.He wanted to be close and frank with his employees.
【小題4】What did the employees feel after Tom Urban apologized to them?
A.They felt he was a stupid CEO.
B.They felt he did not deserve their loyalty
C.They felt he was more trustworthy.
D.They didn't want to take risks with him.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015屆河南靈寶第三高級(jí)中學(xué)高一下期第三次質(zhì)量檢測(cè)英語(yǔ)卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Dear Editor,

I have just returned home after studying for a year in Germany. But it seems that my parents don’t understand me now. They expect me to be the same person I was before I went abroad, but I’m not! Why can’t they let me be myself?

Jimmy

Hi, Jimmy,

As far as I know, people who have lived abroad often find that the adjustment (調(diào)整) to returning home is more difficult than their adjustment to living in a foreign culture. Why? We expect to have some problems when we go to a new place, speak a different language and learn the rules of a different culture ... But home? ... we know that place!

Your parents expect that the same person who boarded the airplane one year ago will be returning. Especially if they have never been abroad themselves, your parents probably won’t understand the changes that living abroad can cause in a person. On the other hand, you may have maintained (保持) an ideal mental image of your loved ones while abroad, an image that is broken into pieces when you return.

Remember you have been living a different lifestyle in your host country, and you have probably become very independent while staying there alone. Now that you’re home, you will be expected to conform (順應(yīng)) again to the lifestyle of your family. As a result, you may be upset about your parents’ involvement in your life.

Communication is the key to overcoming this problem. Tell your parents how you are feeling. Share with them information about cultural re-entry(重歸), and ask them to be patient. This does not mean that you have to forget your experience and give up everything you’ve learned! Learn to find a balance between the old and new, just as you did when first adjusting to your host country’s culture.

1.What is Jimmy’s main purpose in writing the letter?

A.To criticize his parents.

B.To ask for advice about his studies.

C.To complain about his parents.

D.To ask for help.

2.What does the editor think of Jimmy’s problem?

A.It’s unusual.      B.It’s normal.       C.It’s serious.       D.It’s interesting.

3.The editor thinks that both Jimmy and his parents ______.

A.have changed in the past year

B.have unrealistic expectations of each other

C.need to behave like they did before

D.need to find a balance between the good and bad

4.The author suggests that ______ would help solve Jimmy’s problem.

A.patience and trust

B.patience and politeness

C.better communication between family members

D.a(chǎn) deeper understanding of the host country’s culture
