Experts have put forward detailed plans for a tunnel to join Taiwan with the Chinese mainland．
The shortest proposed route would be 126 kilometers―more than twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel．And the longest proposed route would be 207 kilometers．
A recent conference in xiamen，F(xiàn)ujian Province brought together more than 70 experts．The event was co一sponsored(共同發(fā)起)by universities from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland．Fujian is the province where both proposed mutes would begin．
There is no direct passenger access(通道)between the mainland and Taiwan by air or sea at the moment．
Experts say that it is better to start research sooner rather than later，although there is a lack of government funding(資金)．There are no technical problems t0 build a Taiwan tunnel．But it will require an improved political relationship across the Straits．
A professor of TsinghHa University said，“A special feature of huge projects is that the period of preparation is longer than the period of construction．”
For example，he said，the English channel Tunnel took 14 years of planning and had been discussed for two centuries．And preparations for the huge Three Corges(三峽)dam on the Yangze River began in the 1950s．
The xiamen conference focused on the longest southern route，which would use the Taiwan-controlled islands of Jinmen and Penghu as steppingstones.
The first stage of the new project could be a bridge to cross the five kilometers between Xiamen and Jinmen．This would mean that traveling from Xiamen to Jinmen by car would only take five minutes．
The longest tunnel now being planned anywhere in the world is the 54-kilometer land tunnel to link Lyon in France with Turin in Italy．The tunnel will not be completed until 2015-2020．

Wong Fuk-wing(黃福榮), a Hong Kong volunteer（志愿者）at an orphanage（孤兒院）in Yushu, was killed in the earthquake when he was trying to save others on April 14, 2010.
Wong managed to run safely out of the building with some children when the first quake happened at 7:50 am on April 14, but he went back inside to rescue three other children and three teachers inside, although he knew the danger of aftershocks（余震）.
At 10 am, all the children and one of the teachers were saved. However, Wong was buried under the fallen building and died. The other two teachers were still waiting to be rescued.
46-year-old Wong was a truck driver, who often said he could only give his efforts to charity（慈善）instead of money, as he did not earn a lot. His tragic（悲劇的）end touched the hearts of many people both in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
Wong began volunteering in 2002. In 2003, Wong was told by the doctor he got serious illness, which gave him a great blow. However, the illness did not deter the warm-hearted man. When the earthquake struck Wenchuan is Sichuan Province in 2008, Wong rushed to the disaster area of Shifang to offer his help though his family did not want him to go.
In fact, Qinghai is a place Wong had often visited since 2006. As a volunteer, he gave out medicine and clothing to the orphanage there. No one could expect that Wong would die helping others.
Hong Kong Chief Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen said he had “the highest respect” for the hero who gave his life for others. “What he did has shown the Hong Kong spirit.” The citizens of Hong Kong called him “ the pride of Hong Kong’s people” and people on the mainland have also praised him as “ a true hero”.

Chang plans to go on to get a master’s degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies.
A journalism graduate student, surnamed Lin, at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since “there will be better career prospects now that more Taiwanese companies are going there”. “They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations,” said Yang Ching-yao, professor of the Chinese mainland studies. As he was leaving, he told his friends that he wouldn’t come back.
Several years later, Cheng and Wang built a successful school, New Dream, from the ashes of Cheng’s misfortune(his girlfriend got a visa too, and Cheng lost his university teaching job) and Wang’s ability to connect with students often through Hollywood movies. In America, Meng suffered a lot. Disappointed, he went home and joined his friends at New Dream. Later, the three friends’ relationship became worsened, but finally was improved under the weight of their common goals.
