Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 percent of what we really mean while words only express 7 percent. So, while your mouth is closed, your body is just saying.
Arms. How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone upsets you, just cross your arms to show you’re unhappy!
Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you are a monitor in class, you can also take on this position when you want your words to be taken seriously. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little.
Legs. Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!
Posture (姿勢(shì)). A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you normally don’t sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing more difficult, which can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.
Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse(噘嘴) your lips. You might also use this position to hold back an angry comment you don’t wish to show. However, it will probably still be noticed, and people will know you’re not pleased.
Face. When you lie, you might put on a false face. But that expression would crack briefly, allowing displays of true emotions such as happiness, sadness, disgust (厭惡) and fear to come through.
1.When someone is keeping his arms behind his back, he tries to tell you that ________.
A. he is angryB. he is outgoing
C. he is coolD. he is not afraid
2.If you want to appear confident, you should ________.

D. move your arms a lot
3.Which of the following movements shows someone is nervous?
A. Not sitting straight with the shoulders inwards.
B. Moving around a lot more than normal.
C. Keeping the arms to the sides of the body.
D. Having the lips pursed to hold back an angry comment.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Body language can express more meanings than words do in communication.
B. It’s not polite to use body language in formal communication.
C. Different people in different countries must have the same understanding of the same body movement.

We live in central Phoenix, near the canal. Every day I used to see a homeless old man and his scruffy little dog hanging out down there.
I would tell my husband we should give him food for the little dog. It wouldn't have been a problem; we have our own "mini farm" of animals! But he would say "OK!" and then blow the idea off because of our business.
Being in Phoenix, Arizona, you can just imagine how hot it gets here, but his winter was really chilly! I had just come from KFC with take-out food for dinner. As I was turning by the canal, the man and his dog were sitting right there all bundled up. Even the doggy had a coat on! Not even thinking about it, I pulled into the parking lot along the canal and piled up a plate of chicken with all the fixings for the man and his little buddy. I gave it to him with a soda and a bottle of water for the little dog. He said, "Thank you, sweetie. You are an angel." And there were tears welling up in his eyes! I told him he was so welcome, and then went home.
When my husband dug into the KFC gag, he asked, "Were you hungry, or what?" I told him what I did and he said, "Only you!" Then he told me I had done a good thing.
A few weeks later, we were walking along the canal and found the man walking to me, with his little dog. He asked whether I would mind adopting the dog. With tears in eyes, he said it had gotten too hard for him to care for the dog. He added that he was planning on heading to Washington State but his dog wouldn't have been up to it, so he hoped to give it to me. "Only you! In this city, you are the only person I can believe in!"
Now, every time I watch and pat the puppy lying near the fireplace, I will recall the old man's words and wish him good luck.

A. Grateful.B. Indifferent.C. Delighted.D. Disappointed.

B. Because he believed that his dog liked the author.

5.What can we infer from the ending of the passage?

As a young adult, Noah Webster was a teacher. At this time, the colonies were fighting for independence from Britain. Yet the books that American children used in school all came from Britain. The books were all about British people and British places. Webster wanted books that would mean more to American children. So he wrote three books that used American examples — a grammar book, a spelling book, and a reader. These books were very popular, and millions of them were sold.
Webster was interested in changing the spellings of words. He wanted words to be spelled the way they were pronounced. For example, he thought the word “head” should be spelled “hed”, and the word “l(fā)augh” should be spelled “l(fā)af”. People liked Webster’s suggestions.
However, few words were actually changed. One group of words that were changed were words in which an unpronounced “u” followed an “o”. That is why Americans write “color” and “l(fā)abor”, and the British write “colour” and “l(fā)abour”.
With the money he made from his books, Webster was able to write. It was the first American English dictionary, published in 1828. Webster’s dictionary had over 70000 words and gave the meaning and origin of each. To this day, Webster’s work is the example that most dictionaries of American English follow.
1.Which of the following statements is right?
A. Noah Webster had to borrow books from Britain when he was a student.
B. Noah Webster had his own government when he was very young.
C. When Noah Webster taught at schools, he wrote some story books.
D. As a teacher, Noah Webster wasn’t satisfied with the books he used.
2.The third paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. Webster spoke English in a different way
B. American people didn’t write English as exactly as English people did
C. Webster was good at correcting mistakes in textbooks
D. American people didn’t like speaking English
3.In American history, Noah Webster is famous for ________.
A. his teaching methods
B. his dictionary
C. his fighting for freedom
D. learning foreign languages
4.The last sentence of this passage means ________.
A. most dictionaries in the world are the copies of Webster’s
B. most dictionaries in American English have the characteristics of Webster’s
C. most American people followed Webster’s advice on writing
D. Webster’s dictionary is the only one used in the United States

The time may soon come when we say goodbye to most of the world’s languages. Today humans express themselves in over 6,000 different languages. But that is quickly changing. Many scientists say that over half of these languages will disappear within the next 50 years. After 100 years, the languages used in the world will not be more than 20.
Why? It is because people from different cultures live and work together much more often than before. This brings changes. The languages of the world’s main culture are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures. Most international trade takes place in world languages such as English. People respect their own cultures and traditions, but when it comes to getting a job, knowing a world language is often necessary. It may mean the difference between success and failure.
Technology works on the change of languages in an even more amazing way. Modern media such as radio and television give young people in developing countries much knowledge about the world. But this knowledge doesn’t come in words from the mouths of their parents or the elders in their neighborhood. It usually comes in the language of a different culture.
People in different cultures think it good for them to share a popular language. They can quickly share ideas and work together. Knowing the same language means easier communication and is a basis for trust.
Is the death of a small local language such a terrible thing? The answer is maybe. Many cultures may have words for many useful things we know nothing about. If their languages die, their valuable wisdom may be lost forever. The future of the world’s language depends on our actions now. Will we protect endangered languages or allow them to quietly disappear?
Time will have the last word.
1.Scientists say that within 50 years, perhaps, there will be only ________ languages in the world.
A. 4,000B. over 3,000C. no more than 20D. around 3,000
2.The passage says that if all the people in the world knew a major world language, ________.
A. radio and television would all use the language
B. it would be easier for them to share their ideas
C. lessons at schools would be taught in the language
D. people would respect their own culture more
3.Also, the passage says that if nobody spoke the languages of smaller cultures, ________.
A. knowledge would come from the mouths of the elders
B. many of the words for things we do not know would be lost
C. people would have difficulty in working together
D. there would be no smaller cultures
4.By saying “Time will have the last word,” the writer means “________”.
A. let us wait and see
B. we have time to do something
C. it is too late to do anything
D. it is only a problem of time
