An old gentleman who lives a few doors away from me can always be seen with a bag. He goes out by himself and picks up plastic bottles, plastic bags and pieces of paper everywhere. He does it all carefully and never complains.
The children in the nearby school are probably responsible for some of that litter(廢棄物). “There will come a time when they know better ,” he said . “ It’s just not yet . So, I’ll do it for them.”
Well, this morning I was out walking my neighbor’s dog when I saw another neighbor, a much younger man , out doing the same thing ! He had his two little sons with him and they were having good fun trying to pick up the litter.
When I commented(評(píng)論)on what a good job he was doing, he said , “ Well , an older fellow in our street does this . And my friend and I thought it wasn’t fair that he had to do it all the time , so now we take turns .”
Not only was he taking a turn , not only did he have a friend join in as well , but he was passing on the lesson to the next generation(代)!
By the time I had returned the dog to my neighbor I looked again and his children’ s friends had joined in !
This man was teaching a whole group of young children to keep their own street sanitary. An older man had set an example for him and now he was passing it on — the next generation is doing what he did and the generation to come after that !

Thinking about taking a year out before going to university?Check out your gap year choices here and decide if it’s the right decision for you…
What is it?
It’s a year out between finishing senior high school and starting university in which you can travel, work and generally do mind-broadening stuff you will never forget.
I don’t want to travel, but I don’t know what I want to do at university.
You will have a good three months between finishing your A Levels and university Clearing (when last-minute vacancies (空缺) on courses for the coming academic year are advertised): surely enough time to decide what to do. You don’t need to take a year for that.
I need to take some money before starting university.
Fair enough. But don’t get comfortable and decide not to get a full-time job. Spending a year on income support (收入補(bǔ)貼) will be depressing; you’ll have nothing to say when future employers ask what you did in your gap year, and you’ll have to put up with smug (得意的) post-gap year students comparing notes when you start university.
I’d love to travel, but I can’t afford it.
Most gap year students work for the first six months and then travel, using the money they’ve earned in the second six months.
I’m scared.
Try not to let fear of the unknown put you off seeing the world. Earth is a big planet, but when you travel it seems much smaller (even the remotest countries have email access).
1.The potential readers of the text are _________.
A. parents B. high school students
C. university students D. teachers
2.Most students get money for their gap year trip_____.
A. from their parents
B. by borrowing from their friends
C. from the government
D. by working themselves
3.The last paragraph can be regarded as a(n) ___________.
A. encouragement B. warning
C. suggestion D. invitation

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年安徽省宣城市三校高二上學(xué)期期中英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
You’ve probably heard of the expression “A leopard can’t change its spots.” This, of course, is true of leopards. But isn’t it true of people? Can people change themselves? Are we humans just creatures of habits? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits?
One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed. They’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said, “The chains of habits are too small to feel until they’re too strong to break.” So breaking the mould of our bad habits takes effort.
Habits are like the roads we take through our life every day. The problem is that not every road takes us where we need to go. Actually, our routes through life often become our ruts (慣例) in life. We end up stuck in them and find it hard to dig ourselves out. That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our second nature. You see, our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said, “First we make our habits, and then our habits make us.”
But we humans don’t like to change. So we come up with excuses, like “I can’t be different; that’s just the way I am.” And the good excuse is “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it: we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we want to become.
1.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that .
A. getting rid of bad habits is very hard
B. people can’t find their bad habits themselves
C. entering bad habits is hard
D. people don’t have the courage to change their bad habits
2.What’s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. What bad habits are.
B. How bad habits are formed.
C. How to change our bad habits.
D. Why we should change our bad habits.
3.The author’s attitude towards changing one’s bad habits is .
A. doubtful B. optimistic
C. negative D. indifferent

Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted (預(yù)測(cè)) in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains (鏈條) and ecosystems.(生態(tài)系統(tǒng))
Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say.
Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen (氧氣), while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth.
“Predicting species’ reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researches of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services.
The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing(長(zhǎng)出葉子) by 4 times.
“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance —for both leafing and flowering —that results from temperature increases,” the study said.
The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.
Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.
Scientists believe the world’s average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃ since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979.
So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond(超出) 2℃ this century —a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.
1.What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1?
A. Plants’ reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystems.
B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists’ expectation.
C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.
D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.
2.We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that __________.
A. plants’ flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing
B. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents
C. scientists should improve the design of the experiments
D. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change
3.Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because __________.
A. they can prove the climate change clearly
B. they are very important in the food chainsA
C. they play a leading role in reducing global warming
D. they are growing and flowering much faster than before
4. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world’s temperature?
A. It has risen nearly 0.2℃ since 1979.
B. Its change will lead to weather extremes.
C. It is 0.8℃ higher in 1979 than that of 1900.
D. It needs to be controlled within 2℃ in this century.

One Sunday, I took my daughter to the seaside. On arriving at the beach, I saw JoJo, a wealthy man in hotel business. We sat down to chat in an open air cafe while I watched my daughter enjoy herself on the swings (秋千) in front of us.
Suddenly, our conversation was interrupted by a stranger, who politely asked permission to speak to me privately. People often want to tell me something about my TV show.
We stood a bit away from my table. He said, “I’m James, the father of a 7-year-old girl who’s very sick. The doctors said that if she was treated in the UK, she would probably survive. But I’m poor, so can you help me, please?”
I stared into the man’s eyes full of tears and asked how I could help. After I went back, JoJo asked me, “What's wrong?” I told him about it and he was very sorry for that family.
All day I thought about James's family. I even thought about making a special TV show to raise money for the sick child.
On Monday morning, JoJo walked into my office. Actually, JoJo was very busy, and I never imagined he would have the time to come and see me.
“Please, call the man and tell him I’ll pay all the expenses for the girl’s treatment,” JoJo said with a cheque in his hand. “I've been married for 35 years; I wasn’t lucky enough to have a child. Sometimes I feel lonely. I want to help this child.” I picked up the phone to call James.
Now James’s daughter is well and JoJo sometimes goes to visit her. I’m so happy that there are so good people on this earth.
1.According to the passage, the writer _____ .

D. met JoJo at the beach by accident
2.James turned to the writer for help probably because he _____.
A. guessed the writer was rich enough to help him
B. wanted the writer to ask JoJo for help
C. thought the writer could help him through TV

B. To remove his loneliness by doing something.
C. To show his warm heart and kindness.
D. To build a relationship with Jame's family.
