“Linda, if beating yourself up were an Olympic sport, you’d win a gold medal!”
Annabel, my close friend, stunned me with that frank observation after I told her how I had mishandled a situation with a student in a third-grade class where I was substituting. “I should never have let him go to the boy’s room without a pass! It was my fault he got into trouble with the hall monitor! I’m so stupid!”
My friend burst out laughing, and then made her “Olympic” comment. After a brief period of reflection I had to admit that she was right. I did put myself down an awful lot. Why, just during the previous day I had called myself “a slob” for having some papers spread out on my desk, “ugly” when I left the house without makeup and “an idiot” when I left the house for an emergency substitute job without my emergency lesson plan.
In a more reflective tone, Annabel said, “I once took a workshop at church where the woman in charge had us list all the mean things we say about ourselves.”
“How many did you have on your list?” I asked.
“Fifteen,” she confessed. “But then the teacher said, ‘Now turn to the person next to you and say all the items on your list as if you were speaking to that person!’ ”
My jaw dropped. “What did you do?”
“Nothing. Nobody did. We all just sat there, until I said, ‘I could never say these things to anyone else!’ ”
“And our teacher replied, ‘Well, if you can’t say them to anyone else, then don’t ever say them to yourself!’ ”
My friend had a point. I would never insult a child of God---and I’m God’s child, too!
God, today let me be as kind to myself as I would be to another of Your children.
【小題1】 What does Annabel mean by the first sentence of the passage?

A.The writer is a good athlete.B.The writer scolds herself too much.
C.She is encouraging the writer. D.A gold medal is not a big deal.
【小題2】 What does the writer intends to tell us through the second and third paragraphs?
A.She has low self-esteem over some small things.
B.She often makes serious mistakes in daily life.
C.She is a third-grade teacher.
D.She cares too much about her appearance.
【小題3】 We can infer that the underlined word “slob” might be _____.
A.something untidyB.someone dangerous
C.something dirtyD.someone lazy
【小題4】 What does the writer mean by the last sentence of the passage?
A.She is ready to turn to God for help.
B.She will be kind to all children.
C.She won’t insult herself as well as others.
D.She is willing to be a child of God.

I lost my sight when I was four by falling off a box car in a freight(貨物)yard in Atlantic City. Now I am thirty two. I can slightly remember what color red is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a disaster can do strange things to people. I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind. I don’t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate the more what I had left.

Life, I believe, asks constant adjustments to reality. The adjustment is never easy. I was totally confused and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me—a potential to live, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.

The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. If I hadn’t been able to do that, I would have become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself, I mean: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the intricate(錯(cuò)綜復(fù)雜的) pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.

It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. Once a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was making fun of me and I was hurt. “I can’t use this.” I said. “Take it with you,” he urged me, “and roll it around.” The words stuck in my head. “Roll it around!” By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. At Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind I invented a new kind of baseball. We called it ground ball.

All my life I have set a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good trying for something that I knew at the start was out of reach. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.

1.We can learn from the beginning of the passage that _______

A. the author lost his sight because of a car crash.

B. the author wouldn’t love life if the disaster didn’t happen.

C. the disaster made the author appreciate what he had.

D. the disaster strengthened the author’s desire to see.

2.What’s the most difficult thing for the author?

A. How to adjust himself to reality.

B. Building up assurance that he can find his place in life.

C. Learning to manage his life alone.

D. How to invent a new kind of baseball.

3.According to the context, “a chair rocker on the front porch” in paragraph 3 means that the author _________.

A. would sit in a rocking chair and enjoy his life.

B. would be unable to move and stay in a rocking chair.

C. would lose his will to struggle against difficulties.

D. would sit in a chair and stay at home.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. A Miserable Life                           B. Struggle Against Difficulties

C. A Disaster Makes a Strong Person          D. An Unforgettable Experience

The advertisement appeared in my e-mail—“1-800-Flowers: Mother’s Day Madness —for just $39.99!” I almost clicked on it, forgetting that those services would not be needed this year. My mother, Margaret Feiddman, died at the age of 89, and so this is my first Mother’s Day without my mom.

In my childhood, my mom appeared to be a typical suburban housewife of her generation. She sewed many of my sisters’ clothes, including both of their wedding dresses and boy’s suits for me. And on the side, she won several national bridge tournaments(橋牌錦標(biāo)賽).

My mom left many indelible marks on me. The first was to never lose heart and to be independent. My dad died suddenly when I was 19. My mom worked hard for a couple of years. But in1975, I won a scholarship to study in Britain and my mom surprised us all by announcing that she decided to go with me. When I met difficulties, she always said: “You’re a man, so never lose heart, never be knocked down, and try your best to pursue(追求) your dreams.”

My mom’s other big influence on me is a sense of optimism. She had taken her knocks. But every time life knocked her down, she got up and kept on marching forward, encouraged by the saying that pessimists(悲觀者) are usually right, optimists are usually wrong, but most great changes are made by optimists.

How I wish to listen to my mother’s words, and give my best regards on this Mother’s Day, but I have no chance now! My best friends, treasure(珍惜)your mother’s love!

A.show he’s tired of the advertisements

B.explain he missed his mother very much

A.That she volunteered to go to Britain with her son.

B.That she gained knowledge all by herself.

C.That she did all the housework by herself.

3.What dose the underlined word “indelible” in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?

A.be out of control                        B.be easy to remember

C.be destroyed easily                      D.be impossible to forget

4.We can know about the author’s mother that_____.

D.she passed away before the author’s father

5.Which can be the best title for the passage?
