Sam, an unemployed piano tuner, said it was only the second thing he had ever won in his life. The first thing was an Afghan blanket at a church raffle(抽獎(jiǎng)) when he was 25 years old.But this was much bigger: it was $120,000! He had won the Big Cube, a state lottery(彩票) game.To win, a contestant must first guess which number a spinning cube will stop on.The cube has six numbers on it: 1X, 10X, 50X, 100X, 500X, and 1000X.If he is correct, the contestant must then guess which of two selected variables(變量) is going to be greater. So, just guessing which number appears on the cube does not guarantee that you will win any money.
Sam correctly guessed 1000X, but he still had to choose between two variables. One variable was the number of cars that would run the stop sign at Hill Street and Lake Avenue in six hours. The other variable was the number of times that a teenage boy would change TV channels in a three-hour period. This was a tough decision.
Finally, Sam flipped a coin.It came up heads, so Sam picked the teenager. He picked right. The stop sign was run only 76 times, but the teen clicked 120 times.Sixty-year-old Sam jumped for joy, for he had just won 1000 times 120, or $120,000.Sam dreamily left the lottery studio.Talking excitedly on his cell phone while crossing the street, he got hit by a little sports car.
Sam is slowly getting better. He was in the hospital for a month. His hospital bill was $110,000.And the insurance company for the little sports car’s owner sued(起訴)Sam for $9,000 worth of repairs. Also, Sam still has to pay federal taxes on his winnings.Sam doesn’t play the state lottery any more.He says it’s better to be unlucky.
56.What can be inferred about Sam from the passage?

Ever since farmers began to grow grain, they have had to protect their crops from birds. In the 1300's, English farmers hired children to protect their crops. They were called “bird scares”. The children chased birds and threw stones at them.
Bird scares were replaced in the 1800's by scarecrows. A scarecrow is anything that is set in a field to scare birds away. Often it is a pole dressed like a person. Some farms with small fields still use scarecrows today.
Farming became big business in the twentieth century. Scarecrows could no longer protect the huge fields of grain, so farmers used poisonous chemicals on the fields. The poison made the grain bitter. The birds usually would not eat the bitter grain.
Although they can prevent crops from being destroyed by insects and birds, some chemicals can be harmful to humans. Therefore, farmers are using fewer chemicals now than they did twenty years ago. Perhaps scarecrows may be seen more often in the fields in the future.

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform.
What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity(職業(yè)身份) than to step out of uniform?
Primary among the argument against uniforms in their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think ,speak, and act similarly on the job at least. Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes, Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain , requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with types of civilian clothes.
60  People are likely to think that a man in uniform_________.
A.  suggests quality work
B.  shows his social position
C.  appears to be more practical
D.  looks more fresh and attractive
61 Those who are against uniforms believe that people wearing uniforms_________.
A.  are usually helpful                B.  have little freedom
C.  lose personal character             D.  enjoy greater popularity
62  It can be concluded from the passage that_________.
A.  people generally trust a person in uniform
B.people enjoy wearing comfortable uniform
C.the cost of the uniform is acceptable to people
D.people wear uniforms to show their professions
63  The underlined sentence tells us that_________.
A.  it’s impossible that people can be recognized more easily by their uniforms
B.people’s identity can be recognized more easily by their uniforms
C.nurses and policemen must wear uniforms when working
D.people in those professions act in an easier way without uniforms

The $586 billion economic stimulus(刺激)package that China announced on Sunday may not be quite as large as it seemed at first sight, but it shows just how seriously the authorities in Beijing take the threat of a slowdown following the international financial crisis. On the face of it, the package of tax cuts, higher public spending, and easier credit makes up the largest such stimulus in history.
The new policy gives President Hu Jintao something to show fellow world leaders at the Group of 20 summit in Washington on Saturday as they seek ways out of the financial crisis.
“We must carry out the measures to ensure fast and stable economic development ,” Premier Wen Jiabao told government leaders on Monday. “They are not only for the needs of our own development but also our biggest contribution to the world.”
At first, stock markets(股市) jumped on news of the package, in the hope that if China’s economy continues to grow, it might help other nations go through the expected global decline in economy by offering a market for their exports.
The stimulus package is designed to reduce the effects of falling exports  on China’s own economy, encouraging investment (投資)and consumption (消費(fèi))at home. That, the government says, should keep the world’s fastest-growing economy on a “steady and relatively fast” growth track despite the depressing international climate.
The State Council(國(guó)務(wù)院),China’s cabinet, said it would target spending over the next two years on low-income housing, rural construction, water and electricity supplies, technological innovation(創(chuàng)新),and recovery from disasters such as the May 12 earthquake. If the plan is carried out, its focus on projects benefiting China’s poorer citizens, rather than on traditional large-scale industrial development, will strengthen the government’s policy of building a “harmonious society” that bridges the present gap between the rich and the poor.
72. China’s economic stimulus package  ______ .
A. shows its serious attitude towards the international financial crisis
B. has stimulated the world’s economy greatly
C. mainly focuses on higher public spending
D. is as large as it seemed at first sight
73. According to Wen jiabao, China’s measures will ______.
A. make the world’s economy grow faster
B. ensure fast economic and cultural development in China
C. be only needed for China’s own development
D. be its biggest contribution to the world
74. How can the new policy reduce the effects of falling exports on China’s own economy? ______
A. By keeping China’s economy one of the world’s fastest growing ones.
B. By making China’s economy the fastest growing one in the world.
C. By encouraging investment and consumption at home.
D. By getting rid of the depressing international climate.
75. What’s the final aim of the new policy? ______
A. To build traditional large-scale industries.
B. To reconstruct the earthquake-hit area.
C. To build a harmonious society throughout China.
D. To provide housing for low-income people.
