This is a story from the Ming Dynasty period of China's history. There was a miner official called
Wan Hu, whose dream was to "fly to the moon". One day he tied himself to a chair with 47 "rockets"
and disappeared into the sky and was never seen again. Hundreds of years later in 1969, when US
astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped down from Apollo 11 and set his foot on the moon's surface, the
dream of Wan, as well as the rest of humankind was realized. To honor Wan, a crater (環(huán)形山) on
the far side of the moon is named after him.
Mankind has been able to change the world for the better because there are people like Wan who
never stopped pursuing their dreams.
"I have a dream!" American civil rights leader Martin Luther King once said. It was that dream that
helped black Americans to get equal legal rights.
To realize his dream of feeding everyone in China, Yuan Longping worked in fields day and night
and invented hybrid rice that now feeds almost one quarter of the world's population.
Dreams are important because they give us vision (遠(yuǎn)景). We grew great with them. They provide
direction for our life. With dreams we set goals and make plans, so we can change our present situation
for the better. And our dreams appeal to the likeminded. As individuals we are better off with
dreams-and so are our families, communities and society. Life would be dull without a dream.
When we have a burning desire and we decided to go after it we are full of enthusiasm. As American
novelist Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women said: "Far away there in the sunshine are my
highest aspirations". I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and
follow where they lead.

I was a very determined 16yearold. One day I woke up and realized I wasn't famous. I decided to do
something about it. I would get my name published in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Having made this decision, I needed to think of something I could do well. First, I thought I could tie
my arm around my back and become "the person who swam the furthest with only one arm". But as
soon as I got in the water I sank.
I knew I liked cookies, so I stuffed (塞進(jìn)) 16 in my mouth and tried to be "the person who put the
most cookies in his mouth". But when cookie 17 went in, I got sick.
I realized that I wasn't really good at anything. Then it hit me! I ran to the bathroom and filled up the
tub with water. I had decided to be "the person who took the world's longest bath". It was perfect
because all I had to do was sit there.
I entered the tub at 5 o'clock on a Friday evening. The first three hours went great. I drank soda and
ate potato chips. Being in the water so long wrinkled my hands and feet and made me look like I was
80. But I was determined.
At 8:45 my brother shouted through the bathroom door that the record for the longest bath was more
than a month and that there was also a record for most rattlesnakes with a human in a bathtub.
Feeling rejected,_I got out. Maybe I'll never be in the Guinness book of World Records. But that's
OK. I am still special. Besides, I have more important things to do than sit in a bathtub for a month!

In order to be a success in the American business world, you must get along with people. You must
learn to behave yourself in such a way that you earn the affection and respect of others. As we have
already pointed out, Americans mix business and pleasure. Therefore, learning how to chat informally
(非正式地)can be a help with your American business contracts. Americans like to talk about a number
of different topics-sports, politics, cars, popular movies, television shows and personal interests.
Many large American cities have sports teams. If you are working with Americans in the United
States, it would be a good idea to find out about the local sports teams so that you can join in the almost
inevitable discussions about "What our team will do this year." Politics can be a sensitive topic unless
everyone is of the same mind politically. Limit your discussions to asking questions of your friends. Most
Americans are car owners and some are even obsessive(著迷的)about the subject. You can contribute
to the discussion by talking about cars you have owned or by sharing information you have had in
automotive magazines. Americans watch television almost every night and attend movies regularly, so
naturally TV programs and the latest movies become topics for discussions.
If you are unable to watch American television or attend American movies, reading the entertainment
section of such magazines as Time and Newsweek will keep you up to date on what is popular in
America.
1. What's the best title of the passage? (No more than 10 words)
   ________________________________________________________________________
2. Why should people be careful with the topic-politics? (No more than 8 words)

3. If you want to keep you up to date on what is popular in America, what should you do?  (No more
    than 10 words)

4. The underlined word "affection" in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.(No more than 4 words)
5. Suppose you are doing business in America, what would you do to be a success in business world?
