If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about speed, or rate of reading?

Some people who read very rapidly may say, “I am a rapid reader. I can read an entire book in one evening. ”Someone who reads slowly may say, “I read slowly, but I know what I read. I don’t miss a thing. ”

The rapid reader may be a good reader when he reads a story book for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may read so rapidly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which it is important to remember.

The very slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may take altogether too much time to read a simple story that is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.

So you see neither the reader who reads everything rapidly nor the one who reads everything slowly is really a good reader.

If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about rate, or speed of reading.

1. Knowing why you are reading and what you are reading to find out will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

2. Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something; science and history books, which are full of importance. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.

3. Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment; news, letters from friend’s items or bits of news from local or home town papers, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.

4. In some of your reading, you must change your speed fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas, which must be remembered.

1. Is a slow reader or a rapid reader really a good reader according to this passage?

A. A slow reader B.A rapid reader.

C. Both.                        D. Neither.

2. How fast should you read?

A. Rapidly.                      B. Slowly.

C. It depends on what we are reading.      D. 200 words a minute.

3. What should be read slowly?

A. Something full of important information.

B. Newspapers and magazines.

C. Letters.

D. Novels.

4. What should be read rapidly?

A. Directions for making something.

B. Text book.

C. Science and history books.

D. Story books, newspapers, letters and so on.

5. What is the important rule you should keep in mind about speed of reading?

A. Read as fast as possible.

B. Fit your speed to your needs.

C. Read as slowly as possible.

D. Keep a speed at 200 words a minute.

Chess-playing machines were a common feature at the 19th century carnivals(狂歡節(jié)) .They would take on all competitors and usually wan, but they were all frauds(騙局)with human beings concealed inside.

Two centuries later, the “machine” is real.

A computer programmer Deep Fritz held world champion, Vladimir Kramnik, to a 4-4 tie. In doing so, Kramnik felt just short of avenging (復(fù)仇)the 1997 defeat of his predecessor Garry Kasparov at the hands of IBM's Deep Blue.

Deep Fritz is a commercially available product produced by Germany's Chessbase Gmbh. In this match it was running on 8,900 Mhz processors and could analyze 3 million positions a second.

Kramnk admitted he found the match exhausting. “ I need some time to recover. ”he said comparing the match with his 2000 defeat of Kasparov. “The pressure is similar but preparing against a computer is much more difficult. It has all the knowledge and you have to be prepared for all openings. With a human, you know that certain openings don't suit his style and won't happen, but not with a computer. ”

“The games themselves were different,” he said, “Against a computer, you have a feeling that if you make one mistake, it's over. So it's like going through a minefield. You're always watching for tactics, even in a quiet position.”

He also said that computers play faster. “The game has a different rhythm and it puts more pressure on you.”

“The main problem, ”he said, “is that you can never understand its logic. In a human sense, it has no logic. With a human opponent, you feel him and you know what path he will take.”

Chess enthusiasts have been arguing for centuries whether it's an art, a science, a sport or something else.

Kramnik doesn't see the emergence of computers making any difference to this argument. “Chess is very wide. It's not merely these things but a small model of the world. ”

Next spring, Kramnik is scheduled to defend his title as Einstein Classical Chess World Champion against Peter Leko of Hungary. While he welcomes a rematch against Fritz, it's not certain when it will take place.

1.The difficulties of competing with the computer doesn't lie in that ________.

[ ]

2.The underlined word “exhausing” ( in Para. 5 ) means ________.

[ ]

A.making something interesting

B.making someone excited

C.making someone tired

D.making something endless

3.Put the following events in the right order:

(1) Garry Kasparov was defeated by Deep Blue .

(2)Chess-playing machines were not real.

( 3 ) After competing with Deep Fritz, Kramnik felt exhausted .

(4)Kramnik's competition with Peter Leko of Hungary.

[ ]

A.(2)-(4)-(1)-(3)

B.(2)-(1)-(3)-(4)

C.(2)-(3)-(4)-(1)

D.(1)-(A)-(3)-(2)

4.What did Kramnik think of the chess?

[ ]

A.It became more and more difficult after the chess-playing machines were invented.

B.Chess is an art, a science, a sport, etc.

C.It's more and more popular, with the computer developing.

D.Chess is a small world which is wide.
