13.When a baby is seven months old,he or she can already feel,hear,taste,smell and see.As a new mother,you should know that your child is ready to learn about the world from birth.
Touch.One of the most important ways of communicating a mother has with her baby is touch.Babies enjoy gentle touch and rhythmic(有節(jié)奏的) movement.While inside the mother,the baby is used to being rocked by the mother's movements.After birth,the same rocking movements comfort him or her.Crying babies often become quiet by being put close to the mother's body and gently rocked.Even the most common activities-feeding and bathing the baby,or walking with the baby in your arms-improve the baby's sense of touch and movement.
Smell and Taste.Even at birth,babies show that they can recognize different kinds of smells by avoiding unpleasant ones.They quickly learn to recognize familiar smells,especially their mothers'.Although their taste organs(器官) aren't completely developed,they can tell sweet from sour and much prefer the former.
Hearing.A baby listens to your voice,your heartbeat,breathing,and so on.When his or her head is pressed against your chest,those familiar sounds are comforting,and many babies fall asleep in this position.You may notice that high-pitched(高聲的) voices are more pleasant to babies,so men should raise the pitch of their voices when speaking to them.As a baby gains more control over his or her head movements,it becomes clear that he or she can correctly identify(確認(rèn)) the location of a sound source.Loud,sharp noises often upset babies,while soft,rhythmic sounds calm them down.Music boxes,toys that make pleasant sounds and soft music stimulate(激發(fā)) the babies'sense of hearing.

3.Long live language.That's the message Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and city councilor Amarjeet Sohi voiced when they declared Feb.21to be International Mother Language Day (IMLD)in Edmonton,the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta.
The pair were on hand for the International and Heriage Languages Association's (IHLA)12th annual Mother Language Day celebrations in an effort to save endangered languages.
"Keeping languages alive is important for me richness of our culture and the diversity that strengthens Edmonton,"said Iveson.
There are nearly 7,000unique languages spoken worldwide,but according to data from the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) half of those languages are at risk of going extinct in just a few generations.
For example,there are currently over 3,000languages spoken throughout Africa.This sounds impressive until you realize that there were over 10,000languages spoken on the continent before colonization during the 19th century.
"People who lose their language experience suffering,"said Olenka Bilash,professor of second language education at the University of Alberta.Bilash likened the loss of language to the loss of cultural identity.
"As a multicultural society,it is very important to continue to preserve and pass on to future generations the language, culture, traditions and customs that we bring to Canada,"said IHLA president Olga Prokhorova.
While the City of Edmonton's citizen and new arrival centre in city hall provides services in 150languages,Bilash said research shows that"most people are still uncomfortable speaking their own language in public spaces."
Bliash hopes the official announcement of International Mother Language Day in Edmonton--which  echoes International Mother Language Day declared by UNESCO in 1999--will be a step toward encouraging more language diversity in order to preserve the cultures tied to them.
"Our words define us; our expressions and vocabulary define who we are as people,"said Marueen Kubinec,Alberta's minister of culture and tourism."Our words are living examples,perhaps the best that there are,of human creativity."

4.In Europe, men do not usually wear skirts. But the Scottish national costume for men is a kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish lie to be different. They are also proud of their country and its history and they feel that the kilt is part of that history. That's why the men still wear kilts at old-style dances and on national holiday. They believe they are wearing the same clothes that Scottish men always used to wear.
That is what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730,Scottish men wore a long skirt and blanket around their shoulders. These clothes got in the way when the men started to work in factories. So,in 1730 a factory owner changed the blanket into skirt-the kilt. That is how the first kilt was made.
Then,in the late1700s Scottish soldiers in the Br itish Army began to wear kilts. One reason for this was national sentiment. The Scottish soldiers wanted to look different from the English soldiers. The British Army probably had a different reason.A Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find. The Scottish soldiers fought very hard and became famous. The kilt was part that fame, and in the early 1800s men all around Scottish began to wear kilts.
These kilts had colorful stripes going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s,the color o f the stripes had not special meaning.Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families.By about 1850,most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men form the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes.Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the colors they liked best.
This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the Scottish families.Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts!

18.If you are planning to learn a foreign language,here are some tips about learning language you can benefit from.
Try to set aside some time every day for your studies whe your brain is most receptive.It's better to study for 30minutes every day than for 3hours once a week.If you can spare two or three hours a day,break them up into some periods to avoid brain overload.
Go over each lesson several times,perhaps once in the morning,once in the evening and once several days later.Give your brain time to digest the material,but make sure the gaps between periods of studies are not too long or you will forget most of what you're trying to learn.Make sure you have mastered the contents of one lesson before moving on to the next.
Make sure you're comfortable with the basics of the language before learning the more advanced knowledge.It will take you some time to get used to the pronunciation and spelling of a new language,but without a solid understanding of these,you'll find it very difficult to learn more.
Setting reasonable targets is a good way to motivate yourself.You could set yourself a time limit or aim for a certain level of proficiency (精通).
Once you have mastered the basics of the language,learn to apply them about the things that interest you.In this way you are more likely to remember the words,phrases and grammatical constructions you meet.
You will find that at times you're makin fairly rapid progress,while at other times you seem to stand still or even go backwards.This is normal when learning a language,so don't be discouraged.
Making mistakes in a foreign languag is nothing to worry about.What matters is getting your message across,not whether you use all the right words,tenses,cases,etc.If you cannot think of the exact words,try using other ones.
