One of India's top engineering schools has restricted Internet access in its boarding houses, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them lonely and even suicidal.

Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them. "Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet," said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs. "The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion."

IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional (不正常的) lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.

Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12.30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbai's 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their "shells," Gopalan said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. "Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (搖籃曲) to go to sleep," said Rajiv, an electronics student.

Which of the following is not the possible effect of free Internet access on students?

A. There has been a decline in students’ lessons.

B. Participation in social activities has gone down.

C. Some students feel lonely and even suicidal.

D. Students don’t even know his classmates.

What measure has been taken in IIT- Mumbai?

A. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their dormitories.

B. Students are forbidden to surf the Internet.

C. Internet access is unavailable in deep night.

D. Students must go to bed before 11 p.m.

In the passage the students are told to _____.

A. sleep through their lessons                    B. break away from the Internet

C. go to sleep along with music          D. stop surfing, make friends

We may infer from the last paragraph that _____.

A. the banning order causes some complaints among the students

B. all electronics students hate the banning order

C. more students prefer listening to music to surfing the Internet

D. there is no Internet access on the IIT campus even since.

This is a real life story of the engineers building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. In 1869, a creative engineer named John Roebling was   16  by an idea to build a spectacular bridge   17  New York with the Long Island.   18 , bridge-building experts throughout the world thought that this was impossible and told Roebling to forget the idea.
Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he   19  to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge   20 could be built. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway, a tragic accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which   21  him not being able to talk or walk.

All he could do was move one   27  and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he   28  developed a code of communication with his wife.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his   29  with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands for his determination not to be   30 by circumstances. It stands too as a monument to the love and   31  of his wife who for 13 years long   32  decoded(解碼)the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves a(n)   33  goal. Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles(障礙) seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that   34  that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence(堅持), no matter what the   35 are.

I clearly remember my mom telling me to drink milk every day—one glass in the morning and another at night. I also remember loving it while my sister thought quite the opposite—she would surreptitiously pour her milk into the sink or water the plants with it! I guess I should thank my mom for making us drink a lot of milk, so rich in calcium(鈣), during those important years.
Today, calcium shortage is one of the main concerns of women in their 30s or even early 20s. The great fear is that when we reach our 50s or 60s, osteoprosis(骨質(zhì)疏松癥)will set in. That is why you can see a lot of advertisements for products supposedly containing a lot of calcium.
Because calcium is not that easy to acquire from the food we normally eat, busy women these days should take calcium supplements(補充物). There are a lot of different forms of these---calcium carbonate(碳酸鈣),oyster(牡蠣)shell or bone-meal-based calcium supplements.
You have to be careful when choosing which kind to take. This is because calcium is not easily absorbed by the body. So the fact that you are taking supplements doesn’t mean that the body is actually benefiting from them. Different supplements may have different instructions on dosage(劑量)and manner of intake. You can ask your doctor to help you determine which supplement is the best for your needs.
【小題1】From what the author’s mother did we may infer that___________________.

A.her children had osteoporosis
B.she knew her children would benefit from milk
C.she must have suffered from osteorosis
D.she didn’t like her daughter who didn’t obey her order
【小題2】 Based on the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The author’s sister will suffer from osteoprosis when reaches her 50s or 60s
B.Many businessmen have already been selling products supposedly containing calcium.
C.We can’t get enough calcium only from food we eat every day
D.Women as young as their 20s should be concerned about calcium shortage
【小題3】What does the underlined word “surreptitiously” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A.HonestlyB.FranklyC.SecretlyD.Curiously
【小題4】We may infer from the last paragraph that____________________.
A.what one chooses as a calcium supplement might not work
B.one shouldn’t take in calcium without the permission of a doctor
C.the more calcium supplements one uses, the more calcium one can take in
D.it is dangerous to use calcium supplements without the guidance
