China's higher education is developing very fast. The number of college students are quite small in the 1980s, now nearly fourteen million students are studying in colleges and universities.
Why does China's higher education develop such quickly? Several factors contribute to it. First of all, its quick development results China's rapid socially and economic development.Through the reform and opening up, people have become richer and have much money to invest in education. Secondly, our government had attached great importance to higher education and taken out practical measures to encourage people to go to college. Beside, with the development of society, more and more people hope to receiving higher education.
【答案】①are→was②and→but③such→so④results后加from⑤socially→social⑥much→more⑦h(yuǎn)ad→has⑧taken out去掉out⑨Beside→Besides⑩receiving→receive
【解析】①The number of+復(fù)數(shù)名詞表示……的數(shù)量,謂語(yǔ)用單數(shù)。再結(jié)合in the 1980s所以用一般過(guò)去時(shí), 故把a(bǔ)re----was 。
②The number of college students are quite small in the 1980s, 和后面的句子now nearly fourteen million students are studying in colleges and universities.明顯是轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系,故把a(bǔ)nd---but。
③such quickly中such不能修飾副詞,只能改為so.
④固定搭配:result from由……引起的,故在results后面加from。
⑤socially and economic development. 中socially and economic都是用來(lái)修飾名詞development,所以此處用了副詞socially是錯(cuò)誤的,故把socially---social。
⑥people have become richer and have much money to invest in education 由語(yǔ)境和richer,可知后面應(yīng)該是說(shuō)更多的錢(qián)投入教育。故把much----more。
⑦our government had attached great importance to higher education過(guò)去完成時(shí)表示的是過(guò)去的過(guò)去,此處根本沒(méi)有提示在過(guò)去的,結(jié)合語(yǔ)境可知應(yīng)該表示我們政府已經(jīng)更重視高等教育。用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí),故把had----has.
⑧taken out practical measures to encourage people to go to college.固定搭配: take measures to do sth取措施做某事,故刪去out.
⑨beside在……旁邊”、“在……附近” besides除...以外, 還有.由語(yǔ)境可知:除...以外, 還有,故把beside-----besides
⑩more and more people hope to receiving higher education.固定結(jié)構(gòu):hope to do sth 希望做某事; 故把 receiving---- receive

Scientists investigated why Ebola virus is so deadly when it spreads from animals to humans and then from human-to-human contact. The research team looked at the Zaire Ebola virus in an animal system to understand how it gains strength. This virus is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa. They found that initially the animal systems were not affected by the virus, but succeeding transmission(傳送) into other animals caused the virus to “hot up” and become more severe.
The team analyzed the viruses at different stages and were able to identify several changes in its genetic material that were associated with increased disease.
Professor Julian Hiscox, who led the study from the University's Institute of Infection and Global Health, explains: “The work tells us that the evolutionary goal of Ebola virus is to become more fatal.”
“We were able to show through genetic analysis which parts of the virus are involved in this process. The information we have gathered will now allow us to monitor for such changes in an outbreak as well as develop future treatment strategies.”
Professor Roger Hewson, leading the study from Public Health England, Porton Down, said: “Ebola virus is such a destructive infection to the people affected by the disease and the economy of West Africa.”
“Our understanding of Ebola virus biology is way behind that of other viruses and our cooperation shows how we can bring together our specialists' skills to close this knowledge gap.”
Professor Miles Carroll, a co-author of the work, said: “This study has allowed the team to be at the forefront of developing methodologies to analyze patient samples recently taken by the European Mobile Laboratory from West Africa to understand disease evolution during the current outbreak.”

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

D.want to be happy
(2)It can be inferred (推斷) from the story that rich people like to ________.
A.live outside New York City

C.his neighbor's name
D.not a good name
(4)According to the writer, it is ________ to keep up with the Joneses.

Nowadays more and more Chinese go to work with bicycle, leaving their cars at home. Why are so many people riding bicycles to work? They have different reason for it.
First, bicycles do not use up any fuel. Therefore, they cost less than other means of transport. Besides, bicycles do not need many space on the road, and it is easily to find a place for it. And everybody knows that riding a bicycle is healthy sport. When people drive their cars to work or shop, they lost the chance to exercise, but the waste gas from the cars will pollute the air. And moreover, people feel annoying when looking for a parking lot in the busy city center. So I prefer riding a bicycle to drive a car.
We are looking forward to a cleaner and better environment by changing our life style.

【題目】閱讀理解
The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.
One such example is the word matter. In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.
Let's get to the heart of the matter —a matter of principle(原則).
If someone says that you owe(欠) him $50, but you don't, a friend might say, “Well, you could pay him the $50. It's not that much money. Then you won't have to hear him say it anymore. But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It's a matter of principle.
There is another way to use the word matter. But be careful with your choice of words.
If you ask someone, “What's the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What's the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude (粗魯?shù)?. In fact, when you say, “What's the matter with you?” you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.
Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it.
Let's say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesn't matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.
But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn't matter to me.” does not sound rude. In this situation, “it doesn't matter” shows you are easy-going(隨和的).
No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it's only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter.
