Yesterday, after telling my brother, Rhys, and me to stop playing like wild animals, Mom went to take a bath. We were having a pillow fight when one hit a vase. Mom the loud crash. Wasting no time, she went into the room. I was sure that she was going to shout at us, but instead she just knelt by the and began to cry.

Seeing Mom going back to the bath, I her and put both hands on her shoulders , saying, “ All things can be ,Mom. The only thing that cannot be broken is our . It's the only thing that can never be broken.”

Mom hugged me very tightly and smiled. After dinner that night, Mom glued the petal back onto the rose. Then she softly said. “My rose is truly unique. Its tiny damages remind me of more important:the realization that love forever.”

My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids who swim there are fit and strong teens, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his well-being. Still, the firefighter’s first words, “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River,” made me catch my breath.

When I got to the river, I saw Anton sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine, with a towel wrapped about his shoulders.

I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.

“Yeah,” was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation. I didn’t get it from my son.

The story was this: A couple in their 20s, unfamiliar with the Stillwater, had gotten caught in the current and began screaming for help. Without hesitation Anton and his friend dived into the water, swam out to the drowning(溺水的) woman, and brought her safely to shore.

In an age in which the world “hero” is broadcast with abandon(隨意)and seemingly applied to anyone, I realized the real thing in my son and his friend—the disregarding of personal safety for the sake of another human being. I know that teens are headstrong and self-centered, but this didn’t lower the gravity of the event and the desire to do good.

Along the way home I tried to get some more information from him, but the only words were, “What’s for supper?”

I thought twice about the tragedy(悲劇) that might have been. Questions flew across my mind like a flight of swallows: Would I have risked my life to save a drowning person? Or would I have chosen to dial 911? Would I have told the story over and over to anyone who’d listen?

The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story from his point of view, now that he had some distance from the event. But all he did was to toast a pie, pull himself together, and head for the door to begin the new day.

A. firefighters always turn up in case of emergency

3.Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. My Mother, My Love B. My Son, My Hero

C. A Narrow Escape D. A Silent Boy

4.Anton kept silent about his deed because_______.

A. he was still in fear

B. he was annoyed with mother

C. he regarded it as a normal thing

D. he was afraid of being scolded

On April 8th, 2013, the world felt sorry because of the death of former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, who died at the age of 87. Besides being the country’s longest leader (1979-1990) in the 20th century, she was the first woman to lead Britain. She worked hard and did well in her work, so she was called “Iron Lady”.

Whatever you think of Margaret Thatcher, the thing everyone does agree on is that she was a woman with great decisions. When she took over Britain in 1979, she led a country that was in economic trouble. She faced a lot of problems because of the poor economic position.

In order to make the country become strong again, Ms. Thatcher had to make some hard and special decisions like raising interest rates and even taxes at a time when most British people were living a hard life. In this way she led Britain to run out of economic troubles.

Early in her second term, just as things were looking a little better, she faced another problem — a strike by the British Miners Union. Once again, the Iron Lady stood her ground to stop the longest strike in the country’s history.

In 1982, Argentina said that they had owned the Falkland Islands since the 19th century. Britain, however, considered the islands to be one of their overseas dependent territories (領(lǐng)土). Margaret Thatcher tried to talk about the problem with Argentines. But Argentines didn’t agree with her ideas, so Ms. Thatcher did what any strong leader would do — send in the British Army. It took 74 days, and on 14th June 1982, the Argentine army finally failed and Britain controlled the Falkland Islands again.

When Ms. Thatcher resigned in 1990, she left behind a country that was very strong. Unluckily, during the last few years of her life, something was wrong with her mind. She hardly remembered anything that was happening around her and even what she had done during her wonderful lifetime.

1.Why did Margaret Thatcher decide to raise interest rates?

A. Because English people were very rich and happy.

B. Because she needed money to fight against Argentina.

C. Because Britain needed to run out of economic troubles.

D. Because people stored too much money in the banks.

2.How did Margaret Thatcher make her country control the Falkland Islands again?

A. She paid a lot of money for the islands.

B. She helped people on the islands a lot.

C. She sent many workers to the islands.

D. She sent in the British Army to the islands.

3.What was the matter with Ms. Thatcher after she resigned?

A. She couldn’t say anything at all.

B. She almost couldn’t remember anything.

C. She couldn’t walk at all.

D. She couldn’t hear anything at all.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that Ms. Thatcher was ________.

A. determined B. sensitive

C. humorous D. generous
