Census Bureau (人口普查局) data released Thursday show that 48 of the 50 most populous (人口稠密的) U.S. cities have grown since 2010, compared with only 40 of the top 50 in the first two years after the 2000 Census. Of the top 100, 93 have grown since 2010, compared with just 72 a decade ago.
Many of the biggest, such as New York, Houston, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego and Dallas, are outpacing the nation’s 1.7% growth rate since 2010.
“Urban America is recovering faster than more remote places,” said Robert Lang, a professor of urban affairs.
Only two big cities - Detroit and Cleveland - lost population between 2010 and 2012.
The urban recovery is led by mid-sized cities including Austin and Fort Worth and Charlotte. Austin grew 6.6% in two years, becoming the USA’s 11th-largest city. In 2000, it was No. 17.
Other trends:
• New York City grew 2%, adding about 161,500 people since 2010. By far it is the USA’s most populous city.
• The population of New Orleans continues to grow. In 2005 a terrible natural disaster happened to the city, causing the population to decrease. Now it has a population of three hundred and sixty-nine thousand. The number has grown by 7.4% since 2010.
• Government budget crunches (緊縮) have put state capitals in difficulty. Half are behind the growth rate of their regions.
Perhaps the biggest exception to the capital crunch is Austin. It has grown more than 26% since 2000. Population expert William Frey says Austin enjoys a number of qualities that make it attractive. It’s a high-tech city with a state university. And it’s in Texas, an attractive place for newcomers. “In some ways it’s a model of what other cities would like to become,” he says.
Frey notes that Charlotte, which grew 5.4% since 2010 has grown into a high-tech and financial center whose industries do business not just with those in other U.S. cities but with the rest of the world.
1. The statistics in Paragraph 1 suggest that _____.
A. there were fewer cities in the USA a decade ago
B. remote areas in the USA have more people now
C. the population in the USA has grown since 2010
D. many big cities in the USA face population problems
2. William Frey thinks Austin’s growth _____.
A. is due to its education
B. is the steadiest in the USA
C. attracts well-educated people
D. deserves the attention of other cities
3. According to the text, Charlotte _____.
A. is a political center
B. has grown slowly since 2010
C. is the USA’s 11th-largest city
D. does business at home and abroad

I got into the teaching profession by choice. I was then in 9th grade, when my mathematics teacher asked me to take a class for a few students to whom the subject seemed difficult. And believe me, I enjoyed the teaching. I never knew teaching would be so interesting. I loved my freshmen and was delighted to teach my so-called students who came up with lots of good questions.
After my post graduation, I worked as a software developer with a public sector(部門) in Bangalore for a few years. But I realized that no job could provide me the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching and training. In fact, I feel it was a timely realization for me to choose the teaching profession. I applied to a few colleges, and finally I was chosen as a “Lecturer”, and I had to lecture graduate and post-graduate students in a college.
On the first day, I was nervous thinking that I had to teach the senior classes. But now I can say that taking lectures was one of the best experiences of my life. I was a Computer Science and Information Technology Lecturer, but I tried to help my students with subjects that were not within my domain(范圍). It was a new feeling to me every morning before going to the classes. I used to feel energized and excited thinking that the class would be lit up with bright faces to greet me, “Good morning, Madam”.
To me each day was a new beginning, with new feelings, new experiences and new queries(疑問). I loved to explore their young minds, read their inquisitive faces when a particular topic seemed tough. It was very challenging to motivate them to take part in the classroom, think critically, question and also respect others’ point of view. Though few things never seemed easy, it was very exciting to assure them that they really can. That is the reason, I love to teach.
1.From the first paragraph, we can know .
A. the author’s maths teacher was strict with him
B. the author felt happy to teach the students

2.Why did the author refuse working as a software developer?
A. Because the salary was lower than that being a teacher.
B. Because the working conditions were quite bad.
C. Because he didn’t feel the same satisfaction as being a teacher.
D. Because he wanted to try more chance to challenge his value.
3.Which of the following statements is TURE?
A. The author looked down upon being a teacher at first.
B. The author taught knowledge about various subjects.
C. The author found teaching was easier than any jobs.
D. The author encouraged students to take part in outdoor activities.
4.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Choosing your job according to your interest
B. How to build a good relationship with students
C. An unforgettable teaching experience
D. Why I love to work as a teacher

Cotton farmers in some Indian villages are busily buying Coca Cola and Pepsi, believing that the sugar in the fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks kills pests.
Farmers say scientists advised them to mix pesticides with a sugary juice to control pests, and they found the mixture cheaper and more effective than pure chemicals — although soft drink makers and scientists dismissed the remarks. N. Hamunayya, who has become a famous person in his village in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, said his crop survived an attack of pests which had resisted other pesticides. “We found that all the colas had uniform effect on pests. The pests became dead and fell to the ground,” he said. He said the drinks had all the elements they needed: they were cheaper, sticky, fizzy, and attracted ants, which ate the young of the pests. But Thinupathi Reddy, assistant director of the Regional Agri Research Station, Guntur, says tests had proved such results wrong. “We conducted some field trials on cotton crop at our research station. There was no obvious productivity or destruction of pests,” he says.
Statements from Pepsi and Coca Cola said there was “no scientific basis” for this_practice. But their dealers are enjoying increasing sales. Mantan Wall, who sells soft drinks in 17 villages in the region, said sales rose up, thanks to the farmers. “For the 10 days between August and September I had successful business. Instead of just 30 cases (each containing a dozen one litre bottles) of cola, I started selling almost 200 cases,” he said. “We expected the sales to drop after the news over pesticide residues (殘留) in the cola drinks. Now I have to keep extra supply for the cotton farmers,” he said.
In February, an Indian environment group made a report saying drinks made by Coca Cola and Pepsi contained pesticides and called for tougher safety standards. The US firms strongly rejected the findings of the New Delhi?based Centre for Science and Environment and said their products were safe.
1.Some Indian farmers think the drinks can kill pests because ________.
A.there is some pesticide left in them
B.they are sticky and fizzy
C.they have elements that kill pests
D.they made the pesticide more effective
2.The underlined part “this practice” in Para. 3 probably refers to “________”.
A.testing the mixture
B.selling more drinks in India
C.mixing the drinks with the pesticide
D.attracting ants to eat the young pests
3.The drink makers would not accept the fact that their drinks could kill pests because they ________.
A.thought it went against science
B.believed that the farmers didn't tell the truth
C.might fear that it could bring harm to their business
D.insisted that no poison was left in their products
4.The writer's purpose of writing this passage is to ________.
A.tell an interesting incident
B.warn people that some drinks might be dangerous to health
C.suggest using Coca Cola to kill pests
D.announce a new discovery of Coca Cola
