On a winter day, it rained heavily. While I was walking from the library at the end of my 31 break, a man was walking towards me with two huge 32 of brochures.

I thought, “What 33 is that man trying to do? Carrying all those things?” Then all of a sudden he 34 them all! What a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the 35 in front of me! “Oh, no,” I thought. The man 36 his head helplessly in the rain and started trying to 37 all of the brochures up. I couldn’t believe how many people walked 38 as if nothing had happened.

I thought, “I am not going to be one of those people who don’t 39 this man.” I wondered what I would 40 people to react if I were that man. So, 41 it was the end of my lunch time from work and I would be 42 if I stopped to help him, I didn’t mind. If I 43 what happened, I was sure my 44 wouldn’t mind too much. So, I helped him gather them all. Then I asked if he would like a 45 carrying a box to where he went. He said yes gratefully.

I carried one of the boxes. The box I had to carry was very 46 —as I’m quite a short and thin girl—but I didn’t 47 . We got there and he thanked me very much for helping him 48 . He also gave me one of these brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.

What is a more 49 way to spend some time than helping someone else when you can? Luckily, I wasn’t that late back to work, so nobody even 50 it at all!

If women are mercilessly exploited (剝削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame, because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion. They are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with primary things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They’re only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t sometime in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of instability (不穩(wěn)定) ? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanged styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

Designers and big stores always make money     _  .

A.by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

B.because they are capable of predicting new fashions

C.by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothing

D.because they always improve quality of women’s clothing

The writer would be less critical (批評) if fashion designers placed more stress on the      ________of clothing.

      A.cost   B.a(chǎn)ppearance       C.comfort    D.suitability

According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.

B.The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of character.

C.The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.

D.Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women.

By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious”, the writer means that ________.

A.women’s changeableness in their choice of clothing is often laughed at

B.women are better able to put up with discomfort

C.men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers

D.men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion

Looking for some inspiration or the “write” kind of ideas for your creative stories? To start with, some writers describe winter by using their five senses or their imagination. Others write on their favorite winter activity. Whatever you choose to write about, working on a winter story can always help to improve your writing skills. Now read the following story and see if it helps get rid of any icy writing block you’ ve been struggling with.

A Winter Adventure

Beep, beep. Beep-beep: the alarm clock rang. Slowly, I got out of warm bed down onto the wooden floor which the winter had thrown its cold upon. The bitter cold temperature penetrated   (穿透)my socks and I hurried to put my feet in shoes.

Looking out of the window, I watched the white snow, soft and thick, drop onto rooftops and trees. Half an hour later, finishing the last of my hot chocolate, I prepared to enter the adventure that waited for me outside. I buttoned my jacket and fastened my boots. Hat on, I opened the door and was greeted by the winter coldness.

In the depths of winter, the early morning did not have the rush of the rest of the year. Most of my neighbours were put off by the cold, and stayed in bed until the sun had climbed higher into the sky.

Unseen by those who remained locked inside their homes, warm in their beds, I enjoyed being alone with the beauty of the wintertime. Those indoors were unable to appreciate the snow-scapes, ice crystals, frost and the crisp(清新的)breeze. For them, the coming of winter meant just the arrival of the cold.

Appreciation depends on contrasts. One cannot love the warmth of April if one has not known the freezing cold of winter. Later that year, the heat of the sun on my skin would be all the more wonderful for my memories of that cold morning and others like it.

C.To inspire readers to take more exercise in winter
