My father’s friend Henry used to be a teacher at a medical school and he was very strict to his students. The students were afraid of him though he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. Once a student seated before him, and Henry required him to describe a certain illness, his description of them turned out to be OK. Then Henry asked about the cure for the illness, but the student gave the right answer. “How much will you give the patient?” “A full spoon!” Suddenly the student realizes that there was anything wrong. He said anxiously, “I’ve made the mistake; a full spoon is too many, and he can take only five drops.” “It’s too late; your patient has been died.” Henry said coldly.
1.to→with
2.though→because/as/since
3.student后加was
4.them→which
5.but→and
6.realizes→realized
7. anything→ something
8.the→a
9.many→much
10.has后been去掉
根據(jù)短語(yǔ)be strict with sb. 故to改為with。
兩句之間是因果關(guān)系,所以用because/as/for引導(dǎo)原因狀語(yǔ)從句,而though引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句。故though改為because/as/since。
故student后加was。
故them改為which。
故but改為and。
故the改為a。
故many改為much。
故has后been去掉。

My sister and I were taught at a very early age to write thank-you letters for birthday and Christmas gifts. We carefully copied addresses from our mom’s address book into our own pretty little books, and a new box of stationery(信箋,信封)was always among my gifts under the tree. We wrote our letters on December 26 at the latest every year. It was an important tradition in our home, and it has turned me into an avid(熱情)thank-you-letter writer as an adult.
I still send a great deal of personal mail, and I am extremely interested in all of the trappings of letter writing: unique stamps, beautiful stationery, fountain pens(自來(lái)水筆). I feel a mad rush of satisfaction sticking a stamp on a carefully penned thank-you letter and sending it off in the mail.
Several years ago, I even sent my mom a thank-you letter to thank her for teaching me to count my blessings on paper. Sending letters of thanks out into the world has made me more grateful for the love, support and kindness I receive daily.
My father died when I was twenty-seven. Even then, I found comfort in writing letters of thanks for the gifts of words I received. At a time when all I wanted to do was retreat(退縮)into my own sadness, the act of giving thanks forced me to stay connected to the world and to the lives of the living.
And while it may seem unimportant, my belief in well-written thank-you letters has protected my popularity. Since real thank-you letters are extremely few and far between, my social graces(風(fēng)度)are considered as a charming difference from other people, and my friends and family always seem truly moved by my efforts.
【1】What can we learn about the author’s family?
A.Her family liked to collect stationery.
B.Her family had a thank-you-letter writing tradition.
C.She often copied addresses for her mother.
D.They wrote thank-you letters on Dec 26.
【2】How did the author feel when writing thank-you letters?
A.Satisfied.B.Tired.C.Excited.D.Bored.
【3】What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A.The author felt happy to receive gifts from others.
B.The author’s father died when she was very young.
C.Writing thank-you letters made the author lead an active life.
D.Writing thank-you letters forced the author to talk with others.
【4】What does the author intend to tell us?
A.Expressing thanks can protect what we have.
B.Receiving thank-you letters is truly moving.
C.Writing thank-you letters is difficult work.
D.Being grateful can help gain the respect.

Do you remember your first day of school? Were you excited or a bit scared? When I started school, I lived in an area of southern Germany. I remember how frightened I was, mostly because I didn’t know what to expect.
My mother and I walked quietly, downhill into the center of town. When we entered the classroom, I noticed all the children were sitting quietly in their seats. Anxiously, I picked a spot next to a friendly-looking girl.
In my nervousness, I had totally forgotten I was to receive a Schultuete (school cone) on the first day of school, but as I looked at my teacher's desk I remembered. Her desk was covered with huge cardboard cones. I knew that my mother had filled my Schultuete with goodies and brought it to my classroom the day before, but I didn't know which one was mine.
That morning, the focus of my attention remained with those cones. All of the fear slowly disappeared. When the teacher asked me to approach the desk, she did not seem threatening at all. When she smilingly handed me my Schultuete, I was the happiest girl.
Proudly, I carried my gift home. The hill did not seem steep at all. Hurriedly, I unwrapped my Schultuete and discovered candies, chocolates, and oranges. This day stayed in my mind as one of the sweetest in my life.
When I was older I asked my mother about her first day of school. She told me she hadn't received a Schultuete from her parents because the custom had not been established all over Germany at that time.
The custom began in the cities in the 1800s and then spread to the towns and villages. By the early 1950s, the tradition of the Schultuete was established all over the country. And it has been passed on even in the present day.
【1】How did the author feel at first about her first day of school?
A.ExcitedB.Confused
C.AfraidD.Delighted
【2】According to the text, a Schultuete _____.
A.is given to kids as a gift on their first day of school
B.is presented as a reward by a school teacher
C.became popular in the early 19th century
D.is usually filled with school supplies
【3】The underlined sentence “The hill did not seem steep at all” implies that ____.
A.the author was in good healthB.the author was very excited then
C.the author enjoyed climbing hillsD.the author missed her mother badly
