Silence is unnatural to map. He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between be does all he can to make a noise in the world, and be fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If be is introduced to another person, and is number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards him self as a failure ,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest headed chatterbox(喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety nine percent fo human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure(蠟塑人像).

The aim of conversation is not. For the most part, to communicate ideas ; it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admirted, different qualitics. of buzz;there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made bu a mosquito(蚊子).But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, forlunately,is pleasnnt to the ear,and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take pert in the buzzing with his neighbors.

Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content it they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time. they just prove themselves to be successful conversationists.

(1)

According to the author, people make conversation to

[ ]

A.

exchange ideas

B.

prove their value

C.

achieve success in life

D.

overcome their fear of sllence

(2)

By “the buzzing of a fly”(Para1),the author means “________”.

[ ]

A.

the noise of an insect

B.

a low whispering sound

C.

meaningless talks

D.

the voice of a chatterbox

(3)

According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors.

[ ]

A.

about whatever they have prepared

B.

about whatever they want do

C.

in the hope of learning something new

D.

in the hope of getting on well

(4)

What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?

[ ]

A.

To discuss why people like talking about weather.

B.

To encourage people to join in conversations.

C.

To persuade people to stop making noises.

D.

To explain why people keep talking.

At a certain time in our lives we consider every place as the possible sites(地點(diǎn)) for a house. I have thus searched the country within a dozen miles of where I live. In imagination I have bought all the farms, one after another, and I knew their prices.

The nearest thing that I came to actual ownership was when I bought the Hollowell place. But before the owner completed the sale with me, his wife changed her mind and wished to keep it, and he offered me additional dollars to return the farm to him. However, I let him keep the additional dollars and sold him the farm for just what I gave for it.

The real attractiong of the Hollowell farm to me were its position, being about two miles from the village, half a mile from the nearest neighbor, bounded(相鄰) on one side by the river, and separated from the highway by a wide field. The poor condition fo the house and fences showed that it hadn’t been used for some time. I remembered from my earliest trip up the river that the house used to be hidden behind a forest area, and I was in a hurry to buy it before the owner finished getting out some rocks, cutting down the apples trees, and clearing away some young trees which had grown up in the fields. I wanted to buy it before he made any more of his improvements. But it turned out as I have said.

I was not really troubled by the loss. I had always had a garden, but I don’t thing I was ready for a large farm. I believe that as long as possible it is better to live free and uncommitted (無(wú)牽掛的). It makes but little difference whether you own a farm or not.

What do we know about the author?

   A. He wanted to buy the oldest farm near where he lived.

   B. He made a study of many farms before buying.

   C. He made money by buying and selling farms.

   D. He had the money to buy the best farm in the country.

Why did the author decide to buy the Hollowell place?

   A. It was of good market value.

   B. It was next to the highway.

   C. It was in a good position.

   D. It was behind a nice garden.

Why did the author want to buy the farm in a hurry?

   A. He was afraid the owner might changes his mind.

Most young architects―particularly those in big cities― can only dream about working in a building of their own. And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his parter, Brain Bell. Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts film in Atlanta. Form the outside, it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting(生銹的)walls.

In 2000, Yocum and Bell found this building in the city’s West End. Built in 1947, the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right, so Yocum bought it. He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition(排除), pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do, and “to treasure what was there― the walls, the rust, the light.” Yocum said. “Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It’s like an art installation(裝置) in there―a slow-motion show.”

Since the back building hade been constructed without windows, an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back fo the building is a working area and a living room for Yocum and his wife. A sort of buffer(緩沖) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom, a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allpw views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.

Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work. It has also given these architers a chance to show how they can make more out of less.

60. According to the passage, it is _______ for most young architects in big cities to work in a

   Building of their own.

   C. it was located in the city center

   D. it looked attractive from the outside

62. Working on the old building, Yocum and Bell _______.

   A. pulled rubbish out through the roof

   B. removed the skylights from the bathroom

   C. presentd a slow-motion show in an art gallery

   D. built a kitchen at the back part of the old buiding

63. It can be inferred from the passage that Yocum and Bell _____.

   A. benefited a lot from pulling down the roof

   B. turned more old buildings into art galleries

   C. got inspiration from decorating their old building

   D. paid more attention to the outside of the art gallery

64. The main idea of the passage is that ______.

   A. people can learn a lot from their failures.

   B. it is worthwhile to spend money on an old building

   C. people should not judge things by their appearance

   D. creative people can make the best of what they have
